    Thanks for the replies lads.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I've no bother installing a drive into the box. By install I meant the operating system. Would I have to reflash using a USB key like the first day?

The cloning was just an idea I had. But on reflection I might just put in the new drive and get the box up and running. I can put the old one in a caddy and put recordings back a few at a time. No doubt I could whittle down the 660 and put anything important on another drive.

It's been squeaking a lot lately so I'd rather get everything off it as soon as possible.

I got the SSD yesterday and stuck it in. Not a bother in the world .

I put the old drive in a caddy and the laptop doesn't do ext4 files. I plugged it into the back of the box and FZ can see it. I'm not familiar with Linux so can't find a cut and paste option to copy stuff over to the new drive.

I can copy stuff to the laptop and then back to the box. Seems like a lot of work seeing the old HDD is already plugged into the box.

    Any tips appreciated.

The 4-page postcard manual that came in the Tiviar box is very close to useless. From the Tiviar Remote Control manual I found on the 'net at https://www.manualslib.com/manual/794398/Tiviar-Alpha-Plus.html?page=66&term=Remote+Control+codes&selected=1#manual
    on page 66, it says:

"A user can transform the remote control into a universal remote control by entering a 4-digit remote control code for the TV.
Turn on the TV, and follow these steps:
    1. Find the TV's brand name from the list of remote control codes.
    2. Press the TV button and the and the OK simultaneously for 2 seconds
The TV button blinks twice........ "

I tried the above #2 step with two Tiviar Remote Controls - the TV button DOES NOT blink at all. So even if I could find a code for my Samsung UE40H6400AKXXU, I need to get the TV remote control button blinking first. Any ideas?

The postcard manual applies to the original software, so it is useless with Enigma2.

I have programmed the remote to control my LG tv, just following the instructions. We now use the Tiviar remote, only. (This is despite having a harmony remote and at least two other programmable remotes.)

You won't find codes for TVs that weren't available when the Firtis manual was written. Just try the codes from other models of tv from that manufacturer. I think you can also get it to search through codes until the tv turns on/off. But I can't be certain as it is a long time since I set it up.

You don't need linux. You can see the box in windows explorer, including any external HDD plugged in to any USB port. The easiest approach is to open two windows, one pointing to the external drive and one pointing to the directory on the SSD. Then copy and paste.

Thanks NCM. I tried explorer but just seeing C / D/ and E.

As newclareman said, windows can do it now. It became supported natively in the Windows 10 version 2004 update (May 2020) . If you don't see the drive then you should probably check your windows update menu and apply the latest updates.

If you are on an older windows os like windows 7 or 8 the you can use something like minitool partition manager or paragon partition manager.

NewClareman, thanks! But even if I do find the codes for the UE40H6400AK Samsung TV I have , the #2 step (2. Press the TV button and the and the OK simultaneously for 2 seconds - the TV button blinks twice...). The TV button doesn't do anything - zilch! And I damned if I can find the relevant Fortis user manual on the net. Any other ideas?

If you can’t see the box with Windows Explorer it is almost 100% certain that Samba needs to be restarted. (It doesn't matter what version of windows, even XP.)

Go to network under system settings. One of the headings includes Samba, I forget which. If Samba is stopped it will be flagged in red and you have the option to start it. Give it a couple of minutes and you should then see the box. While you're at it make sure the option to start Samba is flagged.

Let me mooch one more question - one that has been touched on in other areas of this forum.....

I have a dangerous knowledge of Windows 10, but less than zero knowledge of Linux. I was trying to ftp or tunnel into the Tiviar box - just to be able to push or pull files to/from the box over the internal Lan/WiFi. I was able to map a network drive using the http://192.168.1.xxx, and I was able to hit the box because it asked me for a login name and password
I used "root" as the login name but I've no clue on what password I should use. Actually, I did try leaving it blank, but it didn't like it
Any ideas on a password that'll work?

Firstly you don't need to use ftp. Once Samba is running you can see the Tiviar A+ in Windows Explorer. I don't use this image but I suspect the credentials are: username: root, password: tempass

By the way,the good news is that windows 10 now supports a full Linux kernel, as an optional install. It could allow you to extend your dangerous knowledge into Linux :)

Cheers. I'll try that when I get home.

Is the Samba setting on the box of the PC?

Samba is on the box under Network-Utilities.

Thanks. Found it and "Autostart" is enabled and status is "running". Back to the laptop and Network discovery and sharing was off. Turned that on and I was straight in. I've old and new drives in two windows side by side. I deleted a load of stuff last night using Firezilla.. I can now re organise recordings, put them in folders and drag into the new drive. Anything I want to keep can go on another drive I have.

    True, Gerry.

Every day is a schoolday. Most of the time the box runs like a dream but then when I have to do something I can't remember how I did it the last time. Great community of folks here to help out.

As an added bonus, when I pulled the caddy out of a box I found a 500GB HDD that I took out of the lads' PS4. I got 2x1TB drives when I got the tiviar. I'd intended to re-format it and use it for storage. Been there for two and a half years and never saw the light of day till last Saturday.

    Any ideas?

Would anyone here be able to explain (or point me to a tutorial on) how to set up a simple cronjob on this box to hit an API. Ive tried and failed to set one up to update my IP with my smartdns provider. I can access the API successfully on my windows laptop but can't get it to run on the tiviar. The tiviar is always on so it would save me doing it manually every day.

What is the latest version of software for this box?, I think I have 6.1. Is there a Sky skin also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,956 ✭✭✭greasepalm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 375 ✭✭a clanger

I would be very wary about moving to OpenATV 6.4, without having a very good reason to do so. There is no additional functionality, that I know of, and a real possibility of instability. The Tiviar Alpha+ is not a prime target of any build and I suspect that testing is limited.

I moved to OpenATV 6.3, once a stable version was available. It gave lots of problems and I rolled back to OpenATV 6.1. I only went back to OpenATV 6.3 earlier this year. I only moved because it had improved EPG capability.

    Thanks for the advise guys.
Is there a download for skins as I'd like to change to a Sky type look and a change of picons?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,825 ✭✭✭swoofer

using a sky skin can cause more trouble than its worth but KIDDAC skins is what yu want. go to lhttps://www.linuxsat-support.com/. its all there.

here is kiddac skin but you have to read a bit. this is the one i like but not in a tiviar.

There is a 'Sky Type' skin but I haven't used it. AFAIK it can't be downloaded from the feeds, most likely due to copyright issues. There are also reports that it can cause stability issues.

So I have the Tiviar's Samba Setup set at Autostart:Enables; and Current Status:Running. I am running Windows 10. I turned on Network Discovery, and Turned on File and Print Sharing
I try to Map a Network drive Z: to 192.168.1.186, hit Browse, another window comes up giving me my laptop computer name, and the TIVIARAPLUS item. When I click on TIVIARAPLUS item, the system asks me for a User Name and Password.
I entered my Microsoft Username and Password, or, My Laptop's Username and Password, but it says either 1-Invalid Username and/or Password, or, 2-Access Denied. Needless to say, I need your help please.

The box is looking for a user name and password. If you haven't already done so, go into the box network settings menu and set a password. Reboot the box for it to take effect. The username is "root". AFAIK you cannot leave the password blank.
EDIT:- be careful using this method as it gives you full access to the inner workings of the box. If you simply want to access/download recordings I would recommend using WEBIF instead.
