I bet Tony & Co already know what their recommendations will be

Well they sounded relatively optimistic tonight but need the data for next 2 weeks. Plus issue of anticipatory behaviour and all that.

We need to recognise the rather unique situation Donegal is in. It’s quite different from the other border counties as it’s quite literally bordering the 4th largest city on the island after Dublin, Belfast and Cork. It’s a very significant urban area and East Donegal is intrinsically linked to it and is remote from anywhere else.

That’s quite different to any of the other border counties, which are not really connected to major urban centres.

Donegal to Derry city’s relationship is a bit like West Cork to Cork City.

It’s going to take some serious coordination and sensible policies in Northern Ireland, but in their absence, Donegal is just going to keep becoming infected, so I suspect the only solution is going to be a extra measures in Donegal until we’ve vaccines.

Could one expect any less from scaremonger HQ. Deliberately brought out to defuse optimism, even a blind man would find the ruse transparent. And a simple solution for me there is immediately switching from RTE to the Masters golf. Voila, no more McDonkey courting the limelight.

We need a proper quarantine system. What we have is people coming home and staying with families. That's not quarantine in any real way.

People can come home and follow the rules under the EU traffic light system but let's be honest it's high risk for this country.

A lot of people from my home village are abroad and of the ones I know that's further away than the uk/eu, there's no one coming home.

Agree its risky but saying that even if people follow the guidelines that they should not travel is a bit dogmatic tbh

Next year will be fabulous when we have a vaccine and we will look forward to that .
My parents in law lived through a dreadful war and five years of hell so I think we can manage this

I hope all this messing around by Tony and Mehole doesn't prevent people from coming home and spending Christmas with their families.

People have sacrificed enough at this stage, lost time spent with loved ones cannot be replaced. C'mon away home I say.

Agreed. If we could close the border and get away with it we would. It would be a political hot potato of the worse degree.

It's safer for people to come home from most European countries rather than crossing the border to the North at the moment.

Paul Cullen's articles in the Times are always quite fair and balanced, but he always comes across as a passive aggressive inquisitor in these briefings.

I think that's why he comes across as he does, he specialises in reporting on health rather than more general journalists tbh

Either way, there can be no planning anymore, cos you don't know what country will be green/amber/red/whatever ahead of time.

Plus the cost of PCR ... ~ €150 per person, good luck with a family of 4.

Nah, it's done, I'll be lucky to get home in the next decade, allready accepted the fact ill never see my parents again and won't be able to go to their funerals.

All for a virus with an IFR of ~ 0.2% ...

    NUTS!

0.1185% of the population of Belgium have already died

Paul Cullen, from The Irish Times, was following on from Tony's earlier responses about the danger of international travel and contrasting that with his apparent reluctance to say much about the risks posed by people travelling from Northern Ireland.

"You don't have a bad word to say about Belfast, but you'll everywhere else..."

Tony got a bit testy. For a bit.

He's definitely more on top of the brief and asked more informed and pointed questions, but he has this manner of asking questions which is always advisarial, like he wants people to trip up on purpose and he always - always - trails off and leaves the end of his question hanging - hence why I think he comes across as passive aggressive.

I actually think its a complete personality clash between himself and Tony, he was much more cordial with Roland Glynn and even Professor Nolan this evening when he asked him how he could be confident level five was needed

Look at the difference in how Nolan responded compared to Tony, he acknowledged it was a reasonable question and gave some detail

Soon as Paul asked the Finland question, Tony got mad and responded angeily
