I’m old enough to remember the song from its initial release. The offending word was one I remember from my childhood to describe a lazy waster. I assumed that was its meaning here. The alternative meaning doesn’t make sense, this is a straight couple arguing. It makes sense that she would say the word to imply he’s useless rather than gay. It’s only the last few years people have gotten offended on behalf of the gay community. Anyway the song should stay as it was recorded or don’t play it imho.

Where are you going with your "context". Outrage and cancel culture rule the day no matter what the argument and is seen as progressive...argue against it and you're just a stupid caveman.

We CANNOT start banning words someone somewhere finds "offensive"... It's typical of all of this rubbish, take something from the people that they love and absolutely ignore the context.

Calling a gay man a fàggot on the street = homophobic.
A word in a song = not offensive.

    Stop censoring art you gobshìtes.

I used to like living in a free democracy..where we all had the ability to say some very stupid, inappropriate and offensive things... and if somebody who heard that, was offended, they could ‘choose’ to ignore it or give you it back x 1000...

Shooting somebody, assaulting somebody are two terrible things... the use of a potentially offensive swear word in a song isn’t... its artistic context shouldn’t be ignored.

If people are now demanding that anything offensive is removed from life, from music for example, will that be extended to the cinema industry ?

In Die Hard when John McClane says...

“Hans, this asshole is not my friend, I just met him tonight, I don't know him”

“Asshole? I'm not the one who just got butt-****ed on national TV. Now, you listen to me, jerk-off ...”

Do we have people trawling through cinema reels to scope for potentially offensive material ? Does it all get dubbed ?

Yes I remember an old carry on film where Sid James kept calling a snooty old lady a fag*ot.

Wtf is Ireland’s obsession with both this song and Shane McGowan?

I might add as well that very few mention that the song was co-written by his bandmate Jem Finer, who in fact came up with the initial idea.

The other lyrics of Cardi B, WAP are much worse than that.
I never heard of the song before today:eek:, the lyrics are here:

I'm far from a prude or sensitive, but FFS. How is that acceptable for a target audience of young girls??

Remember the Mayweather-McGregor fight? They did some events in front of huge crowds to hype it, I saw one and the two of them basically called each other fúcking faggóts the whole way through.

Was there any blowback from that for them? I don't remember hearing any complaints.

They don't care about the demographic that would complain about it, if anything they would welcome it as the publicity would help promote the fight.

Context alters this somewhat. Lead singer of Greenday is bisexual (numerous track lyrics about that); and the line is sung from the point of view of a gun-toting pro-Iraq invasion character. Track is off a concept album - concept albums are not just for prog rock and can actually have charting singles.

Context is quite important for Fairytale too. If you're covering the song now, use the later and still official lyrics; but the original stands as the original and there's no point censoring it.

Context in general is important but not used as much nowadays as it should
be. And so is intent of what was said. Everything is seen through 21st century eyes when it’s an unfair way to view events. That’s not to say that obviously horrible words and actions from years past aren’t still as bad now and then, but it’s the sweeping generalisations of eras that I dislike. It seems that people years after the fact believe they can infer intent when that’s dangerous and unfair.

Anyway I’m afraid of rambling on and also going off topic which isn’t relevant to the topic of 2fm.
