Anyway, it seems that the media and government are blaming the recent increase in UK on the Kent variant, rather than pre-Christmas relaxing of restrictions.
I don't think the evidence is conclusive enough for that yet.

I think some people are so down the rabbit holes of believing in off the wall conspiracies that they will use anything to try and justify their beliefs. Same in US with that Qanon stuff.

No those are the Northern Ireland figures only

I'm hearing from people in Dublin that they are finding it increasingly difficult to get a test, waiting a couple of days or more.

The fact that they've reduced the requirement for close contacts to be tested only once instead of twice seems to indicate that the system is under serious pressure.

It’s clear that HSE and government completely failed in building any systems for test and trace..

People laugh about the U.K. response and numbers - they at least managed to implement testing capacity of up to 700k per day... their tracing system is as bad as ours though

Did I miss something in this exchange ? That’s the number for Northern Ireland and not the Republic of Ireland. There is a a border between the two parts of the island.

It's hard to reconcile how they have mismanaged so badly over so many months.

That SF funeral was a real screw up. The politicians are suppose to lead by example. I wonder how many just said "**** it" after that.

Presume no HSE briefings this week?

It's worth keeping in mind though that the positivity rate will surely increase if close contacts now only need to be tested once. Or am I missing something?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but we managed 22,000+ tests on two consecutive days just before Christmas. So why would we be struggling now?

Or are you saying that we're about to start maxing out capacity from tomorrow?

Theres a cluster outside Letterkenny, first case was detected in a child last Tuesday, close contacts weren't contacted till Saturday, some got positives yesterday so now their contacts have to test, that's seven days of f##k knows how many contacts,

With airports and ferry ports closed for passengers how are all the UK visitors going to get back?

Just add that toll to the souths numbers this evening. Why on earth would anyone think we are separate. Its one tiny country. The numbers are huge.

Well the political system up there doesn’t in any way help the fight against Covid. I mean they barely agreed to an extension of restrictions because the DUP and Sinn Fein couldn’t agree. I understand there are huge differences there but surely to Christ a public health emergency would focus the mind on it rather than the other stuff which at the moment is not that important.

Perhaps they should stay. They came over knowing the situation. They are Irish with families here.

To follow up on this from earlier, its just one view point, there are others of course which are the complete opposite but he's been fairly spot on throughout & backing up the viewpoint, still alot of road to travel on this before going either way

They’ve just shown they’re not fit to govern themselves, any of them. Disgraceful lack of leadership even in the face of deaths, they can’t agree to get on with things for a greater good. Shame on them.

As for ourselves, wondering and worrying about the trajectory we’re going to see. Heard today some of our close neighbours are infected. You just never know.

Ferries are carrying car and foot passengers as long as you can evidence permanent residency in Ireland. Need to get an approved from the DFA but sailings are going ahead as normal (as they should due to freight volumes)

What about going from Ireland to the UK ?

No restrictions. UK continues to recognise the CTA

For a Pandemic, politics needs to be put to the side. Yes SF screwed up but instead of parking that, moving on and doing what needs to be done, the cretinous DUP and their ilk would not align with an all island approach.

Look at the likes of Lord Kilclooney on twitter. Encouraging people to to travel to and from the UK via the Republic. Trying to drag us down with them.

At this point, I'm in favour of putting a temporary border in place with the North to get a handle on the pandemic. As difficult as that may be and within the overall context of Brexit.

Ah tis easy enough Kermit. They can't agree on the day of the week up there never mind policy never mind managing a public health emergency.

I always thought that was going to happen. If you don't test we don't have a problem. Coupled with the "do your own contact tracing" Tried and tested strategies to keep numbers from getting too high. Hearing from people that testing delays occurring in Dublin at least.

Unfortunately the story below will be replicated many times here over the next week.

And there are no more repatriation flights planned. So anyone returning has to get the ferry

That said, if you are driving or else happy to get the ferry, there remain no impediments to moving between Ireland and the UK and back again (as long as you have proof of irish residency). But the volumes doing that would be minuscule. People moving house maybe. Certainly no tourists
