How can it be safe for Creches to reopen but schools remain closed?

It’s gas!! My Wife will have to go into a crèche and work next week whilst other teachers get an extra week off! How in the name of god is that feasible? I’m an essential worker and will be up to my tits again!!

This is a perfect example of the kind of attitude that has us where we are.

"have to give people something to do"?

Shopping for pleasure during normal times is merely pathetic. Shopping for pleasure during a pandemic is grossly irresponsible.

It's all coming out now, so you think people that enjoy shopping are pathetic. Each to their own no, I mean sitting at home playing your PlayStation all night online or watching wrestlemania would be viewed as pathetic to some as well but what harm is it doing.

Growing 12% per day. Doubling time ~ 5.8 days

    Really not good.

And it's even worse based on swabs.

    No, just non-essential retail.

RTE seem to have the first team back on the news, they had the reserves on since Christmas Day.

Haven’t heard Seán O’Rourke yet. Now that he has done his purgatory over golfgate. But normal service for Rte pensioners will be restored shortly - i.e. getting paid, AND a pension. Happy days!

This afternoon Dundrum shopping centre was jammed. Loads of youngsters sitting around eating fast food takeaways.

But that sort of environment is much much safer than a school. Much.
Technically if you're a stupid fool who'd go and do something like that at this particular juncture, nowhere is really safe.

Their parents lack of control over the children, going around spreading covid, shouldn't be the problem of education staff. Your personal responsibility in this extends to whatever little nightmare of a human you decide to unleash on the world as well and irresponsible and uncaring parents are going to have difficult days ahead because of their idleness and negligence of their progeny to this point.

Any decent people I know with teenagers is finding ways of keeping them occupied and onboard, and the kids in question aren't dense luddites so will do what they need to in order to protect their families. The ones who haven't taken the interest in their kids to date will have a much more difficult time doing that.

    This virus is literally classicide.

I suppose travel in and out of the country is fine, but everything else in our lives is not. Honestly. But I reckon EU have banned banning travel, and they are dragging their feckin heels WRT Astra Zenica too.

Can't help but admire UK, for all their muck ups with Covid and Brexit they are streets ahead.

Which wouldn't be necessary if schools are as safe as they claim.

    Nowhere is safe.

Doesn't mean you close everything forever.

It's about safely managing the numbers.

How can people still not grasp this basic concept after 9 months???

Experts have been known to be wrong too as I’m sure you’re aware. The government has a tough job they won’t please everyone all of the time and they shouldn’t even try.

That public address basically means the review on numbers that was meant to happen on January 12th is now pushed back to January 31st and then another public address to tell us that we'll have another 2 to 3 weeks of level 5 restrictions.

How can it be safe for Creches to reopen but schools remain closed?

They want to reduce the contacts within families so kids go back and mix with less risk of taking the virus in to the schools. Creches are less prone to children mixing either in the school or en route. It's not the risk in the school but the risk of undermining the measures in schools.

Well lots of people will probably go anyway, it's not like it will be enforced. But lots of people will also pay heed to the new 5km guidelines, so that's why it's worth announcing these restrictions.
I'm pretty sick of listening to people moaning about not being able to go to the bloody mountain and forests ffs. Tough!

I think it's impolite to talk about previous decisions they made. Not fair or cool man........Leo got asked point blank by CB about the choice to open hospitality vs having a normal Christmas. Tried desperately to muddle it. She referenced the letter where is specifically stated we can do one or the other but not both as the affect on the R number will compound. Hey presto.....Exponential growth in every metric.

We went for the cake and eat it approach ......because we wanted both. Happy new year. Hopefully we'll learn in time for the fourth wave.

Schools are safe, but they're delaying opening them for a week. Why delay if they're safe?

MM said that it allows a full sufficient time for the level 5 measures to kick in, thereby having reduced the spread before schools open, making it safer to open the schools. It makes sense to me. I'm looking forward to seeing my kids go back to school.

The onus is now on parents to limit their children's interactions ahead of the reopening - teenagers in particular.

Would you not stick within 5k? You could still exercise surely. Anyway, each to their own. Stay safe.

Saw that 41 year old Congressman in the US died today with no underlying conditions and it scared the bejaysus out of me. Personally, I'll be sticking to it.

They have also slashed the PPE budget for schools in term 2 which will effect saniisers etc needed for hand washing etc.
