Picked a Writers Tears Copper Pot in Dunnes today. There was a couple of quid off and it game in a gift pack with two of the pictured glasses. Nice drop.

Been on a big cocktail buzz recently. Last night had an old fashioned with powers. Delicious. Thought I'd upgrade it tonight with Talisker 10 but it's only made me want a talisker 10 neat.

Curious - have you tried the premixed Powers Old Fashioned and if so how did it compare?

I haven't tried it myself, that's why I was curious as to how it would compare,
it is Powers pre-mixed with bitters and sugar syrup.

Hmmm. Might be worth a punt for the xmas season.

Had a taste of that before. I thought it was nice enough. I'm not a massive old fashioned fan so wouldn't buy a large bottle of it though.

Has anyone seen Powers John’s Lane discounted anywhere in the run-up to Christmas? It seems to be around €65 everywhere.

Bought myself a little Christmas present of Johnnie Walker samples. Some heavy duty ones in it. The full bottle of John Walker is two thousand pound alone.

    Johnnie Walker 18 Year Old
    Johnnie Walker Blue Label
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal
Johnnie Walker Blue Label King George V
    The John Walker
Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen

Got a sneaky sample of GlenDronach 18 year old Allardice too.

Which is the 2k one !?

No. I had the angostura and sugar syrup separate. Made with Powers last night. Talisker tonight. Same recipe but enjoyed Powers more (as an old fashioned)

I've never tasted anything beyond Johnnie Walker Red. Are the other offerings worth a punt?

    (not the £2k one!) :pac:

A lot of whiskey sour recipes call for drops or a spray of bitters as garnish on top of the egg white. I just get them off Amazon.

I’m aware. As I said “you can add them”. Say way that a maraschino cherry is a common garnish.
But both are non standard, so not having them would make it impossible to make - whereas a lack of sour mix/citrus juice would.
On the other hand, without butters an old fashioned is a bit harder to pull off.

By all means order them, very handy to have and take up no room. But don’t stress if they don’t arrive by Christmas and you still want a sour.

Black label is nice, if you can get it for around 30.

    Agreed, very easy drinking.

I really like the double black too, it's peated but not overly so. Again, very easy drinking and probably a nice gateway into the peated Islays (I believe it's made with Caol Ila). Also gettable for around 30 and it's great value at that

All these bitrers/sours queries confirm for me the fact that an awful lot of Irish people don't know the difference between sour and bitter.
Many think these words mean the same thing.
Many say bitter when they mean sour.

Is this just an Irish thing or do people the world over struggle to distinguish the difference between sour and bitter?

JWB for 30 is extremely rare, Tesco currently should have it for that though. 35 is the usual offer price; its approaching 50 when not on offer which is not worth it.

I stock up at 30, though.

The Double Black is £27.45 on Amazon at the minute. Was gonna hold off on buying anymore whiskey though as I've plenty in stock at the minute and expect to get a few more this week as well.

I’ve never heard of Double Black before. Sounds nice. Def being added to my list!

Entirely dependent on what recipe you're trying to follow, surely. I like the bitters on top of mine. If I'm trying to make a whiskey sour with bitters, and I don't have bitters, I'm a bit (lol) goosed, no?

Does anybody know where to get bitters for whiskey sours. I want to make some over Christmas but none in Tesco or Dunnes. What can I substitute for it? Fresh lemon and lime juice? Thanks

There’s nothing straightforward that you can substitute for bitters really...

The Celtic Whisky Shop and most off licences will have a selection.

The Daily Mash raises the possibility that not everyone has developed a taste for whiskey yet..

MEN across the UK are bracing themselves for pretending to savour a single malt whisky this week.

    SuperValu Lucan Powers 1L €26

OBriens Off licence ( same location ) Aberlour A’bunadh €75 reduced by €22.50
It’s Batch 65 which some reviews say is inferior but it sure tastes like €75 whisky to me !

Was tempted to keep the scotch Uber Sherry Bomb ( Thermonuclear device !) secret to myself , very rare in Republic and unheard of at that price but maybe I’m hoping some of you will go and buy the few bottles left to prevent me doing so !

The same price gets you a litre of Glenfarclas 105 but the A’bunadh is the real deal whereas the 105 betrays the 60% alcohol more crudely ( ‘cheaper’ taste )

I don’t pay over 79.99 for whiskey on principle and never thought I could afford a bottle of this

It’s got a genuine wax seal a first for me

Benefits from a few tiny drops of water . This HAS to be the top of the Sherry Bomb hill .Def better than the later bottling of Teeling Brabazon Vol1 and ‘probably ‘ earlier one too .

( The Powers tastes REALLY weird -not in a good way -when drunk after this !)

What's a good whiskey to drop €100 on? Something fancy, for an occasion. Can be less than 100, but not over.

Also considering a wine or 2 but I've already got 3 fancy bottles that were gifted to me put away for future drinking so thinking the whiskey is a better bet at the moment.

This might appeal to you so... Knappogue Castle 12yo Barolo wine cask finish is 90e in CWS
    https://www.celticwhiskeyshop.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=19876&search=Knappogue+castle

Tesco have a Barolo for 20e btw.

Or Waterford Ratheadon is about 75e if you havent tried any of their output yet.

Batch 65 is the only one I've tried and it was a mighty drop. If it's inferior I'd love to try the superior batches.

The Glengoyne 25 year old is the best sherry bomb I've ever tasted but it's 420 euros in Celtic Whiskey. Luckily I got that sample and the A'Bunadh from the same friend as it's too rich for me. Worth tracking down though if you ever get the opportunity.
