Went with one of the Aberlour's from O'Briens myself as well. I see it as saving €25 as opposed to spending another €75 on whiskey.

Also took delivery today of a Bruichladdich Port Charlotte and a GlenDronach 15 Year Old Revival. it's been a good day for the whiskey collection.

One Highland, one Islay, one speyside. That'll do nicely.

    Irish Holy Quadrilogy of Whiskey

    1 Powers
    2 Bush
    3 Jameson
    4 Paddy

Paddy has the highest grain ( as opposed to malt or pot still )content of the four I reckon .It’s thus more fresh , light and spearminty rather than pepper spicy with a bite

You’re either a malt or a grain fan .It’s not a coincidence most of the best whiskies are Single MALTS

    This landed today:

I won it during the That's Dram Good Tasting.

The lockdown announcement was tempered somewhat by it landing. Anyone ever had it?

Did a Secret Santa sample swap on Twitter last night. I sent MVR 2017 and cask strength redbreast. Got 8 year old single cask Glenfarclas and Bunnahabhain Moine in return. Two distilleries I've enjoyed in the past so looking forward to trying them.

Genuinely my least favourite ubiquitous Irish whisky. But as I've learned, there is a fanbase for everything.

I've a sample pack of "local legends" whiskeys to collect this morning. JJ Corry and the 2 new ones from Thomond Gate. Looking forward to trying them over the next few days.

Haven't had it or any Canadian whiskey for that matter. Let us know how it goes down. A nice little bonus present for you.

Nice! If you sleep now and in the afternoon you could drink it tonight.

Interested to hear what you think of the Thomond Gate.

I've already invested in full bottles, so I know I'm after putting the cart before the horse on this. At least I'll know soon enough if they were worth the hype!

The whiskey you serve to the freeloading brother in law... son in law... partners cousin who turns up uninvited... especially the sort who turn up with empty miniatures thinking they will go home with some of your good stuff.

    * I may have strayed into AH territory there!

Yeah Paddy is at least drinkable. Some of those bottom shelf supermarket scotches are horrendous.

I haven't tried it myself, that's why I was curious as to how it would compare,
it is Powers pre-mixed with bitters and sugar syrup.
"To serve, pour 50ml over ice and simply add a fresh twist of orange peel."

This was worth the punt. It's got a pretty decent kick but is very drinkable. Sipping away happily on my 2nd one today. Feels very christmassy

Kudos on getting started early. Having checked my (empty) schedule I shall also get started. Whiskey sour to get the vitamins in. Cheers!

It's the Irish whiskey that people love to hate.
I'm convinced that many of the most vocal haters haven't tasted it in years (or perhaps ever) and are merely parroting what they've heard people say about it over decades. Traditionally, it was always the cheapest of the Irish whiskies, so I think I got a poor rep from that to the point that it's commonly held to be gut rot.

What do I think about it?
It's grand. Not particularly complex or refined but for an entry level whiskey it's completely fine.

I last had a bottle of it sitting there around April time. It got helped out by some of TK's finest.

It's certainly the worst of the "big" 4 but it's not undrinkable per se.

But there's seldom a reason to have it on the shelf though given how cheap Powers, Jameson and Bushmills can be gotten.

Well for some. I have to go meet a man about a dog now, but there's a lovely glass of Bowmore and some Boulevardiers awaiting my return.

I think Paddy has a similar reputation to CDG. There's nothing particularly wrong with either but these days better products can be got for the same price.

Little to no demand for either these days in my experience either. I've over 20 years experience in the trade now and I've never had to order a bottle of CDG and maybe a handful of bottles of Paddy.

Unlike vodka (and to an extent gin) there is a brand call for whiskey so people will ask for Jameson so other whiskeys rely a lot more on up-selling and prior brand knowledge.

I used to order Cork Dry for the rural pub I worked in just to have a bog standard gin that was at least made in Ireland. I slightly preferred it to Gordon's anyway.

Paddy was used in hot whiskey and Irish Coffees. Very rarely would anyone have ordered one on its own. Can't say I've tasted it in probably 10 years.

Certainly, up until fairly recently, cdg was still the best selling gin in the country, though.

I don't think I've ever tried Paddy. I have a 50ml sample of it from 1960 and a modern version of it. It'll be interesting to see if there is much of a difference or if they are both rubbish!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,182 ✭✭✭killbillvol2

More than 20 years ago three of us did a comparison of Paddy, Jameson and Power's for want of something better to do. Tried them neat and with water. Two of us preferred Power's and one Jameson. 'Rough' was the unanimous opinion on Paddy. To this day if we're just ordering an ordinary whiskey we generally stick to that choice. I buy the odd bottle of Power's and get loads of Jameson as gifts but would never buy Paddy. If you gave me a hot whiskey made with it though there would be no complaints!

    That would be interesting.
Paddy is grand. Tastes like whiskey.
I'd say the 60s one could be awful shlte or wonderful, you just couldn't guess.

You need to taste these and report back!

Had a small splash of the Imperial stout barrel finish. I'm impressed! It smells fabulous. Fairly pale colour. The heat of the alcohol doesn't hit quite as hot as Blue Spot, despite being around the same ABV. Really looking forward to sampling the brandy barrel finish later tonight.

Paddy is sweeter on first sip than Jameson but more burn on the finish... I guess thats the high grain content. Bit rough around the edges alright but not rotgut by any means.

For research purposes I've ordered some Paddy. Bit rough around the edges but once you get into it it's grand. Wouldn't buy a bottle but I wouldn't turn down a free glass of it. First pints of Guinness since March. Going down well.
