It's great to have two options.

It means one can fail safety and we can still get over it.

It also means we wont be as reliant on ultimate freezing which could have been a major negative.

It also means we can roll out much quicker rather which means people won't be waiting as long.

Onwards towards safety information releases for both and hopefully emergency use authorisation.

Are Oxford/Astrazeneca expected to have interim results this side of Christmas ?
It would be great if 3 came through going into the new year, even for just giving people optimism that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

    Great news about Moderna

Interesting to note that when you check their share price over the last 5 days, they've been doing amazing. But when you look at Pfizer's, they had a one day bump and have been dropping sharply since

Looks like the market has more confidence in Moderna

Two completely different companies. Pfizer are an established company with a whole suite of product lines. Moderna are a startup who are just proving their primary unproven product. Pfizer’s market cap is 6 times that of Moderna and Moderna’s has grown 4.5x this year alone.

I might add here as well when the efficiency data is fully released there may be questions as to do younger groups of the population require 2 doses ?? The response may be good enough without two doses, older age groups 2 doses would seem more realistic.

Would enable a bit more freedom in allocation if it were possible

AZ/Oxford and J&J might be able to do this with a single shot in the younger population. The mRNA constructs don't seem to do so well on a single shot.
If the mice experiments are anything to go by then the elderly population will absolutely need the two shots even from J&J and Novavax.

Just curious as to whether them being a startup would colour people's view of them and/or their vaccine ?

Theranos springs to mind for me! It is kind of funny that on Wikipedia, when you go on the Theranos page, it highlights other companies people search for; "WeWork, Enron and Moderna" are included. It is just a healthy skepticism, the proof will be in the pudding.

I await the negative spin on this news from the media.

RTE are furiously forming a committee headed up by McDonkey to drown out this latest breakthrough

Yes. That's why it's important the regulators reviewing their data are independent. They've also partnered with Lonza who are a big Swiss pharma for the actual manufacturing. It's not Moderna saying the trial was successful, it's the independent monitoring board.

All the more reason Pfizer's price should be skyrocketing though no?

    They've a proven pedigree. Moderna haven't

First of all its Pfizer and BioNtech.

    BioNtech have risen significantly.

Pfizer have 100 other products. If their vaccine works it's just one more a few % extra revenue especially after BioNtech take their share.

Moderna have less other products so the vaccine would have a bigger effect.

Moderna CEO. Particularly excited about the severe Covid results - 11 in the placebo group, but none in the vaccine group. Hopes it will hold with a bigger number of cases. They hope to get the final study results in not too distant future as Covid cases are increasing.

Who's next with a great announcement?

    Oxford?

    J&J?

I think we'll be getting positive announcments like this on a weekly or fortnightly basis for the next while

Gottlieb very bullish. If the vaccines are this effective at reducing disease, you have to believe that it is also having an effect in reducing transmission.

We all know what he's gonna say, absolutely nothing positive about it, we must wait, more data, mightn't get a vaccine, etc.

If you take the Pfizer and the Moderna vaccine at the same time will it give you 184.5% effectiveness?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,004 ✭✭✭Hmmzis

Here is a nice link ( for anyone interested in statistics and the way how efficacy estimates are calculated:

    http://blog.fellstat.com/?p=440

To me this basically reads that both the Pfizer/BNT and Moderna vaccines are roughly in the same ballpark of efficacy (~95%-ish).

He'll be asked about HSE's planned rollout today by a journalist and he'll no doubt quickly change the subject

What we're forgetting in all of this great news is the high likelihood of the HSE making an absolute balls of this

    It's what they do
