Track and trace not being able to keep up is a major black mark against the HSE and government. We had this problem before and they had loads of time to fix it but clearly nothing has been done.

Possible but you can't be certain on that.

They themselves have no Idea what the next month will bring. Things have changed a lot in Europe and here, Britain in the last few weeks.

Ok, unless things are completely screwed, schools will open. The alternative will be disastrous for too many families.

The schools aren't going to stay closed until March. The government are not going to put people out of work again for another 2 months.

Even INTO asked for only until the 11th Jan.

Where have I said any of that?

They said all along that schools won't be closing yet here we are, closed until the 11th. Then you come along and say there is 0% chance if that happening as if that's fact when it clearly isn't.

Bit naive to be so certain.

Is it just me or do you remember literally yesterday everyone saying "Not a chance they'll close them longer" 24 hours later.........Nobody will considering something that was also inconceivable. Round and round we go.

My 16 yr old daughter said less than half her class are wearing masks since october..they just refuse

I’m all for schools closing if it stops the spread but I don’t think it will there are at least three or four from different households hanging out every day together that’s all day you see them out and that’s only from my estate. If they continue it might stop the spread in school but it won’t in households

The government are rolling out a new level system in January called the Holohan system.

    Level 1: Worrying trend
    Level 2: Concerned
    Level 3: Worried for sure
    Level 4: Increasingly Concerned
    Level 5: Deeply Concerned

Levels 2-5 mandate that people stay at home and do nothing.

They are now adding a new level to this Holohan system...

Level 5+: You people disgust me.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Can you stop making blanket statements like they are fact. It isn't helpful. If you can see the future please PM me tonight's lotto numbers.

Anyone see anything on adult disability services yet they closed in March with little to no notice

It all depends on whether case numbers start falling again. If they are still increasing by the 11th Jan, they will have to keep schools closed. I'd be optimistic that we will see case numbers stabilise by mid next week, and then be falling by the end of the week. But we really don't know, particularly with the new variant.

It is an extra couple of days. This is almost a nonstory. Can we get a grip on reality and calm the outrage.

It’s an extra couple of days, IF they reopen on 11th. And imho there are 2 chances of that.

And in the meantime the teenagers will be out in parks and anywhere else they can congregate.

So what will the first 'c' word spoken at the briefing later?

    1) "critical"

    2) "crucial"

    3) "cases"

    4) "control"

    5) "crisis"

    6) "catastrophe"

    7) "covid"

    8) "chaos"

    9) "can't/cannot"

    10) none of the above

You also said they'll definitely open on 11th. I really wouldn't be sure unless there is a dramatic reduction in cases, which is highly unlikely by then. My money is on at least another week or 2 after that now that they've planted the seed that schools can close.

We could just stick to discussing what we know and that is that we have pushed the opening date back a few days. This is an always evolving situation that I am sure will be evaluated again when needed. We have a vaccine rollout happening and strict measures coming to try and control the numbers which could mean things look much better in a couple of weeks. We just have to wait and see how things progress.

So, is that an absolute fact that they won't stay closed until March? I agree with you that they probably won't but you can't know that for certain either.

except things are escalating rapidly. nothing is off the table now.

Yup, a lot have still not realised this yet or simply can't. They should realise by now that depending on how things change that other things can change rapidly.

The only things that are absolutely guaranteed to stay open going forward are essential retail AKA places where you can buy food. That's it. And depending on whether things get worse or not even the 5km limit isn't certain.

People have been saying for months with certainty that X won't happen or Y won't happen - only for it then to happen.

I would suggest both. I don’t agree with using schools as a babysitting service but pragmatic enough to know for many it is. Also it can the one environment where certain children feel safe and nurtured.

Well I hope that everyone who advocated ignoring restrictions, and meeting people without a concern for how this would affect others are happy with themselves.
