Out of interest only, why did the Joe McDonagh Cup get higher status than Christy Ring. In terms of status, I would have thought that there would be no-one greater than Christy Ring, so why was McDonagh not put in as a lower tier cup?

Because league positions are not based on who you think is the best hurler. Sure there is no Mackey cup in the tiers and wasn't he the 2nd best

Don't think that's how it works;how many All Irelands did Liam MacCarthy win?

On the topic of the Christy Ring though, it looks like Kildare may finally get their chance to make a step up to Joe McDonagh level. They've been victims over the last few years of the inconsistent promotion/relegation policies of the GAA; Meath won the CR in 2016 and 2019, getting automatic promotion each time. Kildare meanwhile won the CR in 2014 and 2018, yet both times they were faced with a playoff which they lost. In fact no team has won a promotion/relegation playoff in the history of the CR.

Now Kildare face Roscommon in the SF, and would be favourites to advance to the final where both teams are promoted.

Not sure how well Kildare would do in the Joe McDonagh initially, granted they beat Kerry in the 2014 CR final but Kerry have moved up a right few gears since then and hockeyed Kildare the last time they met.

But Kildare have the population and resources and if they could survive a few years up there could most definitely do well.

I thought it was 1 up with no one coming down from JMcD this year. That's what it says on Wikipedia at least

They’d be destroyed in it next year but it’s all about progress and every year up a level helps in getting to that level.

Both Leinster and the J McD are being expanded to 6 teams next year, so they'll need to take 2 teams to bring the J McD up to 6.

In fairness, we in Meath have not done well at J McD level either. I was lamenting in the Meath thread a week or 2 ago that while we seem to have mastered the CR, but since beating Kerry in 2017 we've played about 20 games against J McD teams and lost every single one. That said Westmeath seem in disarray this year so we could have a chance of a long overdue win.

If Kildare do come up they'd only need to beat us to survive. While we've been a step above Kildare the last few years, it's not beyond them to beat us.

2 up. One JMcD team goes up to Leinster which leaves 4 in the JMcD. It is expanding to 6 teams so both CR finalists will go up. Each tier will have 6 teams like the League.

Big game in the Joe McDonagh cup today.

    Antrim v Kerry in Belfast

Place in the final up for grabs if Kerry win it.

Who will the pay in the final

As things stand, Kerry had 4 points, Antrim and Carlow were on 3, so even, as seems inevitable early on, that Kerry lose, they can still make the final by beating Carlow:

Offaly were 2 down with 3 mins to go.
Level now in injury time of extra time.

    And now gone to penalties

    That’s absolutely disgraceful from Offaly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 258 ✭✭paul0103

Down win the shootout 3-2 to make it to the final with Kildare. Kildare and Down both promoted to Joe McDonagh for next year, Offaly will play Christy Ring again

  • Registered Users Posts: 258 ✭✭paul0103

And it seems the Down keeper is the hero!

Donegal vs Mayo final in the Nicky Rackard

Kildare into the Christy Ring final

We await penalties in the other CR semi final , not good for the heart for Offaly and Down supporters

    How about credit to Down

The reality of the championship system of promotion and relegation means every team find its own level.

    This is currently Offaly's level.

    Up Down !!

Fair play. Down keeper makes 3 penalty saves.

Exactly. To be falling to that level to be playing the likes of Down in the first place is terrible. You’ve basically agreed with me.

Fair play to down. Very disappointing for Offaly though. Great for Kildare and Down to step up next year to the Joe Macdonagh.

"We should change the rules so Offaly can be in the Liam McCarthy" Haha remember that nonsense

Great result for Down but Offaly jesus christ what has happened. They should be winning this no problem

Can't believe they were Playing us three years ago in Portlaoise. Now it seems like a lifetime ago.

The signs were there for years. As soon as a proper tiered structure came in they were gonna fall hard but the blinkers were on cause they won the AI 30 years ago and couldnt see they were falling behind Carlow, Laois and others who were putting the work in

No you seem to believe that Offaly have a god given right to be playing at a higher level they don't, this is their level and they have to earn the right to play at a higher level.

You obviously have some bone with Offaly but they have fallen and it’s extremely poor from them to be anywhere near playing Down, let alone losing to them.
