If the government keep dithering I'd say the teachers will correctly take matters into their own hands and strike.

I have a relative who is due to have elective surgery next week in Limerick. She's having knee surgery. Is this likely to be cancelled?

Professor Kim is back and taking sense as usual. I wish all Governments had listened to this man from the start.

    https://youtu.be/MBysYDWy78k

He says the virus numbers are underreported by a factor of 10, i.e. 82 million positive cases is more likely to mean 820 million.

Other than what my friend has told me, in that they can't get vaccine unless they're sure they don't have Covid-19 (large presumption here that it's a test), there's not a lot of literature from Irish side on this, as far as I could google.

    However Mayo clinic states:

"If you’ve had COVID-19, wait until 90 days after your diagnosis to get a COVID-19 vaccine."

    https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-vaccine/art-20484859

I'm not so sure how reliable the Mayo Clinic are, after all they're an internet page named after a cursed county. :P

    It's reliable enough source

Hospital numbers have shot up again

    73 admissions 20 discharges

Most Covid positive patients since wave 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭Fakediamond

Record admissions. Worse than ever before. 60 was the record, set a few days ago.

Weeks and weeks of this to go. They're in huge trouble

We’re all in huge trouble. Not a good time to have a car crash, stroke, heart attack, asthma attack right now because there’s no spare capacity to deal with these everyday health emergencies.

Is it in Croom or UHL ? Better chance of it going ahead in Croom. That said, they may well cancel non essential procedures.

Watched that video a few days ago. Very informative. Can see this pandemic has put great stress on him. That's in a country which has dealt with it quite well compared to EU/US. I can't imagine now fatigued and stressed scientists/healthcare workers are at this time. I'm sure many now are beginning to feel angry with the public.

In other words, the surge in Ireland was caused by 3 weeks of lawless socialising before the whole country mixed households for Christmas dinner. It was the Government relaxing restrictions too much, not the UK variant.

This new variant is quite the scapegoat for Governments on the British Isles. Such a coincidence that it’s responsible for mass transmission just after a surge coinciding with ignored public advice.

    "Lawless socialising"

Get me off this wild ride

We're now one of the top stories on the international version of the Guardian. The second most read article today.
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/02/ireland-covid-cases-surge-as-health-official-warns-virus-is-absolutely-rampant

This is not only going to be a very grim and sad experience, it's also going to be embarrassing.

    That's the better option.

As it stands, schools to re-open on the 11th. That is absolute madness and everyone can see it. So what do teachers and parents do on the 11th? Somebody has to take the lead here because our government won't. If schools open, teachers should go out on strike.

No need. The government are peeing their pants as usual but they will announce the closure of classrooms in the next few days. They are probably deep in discussions with their PR teams on how to announce it.

Becoming clear Zero Covid is the way to go. Especially if this news variant is till less than 10% than cases here. If not we could be dealing with many mutations in circulation and it will could become far more difficult to manage

It’s pretty clear you are clueless if you believe ZC has a chance of being implemented here. Although it is possible no one has ever said why it’s not a runner and you just don’t know.

So the system they use can only report 2000 cases daily and since all this began not one person taught this might be an issue?
And we wonder then why people have no confidence in the authorities to roll out a successful vaccination program.

Few observations and thoughts about latest developments. Covid cases are through the roof but I think its too simplistic to blame hospitality as a whole.
When Tony Holahan blamed socialising I think a lot of people wrongly think pubs and young people drinking on the streets. It covers all elements, including meeting friends for a meal or calling around for a coffee. Its indoor interactions that mainly cause spread and I don't think that messaging was strong enough leading up to Christmas.

Yes people spread covid, but the government have their part to play too and not having a strong track and trace system or IT system for handling case numbers is a failing on their part.

In reality, bar work, we are now in a fairly tight level 5 so once we keep our interactions to a minimum there isn't much more we can do and worrying about things we can't change won't solve anything.
No matter posters views, the people who need to pull their weight aren't on this forum. We all know what needs to be done, whether we agree with it or not. Looking at social media there are many sections of society who don't give a **** about this virus or the consequences of their actions.

Time to upgrade our IT system ..

Are they using an excel sheet? Or windows 98?

A cap on a system reporting results makes zero sense in 2020

There never has been and never will be enforcement. Christmas party time is over now so the amount of parties should be low in the next couple of months which will massively help. Remember the last spike was really driven by post GAA celebrations in combination with back to college parties.

I think the outrage over the failures in the reporting system are OTT.
The reported numbers are only ever an indicator of the level of the virus in circulation. With high numbers reported and positivity rates close to 20%, the true level of positive cases will be multiples of the reported number, maybe 5+ times more.

Yeah, basically what happened this time was every town and village won their club championship and we are now seeing the consequences. These 'super spreader' events then trickle down through the community via other social mixing.

I see UK stepping in to help us, we can't help ourselves that's for sure. Where is EU when you want them??? No where .

Where are the people who are supplying us with the vaccine right now?
