    First result on google.
    https://www.statista.com/statistics/375232/unemployment-rate-in-ireland/

Which is why I said you need to look past the headlines. Belgium’s unemployment rate is not 5%. This is their figure excluding Covid essentially. Our equivalent is 7% as published by the cso.

    A quick google of Belgium...
They also had 3.3 times as many deaths per capita...

Whatever about the spat you two are having, that clapping statement is very cynical.

While I never took part in standing outside and applauding, it's not for the HSE. It's for the staff working in the healthcare system, who despite the general inefficiencies of the system are doing everything they can to help everyone they can.

I had no spat with anyone, I just pointed out we're unprepared to roll out a vaccine as quick as we should and some random poster essentially told me to shut up and go away, like a mature person does.

I have nothing but respect for the HSE staff on the ground. They're Lions led by donkey's. People clapping out in the driveway isn't doing them any favours, voting for the same charlatans isn't doing them any favours either. It's time the government were held accountable for decades of mismanagement and failure rather than people being pandered to with guff like 'wearing the green jersey' and 'lockdown to save Christmas'

Again though, it’s easy to look around the globe and hand pick a country currently struggling.

People have been randomly hand picking these countries to justify our cowardly response.

I have a strong feeling that next year we will see the results of our cowardly response.

Excess deaths will probably be in line with most years as well, I know restrictions were a cause of this being so low but did we really need to be the most strict in Europe when up to 70% of deaths happened in nursing homes, we failed our elderly population but nphet will be held up as some sort of hero's.
How could excess deaths be in line with most years? Excess deaths are the numbers of deaths from all causes above the number of deaths we would normally expect in a year.

Has it crossed your mind that other covid measures such as social distancing, hand washing and mask-wearing will have fed into this as well? We all agree that the HSE is incompetent but to jump to that ludicrous conclusion sounds like something that belongs in the conspiracy theory forum. I doubt many people in this country are (a) terrified out of their minds and (b) praying for lockdowns. Less of the hyperbole ffs.

Par for the course on this forum. Question people’s blind faith and you’re sent to the conspiracy corner.

By the way, did I suggest that social distancing etc wasn’t keeping the numbers in hospitals down?

Our vaccine task force have yet to even meet. The Uk have already started training their NHS staff and have gotten the army involved. All of Scotland could be vaccinated by spring.

Germany have already asked the 16 states to get the addresses for the vaccination centres picked out. Japan hope to have everyone vaccinated by Summer.

It's going to be 6-12 months of dithering and excuses while we look like the slow kid at the back of the class

They met yesterday and the chair briefed the Taoiseach. There is also an Immunisation strategy group reporting to the Dept of Health and they have been meeting for weeks now.

I heard this statistic last week and it stuck.

There is 4 times more chance of you being diagnosed with cancer in the next 12 months than losing a loved one from COVID in the next 12 months.
Have you a link for that? I'm extremely curious as to how they did their calculations.

Two variables that I'm curious about, for example, are: how many covid deaths there are going to be in the next 12 months - people cast all sorts of aspersions on NPHET's modelling team, but are prepared to believe "some statistic some guy heard" claiming to know how many covid deaths there will be in the next 12 months, despite rather unpredictable variables like the growth rate, the restrictions to be implemented, people's adherence etc, and the effect of a vaccine.

And, how many "loved ones" are they saying a person has?

I don't know if the "four times more chance" is an overestimate or an underestimate, but any study claiming that is the actual figure is obviously complete horse manure, and I would give zero credibility to anything else the proponent tried to feed.

Of course, BringBackMick could have misremembered, or be talking crap.

Well that's good news anyway. Hopefully they can get the ball rolling. After all people have sacrificed it would be an insult for this to be screwed up.

You missed the point though. I admitted that was just the quickest google.

You are just picking a country currently doing bad in terms of Covid and saying at least we are not them....

Millions starve to death in Africa, at least we are not them. Right?

Our overall handling of Covid and society in general has been a joke. We actually have a fear meter to track how afraid our population is. People are drinking on the streets in winter because they are desperate for some company.

Jesus Christ pal:rolleyes:. Thev reason that the majority of people are drinking on the streets is because they have zero sense of personal responsibility.and don`t give a **** about anyone but themselves. For you to try and spin it otherwise is totally dishonest.

Why do you want to ask such logical questions?

It sounds plausible enough for people to believe it - isn't that enough for you!

I didn't pick it.. I just used the one you used.

But for Europe (with very sketched and probably inaccurate estimations), I think only Russia, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Latvia (of countries with population > 1000000) have had fewer cases per capita than us in the second wave.

Looks like there's an outbreak in Cork school. Only 6 cases in whole county in today's figures so maybe they're being reported tomorrow? https://twitter.com/ZaraKing/status/1331359275185213445?s=19

Wasn't there some lady on Twitter who used to keep fairly on top of those? (I don't follow her nor remember her name, uselessly..)

It is beyond belief what this nation is doing.

Finland has about 1/4 capacity at mass sporting events , cafes and bars are open across most of the country.

They have just marginally lower than our rate of infection at the moment.

Yet we are teasing our people, or fcuking citizens with allowing 3 families meet.

    These politicians have no shame.

They barely got elected and have been handed the most power of any government in our recent history.

Abuse this power and you will regret it - that is all the intelligent people in this coutry will say.

There will be tribunals on this moment in our history....be careful is all i would suggest to our elected representatives.... do not try and make a quick one on our constitution...

I'd say word will come out quick enough especially if the whole is school is closed. I'm not sure when school closures are involved they don't name it tbh. It will come out inevitably anyway and in meantime people will just be speculating anyway.

Yeah I'll probably find out in the morning, news spreads here like wildfire. Cork Safety Alerts usually have lists of the schools affected but they have nothing up now either.

    Pal

There is 750,000 kids in school everyday breathing on each other, RTE are having parties and hospital staff are having coffee's and eating sandwiches onsite

    Virus is airborne

The street is the safest place you can be right now

What are these "vested interests"? I won't believe "wanting to be on the telly" is one.

You'd wonder how much symptomatic and pre-symptomatic infection is an issue because thought cases seemed relatively low in Cork. But guess all it takes is 1 case to multiply. Would have thought bubble system would limit it too but could potentially have children from different bubbles or classes sharing same school bus say. Hope they investigate to learn lessons.
