Unless there's a sharp short complete shutdown this will drag on for months.

What about construction workers? I doubt they are all keep distances & often wash hands. If the current situation is getting out of hands i think i’d be better to get the construction stopped too for a few weeks - it really won’t change much? Or am i wrong thinking this way

Construction, your picturing a few man on a building site, the word construction covers hundreds of big and small businesses around the country which some are little to do with actual construction as in building houses,as with the firm i work for, my boss was delighted when he spotted a loop hole when construction could stay open, shops have to close easy to spot walking down main street one that's open, but you go into a business park as my own you will see very little closed.

I thought people had moved on from covid being a "Dublin disease"
The new strain is more prevalent there because of the airport.

Cannot see this happening and, even if they asked it, there wouldn't be enforcement. We can't get the Gardai often for crimes at the best of times - we certainly won't get them policing the entire citizenry to ensure they're in their houses.

    I tend to agree

Lockdown will not be enough without enforcement and border controls. Curfew is needed also with massive fines for breaking of same. I've lost all faith the government will do the necessary I'm afraid.

    Curfews will make no difference.

People go out to (essential) work to interact with colleagues then they come home to forced confinement with the other members of their household.

People walking around outdoors at 9pm on a mid-winter's night has nothing to do with it.

    Close the border.

This is going to be repeated countrywide. A real problem with no easy solution. Look after yourself as best you can.

Workspaces are well spaced, that's a positive, all the usual covid measures in place, temperature check, hand wash stations etc, but that may not be enough given how virulent this has become. Company will go on working unless governmet shuts it down. Which they really should for a few weeks, and break this for once and for all.

Yup. Have to go in Monday, 15 in the office. I wanted to work from home. And could do it. Told no, I am required in office. There is no way of knowing what the others in the office did over Christmas and New Year.

Tell your manager your not going in and you will work from home as you did in March (assuming that you did).

I'm the same. I'm 34 weeks pregnant and going back to work in a Creche for 2 weeks before my maternity leave starts. My child is out of school as they decided there not safe, but sure Creches where we cant wear masks are 100% safe :-(

There's a couple of high ups in my company that are dismissive of the threat or were pre Christmas. Sure it won't be problem, we're taking precautions, as they went for the Christmas lunch booze up somewhere....

    Close the border.

How do you suggest we do this - would really like your thought process of this.

Get the army in. I know, that seems excessive but they could help. Curfew is a good idea.

Genuine question - has anyone a relaible link showing that people with asymptomatic covid infections have a very low rate of transmission? Or has this been proven?

Why dont you read about Typhoid Mary?

We shouldn't have to be worried to go into work. Add in that there's way more posts from others here saying they know multiple people testing positive lately... another poster who said their cousin tested positive because another relative was waiting on test results with symptoms and still showed up for Christmas!!! This is what we're dealing with. To top it off, there's close contacts not being tested. Every workplace is going to be risky.

Put guards on the major routes. Have them ask people where they're going etc.

The traffic alone will put most people off, and that's all we'd be seeking to do - mitigate

We almost certainly hit the 100k cases milestone tomorrow

My attitude would be - if you work at home last March and you can work at home now - you work at home.

If your boss insists you come in - then it doesn't sound like the type of company i'd want to work in, i.e. put job ahead of pandemic. In which case i would tell boss that i am not coming in, and if he insists on it - that you will contact a member of the press and any bad publicity that comes from it the company can deal with it.

It would take a very good HR manager to explain why you need to come in now if you weren't deemed essential last March.

Am I reading this correctly, once backlog is cleared it’s the end of swab numbers published? Or just will no longer be included in press release?

Said this before but, I really cannot understand what people have been doing for the numbers to go this high

I know I was on my own and not in anyone's company but, for the last month, I was in bars/pubs, I was out on my walks and I saw no one acting out of line or inappropriately. Retail shops, were as you'd expect but again, I saw everyone adhering to the regulations.

In the Summer, when things opened up, cases went up but, it was very, very gradually, over a period of almost 4 months was it? I expected a rise in cases, NPHET expected a rise in cases, everyone expected a rise in cases but, no one expected these numbers.

What the hell have people been doing? Seriously, have they been riding each other?

I'm not trolling but how does a curfew help? Pubs etc are shut so people aren't exactly going out on the town at night. Most of the mixing is going on during the day surely?

100,000 total since the beginning. We’ve likely passed it already accounting for the backlog. we’ve most certainly passed it including unconfirmed cases (anyone’s guess)

Stagnated release of numbers is very intimidating apparently over 9000 not been counted that's nearly 10% of total cases since this began, the statistics have often included deaths that occurred months ago we are definitely not seeing accurate information at all.

I'm in vulnerable categories for a few different reasons and am trying my best to adhere to the side of caution it's a very overwhelming situation and this is totally confusing to see stats like this.

People need to work from home. If it's possible do it, if your boss complains, forward the email to HSE rep or local TD

Maybe just talk to your Doc... i would think that she would be able to sign you off on health grounds given your late stage of pregnancy

Read a different way, we’re about 300 days into this pandemic here and we’ve have 10% of cases in the past 2 days. No way to spin that to look good.
