I was up in cratloe woods today, it was a lovely day for it. The place was packed, everyone out in the fresh air. Hard to believe the world is going end in a few weeks according to the reactions on here.

It’s really strange how things have turned so fast. It’s hard to believe it’s entirely down to a minor relaxation of restrictions. It never took off like this in Sept / Oct.

Didn't see crowds in town like I saw in the run upto Christmas back in September.

We also didn't see Christmas family gatherings in September.

How is testing and contact tracing so bad and slow now? Can we not get our sh!te together after 9 months, it seems to have got worse

Thinking at this stage they should announce the cases including the backlog less 10% or something and worry about denotifying later tbh. At this stage it needs to be RTE giving out a number and they don’t seem to report much on the backlog as far as I know except quoting the press conference yesterday where they mentioned 4k

Cases are after a checking process. They are released after the checking process is completed.

This checking process only seems to create more inaccuracies, even with it they denotify previously announced cases near daily. They should just announce the raw swab numbers and denotify as necessary later, it might even lead to less denotifications! You can't identify trends from the announced cases numbers now as they are severally under-reported atm and will likely be over-reported for several days to catch up again. It is a completely flawed system.

Has there been any research done on the prevalence of the Kent variant here?

Are these numbers not from the week leading up to Christmas rather than Christmas itself? The upward trajectory started very quickly in December before many family gatherings were taking place.

Cases very late to be announced today, must be trying to figure out a plan of action.

Gavin Reilly tweeted an hour ago that yesterday there were 5,500 positive swabs.
    A positivity rate of 20%

Why were only 1600 announced then?

Because with those numbers schools would have to close and they don’t want that

It only works with small numbers, once you allow virus to lose control, you too lose control of the ability to trace it.
It's clearly out of control now, and the FAke LEVEL 5 ain't going to get it back in control.

I'd say they directly correlate to people finishing work and going out or home for Christmas

It was cited last week that many people were having 30 close contacts.

1600 cases yesterday times 30 = 48,000 calls that need to be made in one day and 48,000 people that need to go for testing.

Contact tracing works when the public is also co-operating. When the public is taking the piss and doing as they please, the arse falls out of it.

While I wouldn't be too quick to defend the HSE, there does come a point where no trace system in the world will be able to cope, and we are at it now.

Track and trace is an aid to control in a controllable circumstance - we are now out of control. We could never rely on tracking to keep us safe, if people were not doing their utmost to restrict contacts too.

We were promised a christmas and we got it. Be careful what you wish for.
Those who said that we would slip off the leash for while and deal with it in January, may yet regret that attitude.

"To support the testing system through this surge, we are no longer advising close contacts of confirmed cases to get tested. Testing and tracing is an exercise in containment and we are no longer in a containment phase"

      Tony Holohan

That's why in case anyone is wondering but missed his comments

Unorganised like the tracks and trace. it shows poor organisational standards if the can't even release a number at the same time .

      1. They came out a few days ago and said a significant % of people where not answering calls from contract tracer, or are ignoring the advice.

      2. Why is it up to the government, the HSE, and the contract tracing team to "get our sh!te together" - why is it not for the public to listen to what they are being told and reduce contacts - why is it that we have people meeting up with friends before the lockdown happens - as if this is helping the siutation?

Or 5000 times 30 based on yesterday's swab figures. 150,000.

It doesn't matter how good a system we have its not gonna cope.

I'm pretty chilled out and haven't got the virus or given it to anyone else. Just relax and keep doing the right things, no need to panic.

I suppose you don't have a cancelled hospital appointment either? There are numerous ways the virus can affect you, even if you don't catch it or pass it on.

Numbers have been fairly under control while schools were in and fluctuations have been based on other restrictions changing but schools remaining a near constant. If anything, the spike we are seeing now is probably more being increased by schools being off.
