Eh the casedemic theory has fallen flat on it's face.

We'll see. Nobody can say either way with any certainty

A few vaccines change things Big time.

    True.

There is still uncertainty and we are (in a controlled way) making it up as we go along. Vaccines are definitely going to help but will not be the panacea that some think.

    1) it's not clear, yet, how long immunity lasts
    2) it's not clear, yet, if an immune person can transmit the disease

Hopefully the combination of vaccines and improved knowledge of the disease will allow us to get back to a less restrictive way of life.

429 today, 629 next week and 1200+ by NYE. Numbers are the most import name in the Covid Game.

    Covid and winter dont go.

If the vaccine stops transmission, then even if only 20% of us have had it by summer it could be a game changer.

If it doesn't, then it'll probably be a bit of a slog for a while.

The other big thing to pray for is an early and decent spring. I'm pretty gloomy about that prospect though, with good reason.

Less cases in last 7 days than previous

    Unfortunately this is true.

Coronavirus spreads fastest at 4ºC according to the scientists.

Fully expect to be back in 1000 cases in the next day or so. Dublin center packed to the roof. If they keep reporting lower numbers I think its evidence of mass scale manipulation of numbers by the government. You cant have whats happening in Dublin and not be in the 1000s soon.

Which is gonna mean back to level 5 right before Christmas - but they might purposefuly hide the spike until after the new year. We will see if they are honest or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,486 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

We will require new tougher measures just before or just after Christmas.

Cases are on the way up because less pressure is being applied. It will keep going that way faster and faster until suppressive policies are reapplied.

This is cause and effect. It's not breaking news.

I stand by what I said from the beginning of the month. No one will care about Christmas afterward and the irresponsibility of lifting restrictions will not have been worth it as people will see.

Have you more than one days evidence cases are on the way up? Lower cases than 8 days ago by the way

This is the big unknown, currently. The vaccine may stop you getting the disease but might not stop you passing it on. It could be the 'syptomless' carrier scenario all over again.

    Hopefully not.

Nobody knows what's coming down the line, certainly not beyond 6 months or thereabouts. The UK already have (limited) people at sporting events- with a vaccine here, rolled out efficiently, we might very well have gigs back in some form by the end of summer/autumn.

It will be fine. No flu identified. That was always a klaxon for the trolley watch

But January is yet to come I suppose.

Yes. Because of the restrictions we applied (that you were against), to combat the rapidly rising cases (that you said wouldn't happen).

I really struggle to understand why some people place so much emphasis on single day figures. They can be distorted by all sorts of factors. The 7 and 14 day averages remain low and stable. I would expect them to increase on the back of easing of restrictions, but that does not mean we will automatically end up back where we were when Level 5 restrictions were applied in October. We are currently experiencing levels of infection of not much more than a quarter of what they were back in October

Because its the numbers. Numbers either rise or fall and sometimes remain static for a few weeks. I suspect we have gone from a peak in October to falling numbers in late November. The numbers have been static for 2 to 3 weeks, and they will now rise.
Higher numbers, larger transmission, eventually more hospitalizations and eventually more deaths. Deaths start with rises in daily numbers

Apologies if I have it wrong, but I recall you losing the rag at Holohan prior to level 3.

To wit you called him power mad or something like that, as he was recommending tight restrictions.

What do you see happening in January, raind? Are you still of a sunny disposition?

I don't like Holohan yeah, and his level 5 was rejected.
That does not mean I am anti-restrictions, bizarre conclusion.
