I read on the RTE site that Anthony Staines and Tomas Ryan are saying that we will be in and out of lockdown until the end of 2021 at least. They are part of a group called Independent Scientific Advisory Group who want to eliminate Covid.

While I understand that the Pfizer or indeed any vaccine would not be a magic bullet, surely yesterday's good news would be encouraging. Encouraging enough that we could look in to the future without such a projection? Or as they are medical experts is it likely they are correct?

I heard, but I heard all the same, that next summer, we might, (might) have to produce we got vaccinated. That's from my mates in the airline ind.. pilots etc..
There's already talk about it to free up the skies apparently. Neutral point

    I read it!

What part are you implying that I missed?

It says Ireland would likely recieve 2 million doses based on population size, not that we would revive any more than anyone else in Europe? It also says only part of this would be delivered this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,547 ✭✭✭Widdensushi

Restrictions being lifted in the north, really pointless keeping them here when there are no restrictions on travel and thousands of people travelling back and forth daily, there will probably be a spike in people going north for weekend breaks etc.

I would have thought that that volume was a little excessive for a population our size? Surely this is over saturation?

Without doing genomic sequencing of the infecting virus, it is impossible to claim that cases identified in schools were caught in the community, rather than in the school.

Large superspreading clusters elsewhere show how easily schools can spread the virus.

    Melbourne

    Israel

What is this nonsensical post trying to say?

Schools aren't a problem. No matter how much you want them to be.

2 millions doses is 1 million recipients I believe. Each person would get 2 doses on 2 different dates.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Why think that? It's actually below a pro rata distribution on pure population size.

No surprise Toby has it, the White House staff have been riddled with it.

Surprised to see so many anti vaxxers on boards.ie lately!

The thing about anti vaxxers is that they object to having a regulatory approved vaccine, yet many wouldn’t hesitate to snort a dodgy line off a toilet or swallow pills they bought at some festival.

    So do they really matter?

    Seems straight forward.
Ireland 'set to receive two million doses' of Pfizer vaccine if approval gets thumbs up

What's to be read in to that?

The article is clear too and it's always recommended to read mire than a headline.

When we reckon the vaccine will be here?

When we reckon the vaccine will be here?

    After its approved.

Realistically late December or early January in small numbers (280k doses) more later.

When we reckon the vaccine will be here?

    Christmas Day.

Take it after the prawn cocktail but before the turkey/ham.

BEFORE THE MAIN COURSE OR YOU WILL BE IN SIDE EFFECT CITY

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

It was relatively high sample size and will be monitored after for any potential side effects. Think FDA asks for at least 2 months of data, wouldn't be approved by them or EMEA if any concerns over safety. Say by time it's available to people outside risk groups, lot more people will have taken it and lot of time passed to assess also.

Well, they want to extend the restrictions, but DUP says no. As usual, they're not getting anything done up there.

Lifting restrictions before things are under control sounds like a worst of both worlds -scenario to me, getting the negative effects of restrictions without the benefits.

With less community transmission and less transmission amongst the population in general it's less likely to make it into the schools.

I was been sarcastic at said poster who was called out a few days ago on some of the contradictory posts he made about schools and had disappeared since.

It seems we can't win according to this research on (non-pharmaceutical interventions)NPIs, i.e. masks and distancing, which may make outbreaks of other diseases more likely.
These actions also have greatly reduced incidence of many other diseases, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Current reductions in these common respiratory infections, however, may merely postpone the incidence of future outbreaks

Would it be possible that NPHET are waiting for more info on the Oxford vaccine as it doesn't have to be refrigerated? Or is that a ridiculous thought?

in general across all the vaccine candidates they will really look at the short term safety profile of the vaccines...however one thing that we just won't know and will have to accept won't be available for a few years is long term data - both in terms of long term safety profile of the drugs and long term efficacy data of the drugs...

that's the trade off for returning back to something close to normal

Why does it seem like Covid has peaked in Europe?

It was 2 weeks from disaster 10 days ago

They introduced lockdown but that would be too soon to have an effect

Honestly Belgium, etc was supposedly on fire 2 weeks ago

    Cases are dropping

Where's the school thread gone that was active every minute 3 weeks ago?

Perhaps everyone has already had it once.

Could be about to burn itself out, and we can all pile into Croke park to see Mayo hearts break in December.

Maybe Christmas isn’t cancelled after all

These things peak naturally, it's why they're called "waves" :)

It's basically a big pyramid scheme. Eventually the virus runs out of hosts and cases begin to decline.

This is either because it's run rampant or because people are modifying their own behaviour to reduce contact with others.

The only thing we can influence is how high the peak is. Like you say, many countries in Europe have been on fire for the last 2-3 weeks.

People will naturally modify their own behaviour when they see how bad it is, but it's also not correct to say that Europe only started doing anything about it recently. They have been incrementally introducing restrictions over the past six weeks.

Given the 2-4 week lag between hospitalisations and deaths, it's going to be a grim start to December for many countries.
