Bought a Shotgun, Restricted or not?

Hi all, quick question, I just bought a 1979
A5 Light 12 semi auto.

Do I apply for a restricted licence or a normal, its my third firearm in the house.

its for hunting only, im no longer a club member and wont be joining another club. ( Too much infighting and clickyness involved )
All of my licences so far are on Land permissions nothing to do with club membership.

Its a Japan made model with fixed full choke but im willing (if only cause i may have to) to buy a more open barrel in the future to work with steel .

One More question, sorry.
Reason for on licence application.
I need it for close up work in Forestry controlling Rats, Squirrells, Fox, Corvids etc. good enough?

Can it hold a total of three cartridges or less ? If the answer is yes it’s unrestricted if it holds more than three it’s restricted.

im told it holds 3 by the dealer, but i guess its got a magazine blocker in it.

If that magazine plug can’t be readily removed without the use of tools it’s unrestricted as far as I know.

No need to guild the lilly there MS.;)It says adapted or modified to be incapable of holding more than 3 shots... No need to give them ideas.;)

"Vermin control" is good enough an explanation.:)

Yup,if you just want it unrestricted leave it in and you are golden.
The act doesn't specify HOW mechanically these blocks are to be installed,it says "render incapable" the guns are to be put to 3 shots.[At least we are still trusted on that level, sofar.]
You can always at a later stage apply for it to be restricted if you find that 3 shots arent enough for the flocks of pigeons and crows and you want to run it by toy Cheif Super then.

Thanks for the replys application hitting the desk in the morning.
Its a lovely gun and my dealer recons not 100 rounds through it yet and I trust him. Private appointment only RFD no shop or adverts just a real nice guy.

My son tells me its the Red Dead Redemtion semi auto (video game), but I wouldnt know, he's as delighted as I am!!

Great guns.I cut my teeth duck hunting on my grandfathers 1950s A5, that he pretty much used as his walking stick. They are dirt eaters in ammo. Stuff anything into them and if set up properly will fire it and spit it out.
Just keep the mag tube spring and tube well oiled and put the recoil spring ring in the right place.[Bottom of the tube,then the recoil spring for heavy loads],and that's about it really for this gun in maintenance and set up.

They were famously used by the British in the malaysian jungle when there was a communist insurgency in the 1950's. The rifle was useless in close combat when you couldn't see your opponent often only a few yards away.

I did and now the son has it. It’s a Liege made 12g 3”. A little bit of trouble with the trigger/safety spring but I’ll source one soon. Otherwise it’s a great piece of kit. Ok, by modern standards they may be a bit heavy and clunky but a lot of modern semi’s would never stand up to the use and abuse you can give one of those old beasts.

If you would have any ejection issues here’s a little tip for you.

Before you do anything else check if the friction rings are inserted correctly and rub a drop of good gun oil on the magazine tube.

The second thing to do is remove the stock and remove and clean the bolt return/action spring. It can pick up quite a bit of crud over time and an overnight soak in oil followed by a good scrub with an old tooth brush works wonders.

It is, going strong since the early 20th century. It’s been hunting and fighting in pretty much unchanged form since and has been in production for most of the 20th century.

It’s most specialised application probably was during WWII teaching USAAF bomber crews to shoot at moving targets from a moving platform.

Hunting wise it’s probably been used to hunt just about everything from snipe to deer.

Its brave of anyone to buy anything right now, shooting is fcuked for this season with the virus, and god alone knows what will happen with the lead. If the green wally party has their way, it'll all be gone, but we might get a compromise. Will there be compensation if your gun is made obsolete over night ?

No,because they arent confiscating your property.And they now consider with the EU Soviet court ruling on this as a privilidge to liscense,own and get tested ,and fight for your private propertyin the form of firearms.

So IOW ,the EU charter on human rights to own proprty like the wall of rights in the barn in Orwells Animal farm,can be wilfully changed by the EU pigs when and to what it suits.

Doesn't the presumption of innocence stretch back to Magna Carta in English common law, even the Americans base their laws on it. As Horace Rumpole said "Everyman is presumed innocent, until 12 puzzled old darlings taken at random off the street say otherwise".

I know its an unpopular opinion in Ireland, but i really do think the British are correct getting the hell out of the eussr.

Not everything is a right. Driving is a privilege, a group from the UK went to the EU courts over the requirement to implicate yourself with a fixed penalty notice, and it now appears that shooting is also. So you only have the presumption of innocents when your rights are affected not your privileges.

We were quite good at removing guns from people before we joined the EU. If you think that we, a small country with no natural resources, would be better outside of the biggest trading block in the world you are as deluded as the Brexiters.

Sorry, please don't call me deluded because my opinion differs from the accepted official one, i didn't insult you. Exactly the same thing was said when Ireland left the British empire/commonwealth. We left that to regain our soverignty, then handed it to the unholy alliance of France and Germany, the only two countries that actually count in the eussr.

That English motorists group was completely mistaken. You’re not required to pay fixed penalty notices or to send in your driving licence as it’s done in the UK. One was and is free to say thanks but no thanks I’ll take my day in court.

And you misread the post. The second point was on a presumption of innocence under EU Soviet law being abused on two counts on two different topics.
[1] Violation of EUCHR article 5. That, if the state confiscates your property,it must recompense you to the market value of the item confiscated PRE confiscation date. IOW as a certain Herr Hitler was reliving a certain religion and others of their valuable property and paying a pittance for such.This was set up to prevent such happening again. Except if you happen to be a gun owner it seems,and live in Ireland and have certain types of firearms or high capacity mags.Which other EU countries got around by simply allowing those that have them to keep them.Even the UK has compensated shooters 3 times for confiscated property. The 3rd time just this month with MARS rifles.

2] Presumption of innocence is now gone in the lead shot debacle. Cross your land with lead shot to go after pheasants and you pass within 100 meters of a "wetland" which under EU definition is a puddle that formed on a field after a good rain shower, you are breaking the law as you had lead shot ammo in a wetland area, despite not even having an intent to use it or even have the gun with you!!! UP TO YOU to prove you had no intent to use it or knowingly intended to do such...Simplified a lot this example, but that's how crazy that new legislation is on this.

I wouldn’t be anti-EU in essence but I’ll be the first one to argue that the EU needs to be seriously looked at and go back to the drawing board. I’m all for continent wide food security, integration of strategic industries under joint governance, safe product standards, multi national management of natural resources, monetary stability and so on but that leaves you with the elephant in the room.

Organisations like the EU will always go on a power grab, wether that’s driven by it’s senior officials to justify their existence or driven by the desire of some of it’s member states to control other member states I don’t know but the problem is that in the end you end up with a very powerful supra national authority with practically zero accountability.

Well yeah, if your pockets stretch to several millions in legal fees you may go and try your hand in Luxembourg after you’ve exhausted the national legal system.
