For your family, perhaps, for others it will be different. Some people have already come home for the Christmas period as they can work remotely. One of my own children arrived home recently and will be returning after Christmas.

For people like your family member who can work remotely and is flexible as to when they can travel, then its great. I think the government are afraid of people arriving in their droves from the UK and the US. It would certainly undo any of the effort that has been made in Ireland to contain the spread of the virus.

We are in a good place now compared to the rest of Europe and the UK, so I think Leo Varadkar made the right call on asking people to refrain from coming home.

Our biggest problem at the minute is the 6 counties.

I think so. Better to say it now. It doesn't make much difference though as they will only advise and everyone will come back anyway. The attitude seems to be to just ignore it

Seems to be rising back up. Going to be a very hard winter in Northern Ireland .

His guesstimate he said, though he then referenced vulnerable groups being before that.

I think what we're seeing is what many expected, vulnerable groups beginning Q1 2021 along with healthcare staff then work your way through the priority lists Q2, your looking at Q3 then probably for everyone else

And for us too, the border counties will be pissing in the wind trying to control numbers if its on fire the other side.

Martin was talking about different rules for Christmas week

That means level three stay within your county from the 1st to to the 21st

Only 20 more days of staying withing your county not seeing friends family, partners

That will mean the best part of 11 weeks stay within your county

    Longer for Dublin and Donegal

Brilliant reward for those who are and have done everything right

Does it really matter what they say? Travel is not being enforced. 90% will take no heed to restrictions and do what they like. Its been a long hard year, people are going to see their families whatever.

Did they ever bring in fines for leaving your county or did they quietly scrap that?

It does to many people yes but I know what you're saying

Some will not break the rules

My aunt in Dublin won't have seen her 92 year old mother for over three months if you tack on the extra 20 days

    Shambolic from the government

Surely she can visit her on compassionate grounds.

And that's not to mind the months earlier this year. It really is a nonsensical rule.

Tony Holohan has gone beyond parody now

He will be telling kids their parents are Santa Claus on the 6 one soon

    He definitely enjoys the power.

For the US there will be no problem if they are citizens or have a green card.

Probably a lot who won't have either tbf. People on different visas and students etc.

Not sure is it open to all of them to return if needed or not.

If they are illegal it was never open for them to come home and return. Nothing has changed in that regard.

Dr. Fauci says it appears Covid strain from Danish mink farms won’t be a problem for vaccines

Their testing numbers are so painfully low that the positivity rates are going to be all over the place.

    He definitely enjoys the power.

A public servant with no accountability to the social and economic consequences, to his income or pension. Basically no downside to a ‘Zero-Covid’ strategy. Remember he called for mandatory quarantine earlier this year.

How can we be 8 months into a pandemic in this country and people are still beating this drum.

Do you understand the Tony Holohan is not the NPHET? Do you understand what the purpose of the NPHET is?

I understand people want someone to blame, trust me I get that more than words can say but you're fishing in the wrong pond. The National Public Health Emergency Team is made up of Irelands foremost experts in their respective fields and the National Leads from the health service but it appears people are still under the illusion he stands around a bubbling cauldron in the center of Miesian Plaza maniacally shouting orders and everyone falls into line.

Where did you get the 21st from? I'm in Dublin and was hoping to get back once restrictions ended but if people want Christmas so much, would think they'd go along with it? Because I think some people want to be opened up for whole month which doesn't seem like it will be on the cards realistically.

Well the 21st is the Monday before Christmas. If Martin says different rules for the week of Christmas that is what he means.

He hasn't ruled anything out though, and the WHO have said they're a long, long way from deciding on the implications of the strain. More investigation needed!

He's not the only person saying it. The Danes say vaccines are effective against it.

Slight increase in postive swabs today.

    523 from 11,610, 4.5%

Community referrals still lower than last week. It'll be interesting to see what counties report higher numbers today, 3 hospitals could be causing issues here along with border counties. We'll see with the county data probably.

However, he said specific restrictions may be in place for Christmas week.

He said: "The fact that we're doing well gives us greater flexibility in the month of December and beyond. It is not just about Christmas.

"Originally when we went into Level 5, I did signal Level 3 as a target for 1 December.

"There may be a staged approach after 1 December. The exit plan is still being worked on across Government.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/1113/1177879-coronavirus-ireland/

    Christmas week is the 21st

That would mean level three up until then

Realistically the best we can hope for is level three up to the 14th then travel eased until the new year
