No. This situation is far from unique. We’ve seen plenty of people receiving astonishing levels of abuse for fair comments against a team or player too.

The issue is entirely down to reach, motivation, and immediacy. The instance I previously talked about on here was Lineker taking issue with what was to me an entirely fair article by Miguel Delaney - but the merits of the article end up being irrelevant because Lineker-fans launched into Miguel (likely without even reading the article in full).

(after all, do you think the people who posted that they hope Karen Carney is raped to death are really thinking about the flawed merits of her argument? No. The behaviour is “You attacked us, we’ll attack you.”)

You can’t possibly believe the reaction is justified by the act in these cases?

Thats a bit of a leap.

    ?

You said "You mean pundits will have to actually research what they say on TV?", which seems to imply that you think if they get something wrong or say something stupid they deserve this level of abuse - so I asked ya the question. After all the discussion has at no point been about her being wrong - we all know she was wrong - the discussion is around the scale of the 'punishment' on social media for angering a fanbase.

IMO the most important and interesting matter at the centre of all this is whether social media being wielded like a weapon is ok - even if someone was wrong, does the punishment fit the crime?

I'd definitely prefer to have played fixtures than have some in hand at this point. At Christmas everyone has a busy schedule so while it's a gruelling spell nobody really has an advantage as everyone is knackered(perhaps bigger squads do somewhat)

But if you've played 2/3 games less you're facing into an already crammed 2nd half of season schedule so could conceivably have to play 3 games a week a few times and the advantage will be very much with sides who'll be slightly fresher during those periods.

Maybe, but if they’d played the game and there were a bunch of positive cases, they’d be getting annihilated from all sides also surely?

For City it was not the worst time to be playing Everton as Allan, Digne, Richarlyson & James Rodriguez are all out. Plus City have a more stacked schedule so whenever it will be replayed it probably won't suit them.

You feel like its only a matter of time before one of them long balls in over the defence is going to catch Newcastle out.

Liverpool have been poor, young Jones needs hooking, Bruce playing JoseBall, bus parked and Liverpool toothless. Poor game to watch.

They just said on Prime that the PL have issued a statement that they've no plans to have a temporary postponment to the league.

Awful game. Imagine the neutrals will give the second half a miss.

You'd nearly watch an Ireland game over this

Newcastle are playing on the counter and unlucky not to be leading, hardly parking the bus

I think you just stated they are parking the bus. It’s literally a long ball to Wilson and hoping to win it. 5-4-1 would indicate bus well and truly parked from the off. Not a good watch.

Out of interest, what is your idea of "parking the bus" in football parlance?

Parking the bus is when you put 11 behind the ball and hope to steal on a set piece. Newcastle are keeping wilson up the pitch and looking to break. Do you expect them to play 433 and all out attack

Set pieces are part of "parking the bus" but it's also pumping the ball up to the lone attacker in the hope of something. Even the likes of San Marino, Andorra etc play with a lone attacker standing on the halfway line while all other players defend their box... most certainly the elite of bus-parkers.

So if man utd win their game in hand are they joint top or second?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,191 ✭✭✭✭Shanotheslayer

Klopp and Lampard should exchange notes. Lampard can tell Klopp how to beat the bottom half teams and Klopp can tell him how to beat the top half.

Surprised at that result. Salah looked like he could of had 3 from the glimpses I saw.

Good defending and a little luck but Newcastle deserved their point.

Thank you Steve excellent New Years present for us neutrals.

Say what you want about missing defenders but Virjil wont fix that lethargic attack.

That is what seperates the Premiership from many leagues - expect the unexpcted .

It's Virgil's aerial ability we miss more than anything. Our corners were a big weapon last season, without him they don't carry near the threat.
