Will you stop. I mean do you ever get tired of fighting with your fingernails. The one thing I have noted is the far more measured posting on this thread now that the vast majority of the loonies shouting about civil liberties and the restriction hoax being pulled on us all have left.

NPHET and Tony have been shown to have been pretty on the money the whole way through this with their very cautious approach. The amazement and horror at the people with the stats, data, experience, and skillsets in this area actually know what they are talking about must be shocking to many here claiming all sorts of disgusting things about them on this thread.

We are now though at a point where all the recriminations and arguments about the past get us nowhere.

Will you please read before you post in future, the poster said at the end of the last lockdown we should have increased restrictions. Nphet did not recommend this, just have a read first before you post, it's constant from you.

The purposes of lockdown isn't to get the number of cases down to zero and for everything to be alright again, it's to stop the disease from getting out of control and overwhelming the health system. That was the point of the first one, the second one and this third one and, who knows, there may have to be a fourth one?

Why do you consistently always present this strawman that lockdowns don't work because they don't eliminate the virus?

That's not what they are for. They are to protect the population and the health system against a surge in the disease

The comments on the Journal are the same. Have people really not figured out the purpose of a lockdown at this late stage? They are either thick or being deliberately dishonest.

What is constant is you claiming people don't understand your context. NPHET did make certain recommendations that were ignored. Either way, it is silly at this stage to even talk about it as another poster noted our Government got railed roaded into listening to the idiots with the loudest mouths.

This whole experience is such an example of poor science communication.
I'm sure many PhD theses will be written about it.

But it come here for quality check before getting shipped all over the world.?

Bit mad that 10 months in some people don't get this. Not sure some people realise how serious this is at the moment with impact on health service. Think it's worst it's been since March if not ever now.

You mean the few hundred thousand people who might have wanted a job over Christmas and businesses who would never have opened again without Christmas. What a shower of idiots for wanting to provide for their families.

The next two weeks are critical.

As original a comment as it is funny, fair play for that contribution.

Wasn’t the purpose of lockdown twofold as we have been told?

One to stop the hospitals getting over run and secondly to buy time for the proper procedures, infrastructure etc to be out in place to deal with the pandemic?

People seem to just keep referencing the first part constantly.

Have to spice it up a bit or no one would listen.

I think it was Paul Reid. Not exactly a specific or fixed definition for what rampant means in terms of virus. Why would you oppose it being used out of curiosity?

Number of referrals for testing maybe?

Our local gp said people they referred were not turning up for their arranged test!

Yes, to keep numbers low enough for testing and tracing to work, which if successful would avoid the need for constant lockdown.
Which we have now failed at. Again.

I made that point the other night, our icu capacity is still one of the worst in Europe.

Those same businesses and people are now as a result facing maybe months of heavy restrictions along with causing damage to other areas.

Yeah I think it's worse than March. We have a lot more knowledge about it but also the general apathy being displayed by people at this stage is showing in the numbers. I think talk of the vaccine has caused people to drop their guard somewhat too. It's very alarming how quickly things are spiraling at the moment.

    This seems fairly worrying because if more UK cases get imported then it could add to very high existing case numbers already;

    https://twitter.com/CillianDeGascun/status/1345139326863224838

In other words, the surge in Ireland was caused by 3 weeks of lawless socialising before the whole country mixed households for Christmas dinner. It was the Government relaxing restrictions too much, not the UK variant.

This new variant is quite the scapegoat for Governments on the British Isles. Such a coincidence that it’s responsible for mass transmission just after a surge coinciding with ignored public advice.

Why are NPHET using the word "rampant" when there is no basis for doing so?

If some testing centers are reporting 50 percent positivity rates, I would absolutely say that is ‘rampant’.

Suppose you have evidence to back up your claim that there is no basis?

    .

Plenty of people did not mix households at all this Christmas to be fair

Believe it or not I actually think all the socialising was partly caused by a belief that a lockdown in January was inevitable. Almost like last orders at a bar.

If you're saying government should have invested in public health departments and contact tracing then I don't think many will disagree. As it is public health doctors are set to strike in less than 2 weeks.

Will the schools reopen for January? I’m a teacher and am really anxious. Overweight and asthma with high blood pressure.

Genuinely how much do people think can be done in 8 month?
It's a cop-out to excuse people's behaviours. Easy to blame the HSE when the virus is running rampant.

Even if we doubled our ICU capacity and magiced up the staff, it would only buy us an extra week in the current scenario where cases are doubling every week.

I'd not pay any attention to the daily numbers for at least two weeks, they are completely unrepresentative of what's happening such is the backlog of testing. Just assume the worst places are still the worst.
