I completely agree, and it's also worth noting that you're lumbered with a much smaller fuel tank (a pet hate of mine, I want at least 600-700 km between fuel stops) ..............
    ..... (use it right .......

Loads of folk will go 700km between petrol station visits in a PHEV but they'll plug in daily.

With my 330e, I plugged in every night and usually had 800km or more done before I had to go to petrol station.

I know a chap with an outlander who goes months & thousands of kms without visiting petrol stations. Now I mean 2000+ kms not 20k of course

All big, heavy, thirsty, high tax and maintenance machines. Often thought about them myself but know a few people that have had them and without fail have had expensive problems relating to suspension. This relates more to the Landover and range rover and also bmw x5.

I firmly believe land rover family of vehicles to be the most troublesome on the road once they get a few years old. Since you're looking at 09 to 12 vehicles im assuming your budget isn't massive.

To be honest vehicles like that scare the crop out of me as an ownership prospect.

I'd look at Skoda there out of what you've suggested but was there even a Kodiak back then? You'll certainly get a fresher one for same budget than the others.

Coincidentally, I was doing some long overdue cleaning out of some cupboards as you do at Christmas and found the order for my 2013 BMW 330d touring. It was a bare bones m sport with vis pack, privacy glass, "extended black panel display" and sliding armrest. I remember heated seats were like 450 euro and I was too tight to pay for them. It was almost a grand more expensive than the much more optioned 330e touring I have ordered. Normally cars have gotten a lot more expensive in the last few years but with the low vrt and grant on the phev models the opposite is the case here.

And the VRT wasn't even that high on those 330ds when they were new!

Amazing stuff, and you're getting a much nicer design (IMO), more power, more mpg (if you use it right) and they're meant to be a lot sharper than the F30 generation to drive as well.

No doubt about it, the PHEV is where the value in them is.

Decided against changing the car altogether now for the moment. Few other things have come up to use my hard earned on...disappointing on motor forum but its house improvements and extension and also 2 exciting business opportunities I might need cash for.

The car I really want is now well out of budget so I'll sit on what I have for a while.....I like it anyway.
Look forward to how you guys are getting on with anything you move into and discussing the new stuff coming out. Seems like an acceptance of phev and soon to be bev is creeping in here. Makes sense really, now its financially viable there will be a big move to them.

Your old logic of buying decent 4 ish year old cars that have depreciated a lump is very, very sound.

I can see myself going EV in 2 years ish ..... The Enyaq appeals to me to replace the sorento. Folk reckon the enyaq is expensive for what it is but it's Kona money and I'll likely get a 2 year old one in 2023.

Yes I got a peach of a 4 year old car (almost 5) in 2018 and as we hit 2021 it still has only 98000kms on it. They seem to depreciate very little between what I think I can get for it now and what I can get in a year or 2 time. I think private sales are catering for that and 2012 models are still attracting decent asking prices anyway. 2017 530e are slowly coming into the price range I paid now (good ones are early 30s) and the new a6 will be there in a years time (good ones are late 30s).

But for a little while I'll stick with what I have but I think when I see what I like 25k and below I'll make a jump.

One of the first 545e to land here no doubt:

A few quid short of 88k for that particular one

Looks fantastic, if I had the money there would be one on my driveway no doubt about it.

Don't think I've seen those wheels on a 5 series before. Are they specific to the 545e, or are they on various LCI models? They look really well.

Think they are the wheels with the m sport pro pack on the 5 series. They’re on all the models.
Lot of money that car and I would question whether it’s any better than the 540i Wailin has in reality.

phev are a compromise/emissions workaround really so as you suggest the 540i is as fine a motor in reality.

I'd say if you were to buy Wailin's car brand new here from next week, you would be paying more than 88k for it. Because of the new tax rules and importing from the UK being far less attractive, cars like the 540i will become a thing of the past on these shores. A 545e will probably be as close as you will get to one without being totally screwed on taxes.

Like us all I’d love a new 545e but couldn’t afford one. The 540i would be a fantastic option but like said above you won’t be able to bring one in from the UK from Friday and I only know of two here including Wallins one.
It will be interesting to see if the 545e looses value as fast as the 530e? If so one might be within reach in a few years.

What facts do we know now on the importing of cars from January 1st?

Anyone got a breakdown for a specific car what it would cost today to Import versus on Friday?

I'm hoping these phev's don't lose as much as previously which, if it is harder to bring them in cheaply from the UK they shouldn't.
I have heard that the 5k vrt grant is disappearing at some point next year(end of March) which may be a rumour but would help them retain value.
I don't think BMW will sell many new 545e in Ireland to be honest as it's just too expensive for most and with a bit of spec isn't much cheaper than x5 45e which will be what most people seem to prefer these days. people love suv's much more than big saloons.

Unfortunately, since the LCI was introduced, you can't buy a 540i either here or in the UK even if you wanted to. I think you still can if you want a Touring (because the M550i is only available as a saloon right across the globe), but definitely not for the saloon anyway.

The only pure petrol models sold here now (aside from the M5 of course) are the 520i and M550i. You can still get a 530d but that's xDrive only unfortunately.

Is it worth getting a car on finance if not going for a mortgage for another 2 or 3 years ? As it would be payed back by the time applying for one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Odd style of wheel on that 545e. Don't like it at all. I've always felt that bmw let themselves down with their style of alloys on the latest cars (G20/30 onwards) compared to Audi. I'd prefer the m sport one to that.

They’re the m sport pro wheels for the 5 series.
I’ve noticed that lots on new design alloys have black flat areas to aid aerodynamics. Doesn’t look great. I do like the seats that they have in that spec though like M5 seats.
I assume you held onto the 540i Wailin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Yes. I struggled on selling it or not, but came to the conclusion that there's nothing else out there of similar value that I'd prefer. Happy to keep it now for the long term.

I think there is a walk up of closer to 11k between the 520d m sport at 60k and 545e at 76k less 5k grant. the 530e m sport is now 58k after grants so is probably where the money will go from now.
A buyer is at the 545e level is going to add at least 5k plus worth of extras like plus pack, tech pack etc so it is going to still be the bones of a 80k car. pretty rare.I guess there will only be a few sold here every year.
The phev's do seem to be where the value vs. performance in the BMW range is at the moment in Ireland I agree.

I’m collecting a 530e XDrive next week. Reading this thread, I’m getting the jitters that I should have stretched to a 545e.....

You made the right choice imo. Both cars will depreciate heavily but that 545e will drop like a stone. Plus nearly 90k is just crazy money I feel. 530e is a quick car for anyone, nearly 300bhp.

Thanks. I suppose depreciation is a fact of life on these machines.

I’ve had quicker cars before, but that was years back. It’s more antisocial now, I’m greener now, and older. So a bit of comfort in a quick cruiser won’t be a bad outcome.

530e is the sensible choice and as nice and impressive a machine the 45e is, you won't do anything in it that you won't in the 30e without access to a few spare driving licenses.
    Best of luck with it.
