Well, Redbreast 12 year old is a canonical Irish whiskey and is of undoubted quality. I personally would have to say that I think it is at risk of being overrated in comparison with other Irish whiskeys at a lower price point, but an element of that is a matter of taste.

1792 bourbon featured recently in a bourbon tasting I did with the Master of Malt bourbon advent calendar and my recollection is that it's a decent mixture of rye and caramel, not a bad sipping bourbon. The cask strength version was notable for being a Jim Murray pick for whisky of the year.

Can't say much about Bunnahabhain but I've enjoyed the odd sample from there.

I'd be curious how the Smokehead stacks up against the other Islays you mention...

Great - thanks for this - will report back on Bunnahabhain and Smokehead when I sample.

As regards other Irish whiskeys, how does Writers Tears stack up, heard some very good things about it at a good price point, c. €50 I think?

I'm a big fan of Writers' Tears, all varieties.

Everyone should try the four potstill minis set (25-37 generally around 36 euro )with the Barry Crockett at least once .I reckon the Greenspot and Redbreast 12 are on an unspectacular par tasting more like half their 60 euro price to me and absolutely massacred by Teeling Single Malt (47-55 euro) .The 70 euro Powers Johns Lane is better but still surpassed by the Teeling and maybe even the likes of Tyrconnell Single Malt .The 250 euro Barry Crockett is the absolute top of the hill as far as most average tipplers are concerned .Stunning lightness ,angel tears, mandarin paradise .

All worth trying in thirty something euro range

    Sexton
    Tesco Finest Single Malt
    Bush 10 Single Malt
West Cork Single Malt Dha Chasca

It's pretty obvious from your post that you have a very definite preference for single malt over pot still which is fair enough. Equating Redbreast 12 with Tesco Single Malt though? Nope.

On the mandarin paradise front, are there any other (cheaper lesser quality) whiskies which have that kind of Barry Crockett flavour profile?

I think there were one or two JJ Corry releases described as having similarities... but can't remember which.

Yeah JJ Corry The Gael 2 (prob described by me !) ,like Barry Crockett in my opinion half as good for a third of the price, bargain!

Still on offer for €30.50 in Dunnes. If you've Shop & Save vouchers, nab it with them while you still can!

Think I'm going to open the bottle of Yellow Spot I got for Christmas tonight. Find myself a bit overwhelmed by choice now when I go to the press and am planning on doing dry January (with the caveat that I'm not starting until the 3rd :o ) so am going to try finish off a few bottles over the next few days. Have a little bit of Method & Madness, Knappogue 14, Writers Tears Red Head and Laphraoig 10 to try get through though I'll be happy to just get rid of one bottle.

Something to look forward to in February anyway, lots of whiskey to get stuck into.

Happy new year all on here, great thread and so much useful opinions and advice.

Got a bottle of Jameson Cold Brew as a gift and thought I'd have one after dinner. Pretty poor stuff, tastes like Jameson with stale coffee added. Will probably use it up in Irish coffees now just.

Finally time to open up the Ratheadon to celebrate the end of this poxy year and the acceptance of a masters. Still as tasty as the 1.1 from back in the summer.

    Delighted with this drop!

    Happy new year lads!

Happy new year all! Savouring Hibiki, Talisker 10 and American Irish Classic Blend (which is very smooth and light and harmless to be fair) tonight!

    Just saw this now, sorry...

Powers 12 year old special reserve.. If it could be found
    Powers Signature release
    A number of Teelings’ offerings
Some of the current iterations of older Cooley whiskies- Tyrconnell as mentioned, etc

Honestly maybe I’d sooner have a rake of Powers Gold Label, or just something different... even if it’s a bit flawed...

Could just be a preference thing.
In the 4 set miniatures mentioned above, I’d have Powers John’s Lane a clear last. I take a guess that it’s to your taste.

The Tesco is likely good value, as it’s obviously produced by one of the few established distilleries with stock to spare.
Personally I’m a fan of Bushmills. I like the 10.

I probably wouldn’t dislike the Sexton in itself. But I’m also aware it’s dressed up 4year old Bush. It’s basically the primary constituent of black bush.

    It's made by West Cork.

They do a 12 year old highland malt that used to be Dalmore 12 for half the price. It's made by Deanstown now. Supposed to be good.

It’s absolutely preference / history with the whisky as well. You can just get tired of something.

The Powers 12 year old special reserve I am thinking of is discontinued ... I do think John’s Lane
Is even better but it’s pricier than Redbreast 12.

It may be bottled by West Cork. But if it’s a 12 year old, then it’s not distilled by them.

I’m not surprised given the others you named.
For me I put Greenspot, Redbreast and many other pot stills mikes ahead of PJL.

John’s lane seems to be one of the more polarising whiskeys on the thread.

Obviously. I should have said produced/finished. Their aged stock previously came from Cooley.

got a Three Drams tasting pack for Xmas, but I think the online session was before Xmas so will have to watch it back whilst I'm sampling!

Plan to do it over the weekend, hopefully.
