We need to weather the next 10 days and hope , numbers to get grimmer....

Dare we say though, ....never thought I would say it but the positivity rate may be stabilising around 16%?

Just to update re after effects of vaccine ...
Am a little bit headachey and arm a bit sore but not unexpected and so far less so than the flu jab .

Back in work for next few days so want to take this time to wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year .

State should consider ordering the Chinese vaccines.

Testing and tracing has completely collapsed.
I have first hand evidence of this. They had local health professionals call up to clear their backlog after 8 days(including Christmas day).
That would have included another 2 day wait before actually being tested.
So it's worse than when it failed in April.

A joke of a country, Paul Reid is as about as honest as a used car salesman.

    Same as every country so.

Doesn't matter at this stage, it's rampant regardless.

Vaccine is the only way out of it.

People need to start showing some empathy for people working in healthcare and hospitals. Because of so many selfish acts now they are probably going to have to deal with what is likely to be the toughest few months of their lives

Surely this exact attitude will only make things worse?

If it is a shameful thing to have COVID, people will hide it and not get tested.

Your attitude will not help anyone

NPHET - Close contacts will not be tested due to strain on the system.

Close contacts to isolate for 14 days.

Close contacts are not getting tests now due to the high volume of testing leaving them overwhelmed.

Just shows how fast this thing can move. Impressive if you like to study viruses.

And i do. Is the estimate of R0 still 1.8?

NPHET saying they won't be testing close contacts of cases for next while

Yea bizarre, seems the positive swabs and case numbers announced have totally gone out of sync in recent days

Why is there such a big difference between the swab results & the released figures?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭NH2013

Backlog must be massive at this stage, ~3,000 from today, ~2,000 yesterday and the historic backlog of ~1,400, are we looking at over 10,000 cases tomorrow if they get the swabs processed?

Also if a swab is positive but a case not announced, has the person that tested positive also not been informed that they're positive? Which could lead to even further spread?

Not it wont, people acting more responsibly will help. I never said it was shameful, strange comment You have basically twisted my words for some bizarre rant

    The system can't cope.

    The backlog is insane now.

    What is it now?

    No idea tbh

There can't be that amount of retest imo

Possibility here that they're doing a savage amount of retesting. But I can't think why they would.

More likely, GP surgeries are not reporting cases during the Xmas period. Tomorrow's number might be insane, or indeed it might be Tuesday before that backlog comes through.

    The backlog is insane now.

I don't think looking at case numbers is key anymore, like the first wave, hospitalisation figures are the only way to see. Cases reported will be from tests days ago, close to a week at this stage.

Agreed. The roll out of the vaccine needs to be stepped up to unprecedented levels. We're dealing with an unprecedented crisis and the response needs to be stepped up accordingly. Not getting the feeling it's going to be rolled out quick enough to save the further thousands that are likely to succumb in the coming months.

'because of so many selfish acts'

Their were cases of being with contacts of over 30. Its a fair comment

There couldn’t really be doing that level of retesting while simultaneously saying they are overwhelmed and pulling testing for contacts

I tend to agree with this to an extent

Nearly 70% of cases yesterday were under 44s

But it will surely move to older people with time

Will NPHET and the HSE start updating us now ever day to tell us how many vaccinations they’ve done, even every week?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

System is flooded, basically they are now relaying on good behavior in lockdown and quick recognition of symptoms.

4363 positive swabs, 16.63% positivity on 26,238 swabs.

Yikes, and there's a backlog on top of that too
    Highest daily testing figure?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,654 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Oh boy

    4,363

where is this figure coming from?

    RTE saying 1620
