Bars closing at 10pm? Like an invite to "let's go back to my house for a few jars" when they're kicked out.

It's only since 2000 that we have had a difference between winter and summer closing times in pubs and opening after 11pm.
I've gone back for drinks at 4am when places that had theatre licences closed up for the night, lots of fond memories of the likes of the viper rooms and the gaeity theatre for the late drinking times.

Hard to find a place outside of Dublin that served (legally) after 2; Galway for example clubs closed at 1.30 when I lived there.

If people are going to head to house parties after 10 closing then most likely be back at a higher level again and same people moaning about it.

It literally beggars belief that we will probably go through not just a second but a a third round of delusional denial period of people somehow convincing themslves Ireland is immune to covid overwhelming hospitals based solely on the fact it hasn't happened already when we can plainly see what happened in Europe not once but twice before our very eyes . I just can't for the life of me understand how somebody could be wilfully that ignorant to reality

Am still waiting for the flu jab.

Am a bit concerned about the vaccine rollout. But hopefully it will be precise, timely and targeted quickly.

Are you waiting on your GP as pharmacies and chemists also giving it out?

They tried this in Finland. The law over there says pubs and restaurants are not allowed to sell alcohol after 10pm (during restrictions) and need to close for an hour, but it doesn't say nothing else. So what is happening now is that everyone gets last orders just before 10, then they close the pub and everyone goes outside (or home for more booze) - and then at 11pm the pub opens again as a "night cafe" - they're not allowed to sell alcohol, but the party still goes on.

The original idea was that truck drivers and healthcare workers and anyone else who works at night would be able to get their late night lunches, but then publicians figured out they could still get hundreds of people in late at night, if they only sold soft drinks and coffee.

So yeah, closing at 10pm won't exactly stop people from gathering somewhere.

Colds used to feature regularly in my life. When I got a cold, many times it developed into sinus infections and I would suffer for 2/3 months with headaches and pressure and sometimes loss of hearing in an ear.

I never once got sick last winter. I am looking after myself better and eating better and taking supplements and wrapping up warm when it's cold. I never got a cold this year either. I'm delighted. I put it down to all the covid measures and looking after myself better. I hope this good spell of health continues.

If the figures are still around the 150 to 300 cases case see us relaxing as the experts said. The cases will go back to 1000 after Christmas

I wouldn’t for a second suggest staying at level 5 indefinitely or til there’s vaccine roll out, but, given where we are relative to our European neighbours (ie pretty damn good) and how little capacity our health service has, you’d hate to think how history would judge us if we fecked it all away for a few Christmas pints and had to start over. Especially with a likely end or beginning of an end to this thing in sight.

Y’know I didn’t even realize until I read this that I didn’t get my usual flu/cold this year. I pretty consistently get sick mid November every year. Sometimes just a sniffle for a day or two, occasionally it’s bad, floored with fever, aches and sweats. I only ever remember because it’s always close to my birthday and I always have to change plans. This year nothing.

I’ve just jinxed the furk outta that haven’t I :pac:

I use sinus rinse every morning, it helps a lot, not the most pleasant experience when starting, but you get use to it

    Sunday Independent reports here (paywall):

    - Restrictions will be lifted on 1/2 December despite most people thinking that Tony will want to keep level 5.
    - Highest priorities are reopening non-essential shops, gyms and churches.
    - Hairdressers, beauticians and barbers also allowed open.
    - 50:50 if limited indoor dining will be allowed.
    - Highly unlikely that wet pubs will be allowed open.
    - 9 euro meal rule might be reconfigured.
    - "Enhanced level 3" to stay in place until vaccinations start in December/January.

Probably an element of kite flying but I think the vast majority will accept these level of restrictions from early December. What happens around Christmas itself is anyone's guess.

Now onto the 10pm closing rumour, that may work if they only plan on opening food pubs but it would appear those making the rules don't frequent regular pubs. Rare enough these days (covid excluded) but if I'm going for a few pints with the lads its unlikely we'd be in the pub before 9.30 or 10 anyway. By the time people have had dinner and got the kids settled it doesn't make it easy to get out much earlier.
As has been mentioned before there is definitely an anti alcohol bias among the nphet advisors.

The anti alcohol bias is probably down to two things:
The effect of alcohol on people in relation to this virus.
    They are healthcare professionals generally....

With schools closed it might be possible to keep the R0 at about 1 or so with those restrictions. Outdoor sports should be let resume.Generally quite safe and would do alot of people some good. Rather than congregating at indoor settings to meet people

And added to that alcohol related admissions to a&e must be way down which I'm sure takes a lot of pressure off staff at the weekends.

Seems stupid to relax most things and keep pubs etc shut.

People will just gather with less thought in homes than if they are in a pub/restaurant...

It would appear nothing has been learnt

Thought we saw the end of that nonsense rule in summer

It's been part of restaurant licensing laws for decades, why would they drop it now?

So before covid if I had ordered wings for 8 euro and a pint I would have been refused.

Is there going to be a rule against leaving your county at Christmas? If my young adults who I have barely seen all year, and who will be limiting contacts pre holidays, cannot travel home and spend a couple of weeks relaxing just with us, no other gatherings, in the middle of nowhere, I will be rather cross. There will be rule-breaking going on!

Exactly, this 'lockdown' hasn't felt any different. Loads of traffic on roads, people in towns.

Outrageous attitude. People need to be intelligent against the enemy that is coronavirus. People like you are the equivalent of informers in the war of independence.
