They only tested 800 odd not 4 or 5000 like previous days

We could do that and our numbers would be 25

Ahhh Lord...I'm going to get some mileage out of these quotes for sometime to come

This is a sad reflection on you I'm afraid. Point scoring at a time like this. Are you really insecure?

(Agree that the Grandpa by the window thing is ridiculous)

Think it's more they're saying pubs that don't serve food won't open as opposed to playing games.

The same article is threatening further restrictions in January

If they don't allow those pubs to open it could be months down the road again

That could tie into changing the definition of pubs serving food though

Then keep them open long term

It does have an element of kite flying to it

The reaction on the Independent FB page to that section is not positive for the government

The cheek of RTE to have that idiotic gravy boat article plastered across their homepage

People might take it a bit more seriously if ye didn't have a ****ing party the other day lads

It could unfortunately but I don't think there was ever a guarantee that pubs that serve food would be able to reopen.

if that's what they're going for, then they'll likely push them back as far as they can; pubs particularly.

If the goal/realisation is that they get one shot at reopening these, then they're going to want to try and plan it so that vaccination can be at all helpful before the resultant rise in cases from the reopening of pubs and restaurants.

Based on what we know from the Summer, reopening restaurants on 1st December, will give us (at best) a pretty clear December & January with cases gradually rising through the months. We should be spared then from needing any drastic action (level 4+) until late Feb at the earliest. By which stage we could be well into a vaccination programme.

Foodless pubs are a bit of a wildcard in this regard. They may be limited to outside service only for the forseeable.

Nobody's lying. Nobody is saying schools don't have cases.

Just that schools aren't a major driver of transmission.

We don't have significant numbers of outbreaks in schools.

We dont and that is because kids are deemed asymptomatic to a high degree.
But yet the asymptomatic are still called the main reason for public health measures like masks and distancing.

    So what is it now?

The last time we had less than 200 positive swabs was 19th September. However, 190 is the lowest since 10th September (122)

    From The Examiner:
"The Government is to allow people to visit their family members on Christmas Day — but hugging their relations will not be permitted."

The government is utterly out of touch with reality.

Is the bolded bit a quote from the government or wording from the examiner? I'm not so sure the government guidelines would state that this is not permitted, I'd imagine it would be more of a request or advisory.

I guess the usual perpetually outraged folk have fallen for that hook, line and sinker so well done to the Examiner for pissing some people off more than they already are and for undermining everyone's efforts. Bravo. Top shelf reporting.

3rd highest headline on RTE now. Hard to fathom how infantile it looks.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Actual cases 543. 350 cases relate to early October but we wont say.

It`s a quote from the Examiner article. There has not been nor, as you have stated, is there likely to an official government or public health announcement using that wording.

Thank you. I wish people would just stop for a second when they see headlines. We're becoming a very reactionary bunch.

Maybe 40-50. Any attempt to guess the backlog has always been hit-and-miss. One day last week there were 100 new cases above the swab number when no backlog was expected.

The upper limit on cases today is 300, IMO. But guessing at the actuall number on a daily basis is banned :)

Funny how you weren't saying that when we were actually in Level 3 six weeks ago, repeatedly admonishing Government for wanting to give level 3 a chance to work rather than move with NPHET's advice immediately to Level 5. Has since been proven that the bulk of the good work was done while in Level 3. How much debt has been added and jobs have been cost by that decision?

Now though it's going the other direction it suits you to stick with 3 for a period, rather than the rush through the levels you wanted 6 weeks ago.

I think the decision to move quickly from level 3 to level 5 was the right one at the time. The context was different to how it is now - cases were rapidly escalating, we didn't have the luxury of waiting around to see if level 3 worked. They had to take decisive action and they should have taken it sooner.

Saying we can attempt to go to level three now is not the same as saying we should have stayed in level three as case numbers were going up and up. At least now cases have declined, they are still pretty high in my view, but at least the trend is downward. That's not the same situation that existed in October.

Is it an absolute certainty that level three works? No, it isn't. We'll find out soon enough. I personally think we're fooling ourselves about what the likely outcome is, but I accept that people's patience probably can't take level 5 any longer and another approach has to be trialled for a while to see how it goes. Going to level 2 straight away would be just plain stupid.
