There is no way the government will keep restrictions until January like the French. France had 317,469 new cases today, we had 366.

Tony Holohan must be itching to do it.

The problem is that only the restrictions are preventing an out of control situation emerging.

Lifting them will lead to a surge inevitably.

Which is why I don't think they will lift them.

They may try tinkering around the edges but nothing drastic.

Just announced in France that current restrictions to go on until mid January.

There won't be much of a Christmas this year in Ireland either.

France has been open for months though, its easier for people to buy into it, we have had the longest restrictions in Europe and possibly worldwide, you can't keep telling people they are not doing enough.

People talk of Trump's performance on the virus but WTF has Macron been up to?

    That's a disgraceful figure.

    It's also complete bs tbf

It will wash with people who respect what we have to do.

All he was short of was riding a stallion, when he wanted Level 5 restrictions back in October the first time

They may tweak the restrictions slightly.

The next two tweaks are crucial.

Can they not just give it a chance? Close the schools now, see where we are at in the middle of December. If it's good then take us down to level 2:until after Christmas.

People talk about schools being important for children, Christmas is very important for them.

agree. can't they just stick on a few extra weeks in the summer? would be the smart move here.

We could be in a bit of a pickle here if schools and the activity that takes place around them are keeping cases ticking along at a certain level. NPHET, in the job of their lives, have staked their reputation on the position that schools are a safe environment. To choose a different path now would be to give the impression that their previous conclusion was wrong and that they put people who go to schools at risk. I don't think we'll be seeing any change in their position for that reason and for that and other reasons I sincerely hope it is not the schools.

NPHET know the score on schools. They know the virus is spreading through there. The virus doesn't particularly have any preference for avoiding Irish schools as schools elsewhere in Europe are closing.

The situation on schools is this. . . that the public are fed ****e about them being "safe" with bogus stats. This is important so as to ensure public confidence as if parents start taking kids out of schools then they will have to close anyway.

However the virus ain't gonna play along with NPHET's BS on schools.

There won't be any easing of measures on December 1st

They will have to do something on 1 December.

I bet there will be an easing of restrictions but not a full Phase 3. My guess is gyms and non-essential retail will be allowed open but not restaurants (dine-in/outside) and not bars and the 5KM limit will stay in place till Christmas week.

You are really the only teacher I know who should really just stay at home and not go to work.

The rest are getting on with it.

Oh god you're right, I pasted the wrong figure.

That's what a 3 hour maths lecture does to you :(

Last Tuesday had 16 deaths reported. Today 11 hmm.

Apparently the no of deaths comes from those officially notified by the family, not HSE internal data or anything like that. Most people probably only get round to notifying the Monday the week after the burial.

    5-day average: 427.6. (yesterday it was 433.4)

    7-day average: 413.6 (Previous 7 days: 421.6)

    14-day cases/100k: 122.77 (7 days ago: 152.69)

In hospital: 274 In ICU: 31 ( 7 days ago in hospital 282 in ICU 40)

Any reason why the current restrictions aren't up for review?

The level 5 restrictions was applied until December 1st and was to reviewed after four weeks as stated gov.ie and 4 weeks into these current restrictions is this Thursday.

    Honestly.

He said there is no appetite politically to extend it and its highly unlikely.

They know the public are fed up of NHPET.
