Not to put a damper on anything, but I wonder will this news, and hopefully more to follow in the coming weeks, make people a little more accepting of a potential upping of restrictions post Christmas ? ie knowing there's a light at the end of the tunnel ?

Has it been explained yet what ‘90% effective’ means?
Does it mean that it only works for 90% of those who are vaccinated or does it mean the the effects of the disease are reduced by 90% in all of those who are vaccinated and get Covid?

What % of people are having mild or asymptomatic symptoms anyway. I'd like to dig deeper of what 90% effective means too.

Stock markets are reaching all time highs after Biden's win and now this. Nikkei just surged to a 29 year high.
    Good times ahead, thank God.

    Yes.
Good feeling about the turn in the news this last week alright !
Our ever reducing numbers here , Biden / Harris beating the tweeting orangutan, Boris attending Brexit talks with a new incentive now that he has lost his Bud in the Whitehouse , and now this !
    All great news ;)

It means that of those in the trial that developed the disease 90% were in the placebo group.

The western world now has a vaccine folks
Sorry to rain on the parade.

With 94 catching it out of 43,000, 90% of that group got a placebo. 8 people who received the vaccine still got covid. Possibly during a time when huge restrictions of movement are in place. That doesn't fill me with confidence.

Moreover they'll only have 3.5bn vaccines ready to go by the end of next year. Not even enough for a quarter of the world's population to get the requisite two doses.

The vaccine is not the panacea it's heralded as.

The vaccine has 90% efficacy in a trial of 94 people. That means in spite of receiving the vaccine (or placebo) 7ish people still got covid. Possibly during a time when huge restrictions of movement are in place. That doesn't fill me with confidence.

Nope... some of the 94 would have been given the placebo...

until we see exactly how they have classified the primary end point and the placebo split of the 94 candidates we don't know exactly how many people in either cohert got Covid...

hopefully that data comes out relatively quickly..

If 90% of people are immune then it will not be as common in the community so spread will be limited, I have only ever seen negative comments from you so not surprised to see you attempt to "rain on the parade"

What? There were 94 infactions in a test of 43,538 people.

Except when it comes to scientific trials, vaccines never achieve 100% clinical success, so today's result is as perfect as possible, practically speaking.

    Incorrect. From The Guardian:
The phase 3 trials have involved more than 43,000 people and are intended to establish whether the vaccine works. Volunteers are given either the Covid vaccine, which was administered in two shots about three weeks apart, or a placebo alternative such as the meningitis vaccine, and neither they nor their doctors know which they have had.

The interim analysis looks at how many of those who got infected with Covid-19 had had the new vaccine and how many had the placebo. So far, 94 people have become infected with Covid-19 – this is three times more than the company originally planned, but since the analysis shows that 90% had not received the vaccine, it implies that no more than eight people had received it.

Yes. 94 infections. Probably in half that amount because one half receives a placebo.

Just goes to show how little of the placebo group got it. What kind of trial has this little exposure to the pathogen being combated?

Are you aware of the other two vaccine candidates in phase 3 trials? Oxford and Moderna. If they are anywhere near as effective as Pfizer we will likely have another few hundred million (maybe billion) doses of vaccine next year.

It’s certainly good news for Pfizer’s share price.
I just saw an interview on CNN with the Pfizer CEO. He just got the news from their scientists yesterday and he has not actually seen the data for himself yet. He was also asked what 90% means and he just waffled on but didn’t answer the question.

If only a small number of the people in the placebo group got it, why are you so worried about the virus in the first place? You really do seem to want it both (miserable) ways.
