Did you post this in the wrong thread?

You agree with too rate of motor tax of e1809 and e2350 do you ? The huge tax take at the pump, linked to how much you drive and what you drive, isn't enough?

I used to own 97-LK-1, a XJ6. I'd say there is a very good chance that my old car was traded in for this

Would it have been originally the Lord Mayors car for that year? Normally Limerick's first is reserved for the mayor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,086 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Lord mayor's car was xx-L-1, LK was Limerick county

Do they still use L and LK these days or is it all just L?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,769 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

All Limerick City and Limerick County use the one L reg letter since 2013. As said Lord Mayer of the city would have had xx-L-1 even before that change as on the city had a Lord Mayer. I'd say there was a good chance that XJ8 reg was reserved.

Thats definitely a barge alright, can't say I like the styling at all though, its aged terribly , unlike its direct competitor the escalade which has been aging a hell of a lot better.

I do have a soft spot for gigantic American 'lux' SUV's though.

Like that Escalade that is around Athlone for years, but unfortunately never really comes to sale :)

Less than a years tax in asking price. Type of car you could buy and if rural etc, or not much usage, let them seize it if you ever did get stopped

Sadly, brilliant cars are put on the scrap heap due to exorbitant tax rates.

The greenest thing our government could do with old cars is give them a reduced tax rate. Anything is greener than scraping good cars.
15 years old - half tax
30 years old - vintage tax as currently in place.

I would give all cars on the old system (cc) the option to go on to the new (CO2) system if it is lower. Then apply a reducing rate until it gets to the €56, so there is not the huge change in 2008, nor at 30 years. That would stabilise the 2nd hand market, and stop the senseless scrapping and neglect of perfectly useable cars.

Perhaps only apply the reduction if the car is continuously taxed. Tax holidays mean a holiday for the discount.

Planned Obsolescence is the biggest CO2 emitter.

    But the government enforce it.

The Motor Tax regime is anything but green. Perfectly good cars that are starved of proper maintenance because of the CC rates of motor tax, and also suffer horrendous depreciation for the same reason.

The whole system needs to be redrawn to tackle this problem. After all, the CC tax is now twelve years old and all the cars are down to scrap value or are worth more in parts - just because of the tax.

Luxobarges are a lot of car for not much money, and if the tax was scrapped or was sensible, then there would be very few less than five grand.

Personal opinion currently. Probably wouldn't touch most barges. RIP off tax on cc and dont rate the looks of them, the way I see it is I'd stick with what I have and go for something in a year or two, when you can get them.at reasonable tax and far better looking cars. Like facelift s class with Amg kit et . Personally I see no point being fleeced for something average looking and massive tax...

Better off keeping it unless they have no need for it and dont have another car bought already...

It's like the issue I mention above, very little prestige, mad running costs what's the point...

Those have dated badly but for an older person who wanted something to float around in, a good one of those would be hard to beat.
A younger man would look silly in that imo.

I'm guessing they got a new car, and want some of the tax money back?

What was the point of coming into a luxobarge thread and stating this? Its like walking into McDonalds and telling everyone you don't want their food!:rolleyes::rolleyes:
