In my opinion they are rolling it out to deflect from the ****show that is Brexit
Smoke and mirrors come to mind

Oh look, I don't think they had completely altruistic reasons for approving that batch on an emergency basis. But no matter what your assessment of the risk is, no country really wanted to be the first to approve and roll out. If they did, all the individual EU regulators could have done the same thing as the British. We're all happy to sit back and see how the UK roll it out, what mistakes they make on logistics, and in the tiny tiny chance that this vaccine causes more significant side effects then at least we will have vaccinated less people.

I am sure the UK government know all of this, and the catastrophic consequences that would happen to the Torys if they f*ck up the roll out or it turns out that their regulator missed something in their review. I'm sure they'd be happy to sit back and learn from another country too. But they have other pressing matters to deflect from, so took the leap.

The only place I would be okay with seeing masks post-pandemic is on public transport, if you are sick and are sneezing and coughing. It won't eliminate cold viruses, we'll still catch a couple of colds every winter, but it might mean that you don't lurch from one virus to another between October and April.

Other than that, masks should be burned at the end of this.

Really positive day with the first vaccine being rolled out. What an uplifting day.

The only place I wanna see them is in history books and movies about the Covid bug.

Our vaccine rollout tiers have been agreed.

Over 65s in nursing homes first

    https://twitter.com/gavreilly/status/1336284493733302272?s=19

Any other decision would be bonkers! Deaths immediately slashed in half just like that with this move no matter how much Covid spreads

Be amazing if nursing home visits could begin properly again soon, my heart goes out to residents in them the last year they can be such depressing places to stay in without some news and interaction from the outside world , know a few people who died in nursing homes the last 9 months and it was such agony for the families and residents being so isolated. But there wasn't really any other feasible solution really without a vaccine

Hopefully the take up of the vaccines will be large

Would be great to get immunity into vulnerable categories so we can reduce deaths

Certainly in the vulnerable categores I expect it will be. Older people are tired of being afraid, and are the cohort who've seen far more covid deaths amongst their friends and family than anyone else.
Ffor them the pragmatic approach says that in the unlikely event that the vaccine has minor side-effects, they're of an age where it doesn't really matter anyway.

Interesting to read when you go down through the tiers. I have questions:

    - key workers: who are these people? Not HCW, they have their own category. Not teachers, they have their own category. A category further down specifically states "key workers in essential jobs who cannot avoid a high risk of exposure...to include food supply..." etc, so they don't mean meat factory workers or supermarket staff here. Could it be.........politicians?

    - Those in the entertainment industry are getting vaccinated before the general 18-54 age category?? Why?

    - Interesting to see that 18-34 will be prioritised over 34-54 year olds, due to their "increased level of social contact and role in transmission". I'm not sure there is any actual evidence that 18-34 year olds have played a larger role than transmission than their 34-54 year old compatriots, other than anecdotal twitter posts. It's probably to enable them to go back out spending their money in pubs and clubs again.

My personal reading of it on your questions

    1. Gardai & other members of emergency services that aren't HCW. Bus drivers ( high social interaction) etc

    2. Listed as important to the functioning of society. By this stage you'd imagine alot of restrictions will be gone or low, makes sense to have those who come in contact with multiple different people for hours every day to be ahead of say me who works in an office with the same people.

    3. 18-34 would probably be out and about more than other groups, pubs, clubs, travelling etc. More social contact so again makes a bit of sense.

    Couple of questions

    - What about children with serious underlying health conditions ?

    - What about adults with special needs (not in residential units) ?

Where do they fit in to this Vaccine Schedule?

Unfortunately none of the vaccines have been fully tested on children (pfizer have started a study on age 12 - 18), so it's likely there won't be enough safety data to include children in any roll out yet.

Adults with special needs might fit into group 7, but really should be much higher, whole thing needs a lot of fleshing out.

I wonder will they do something like they did with the Swine Flu Vaccine ?
Our daughter was an infant and couldn't have the Vaccine so the rest of our household was vaccinated to protect her. Sooner than we would have been in our own rights.

Children are at the lowest risk from the virus so there is no need to rush to vaccinate them. They’d be last in line anyway.

Actually got a bit emotional seeing the pic of the lady getting the vaccine, all chilled-out looking with her Christmas top on. When we see that image, we’ll always remember that it came just before Christmas to give us hope for the new year.

Sorry, not sure but I believe the Pfizer vaccine hasn’t been tested on Children (or pregnant women afaik) yet so there will be no approval for use in children for a few more months at least.

Politicians should get it as a matter of priority. TD’s anyway.. there are only 160 of them and for their job and responsibility... need it.

The entertainment industry..... how does one provide evidence that they are of the entertainment industry ? You could have some 78 year old who played drums for Sonny Knowles back in the Braemore Rooms in 1987 maintains they are of ‘the industry’.. a few lads in a band who work day jobs but gig at the weekend.

I’d prioritize alright the state broadcaster and its employees though... if covid numbers went through the roof... RTE is both an important tool of communication and entertainment..Around 1800 employees...

I was wondering if they would prioritise household members of at- risk children if those children can't get the vaccine themselves.

Can anyone point me to the link where they give the full list of groups for the vaccine, I can only see the RTE report which just lists the first 8 groups.

    TIA:)

Myself and my wife should be early enough getting the vaccine due to underlying conditions. Last August was supposed to be 10 days in Switzerland and 17 in Boston with the majority of that on Martha's vineyard. Hopefully we'll be in a position to do that this year.
