    Pfizer VP Paul Duffy told
    @VirginMediaNews
last week the company already had plans to manufacture 100m of these vaccines this year, and 1.3 billion by the end of 2021

1.3 billion doses treats 650mln people as it’s a double dose.

    Still great news.

Must be good if RTE are sending out the breaking news notification! They better have George Lee on the 6.1.

Will take years to vaccinate everyone then

Yes. But first world countries will get early access.

Plus maybe other vaccine may come along like the Oxford one.

If the peer review of this does indeed come back at 90% then the whole 'waiting for second generation' of vaccines might be thrown out.

Imagine the US gets first pick and they are 300m so 600m vaccines.
Don’t want to dampen this but they need to severely ramp up production to have any impact

Pretty sure I replied to this a good while ago when you also said it.

No they don't get first pick, production ramped up a long time ago.

Supplies for USA manufactured there, European supplies to be manufactured in Germany and Belgium.

They have already signed contracts with multiple governments with delivery schedules. Production sites in Germany & Belgium will assist EU.

If you read the press release, it sounds like they potentially would have had results a few weeks ago but decided to wait until there were more results.

"After discussion with the FDA, the companies recently elected to drop the 32-case interim analysis and conduct the first interim analysis at a minimum of 62 cases. "

Going to be an interesting phone call from the White House to the head of the FDA (who is salvaging their reputation).

Truth is, according to this doctor, that no vaccine is near, that no data is available on Phase 3 of studies, so there is no official and sure rollout date yet.
His words were that it is possible that something might be available late April, and anyway no end of pandemic is possible before beginning 2023.
    Those were his words.

His words didn't age well thankfully!

Even so 1.3bn vaccines equals 650million people. That’s only 10% of the world’s population.
Or can they licence the recipe out to other producers to further ramp up supply?

Yeah, just thinking of how this will fuel rabid theories of the whole thing being a hoax to oust him.

Virgin media also had it as a Breaking News item this morning.

Read the first line of that and actually welled up!
“Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19,” said Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer Chairman and CEO.

I know caution is needed but **** me but what a christmas present that would be!!

Yeah, except "you'll never work in this town again" doesn't quiet cut it, when it is coming from a lame duck.

Even if they did decide to wait for extra data for political reasons, who could blame then for not giving that science denying fúck a bail out.

Pfizer share price up more than 14% in pre market trading. I'm not sure of the significance of pre market but if it is significant and if you subscribe to the idea that the market is wise, efficient and rational then.... :D

Surely with 90% efficacy there should be zero excuse for restrictions on social distancing, masks, large gatherings etc not to be dropped (gradually of course)?

You would hope. It really is fantastic news.

On here, at least, it's immoral to talk of death, but for those 9 that didn't receive protection from the vaccine, are we saying that's ok now?

Love the damper in the last paragraph. The "for nothing" hyperbole, because you can't update an existing vaccine you have to start from scratch again.

Yes, because if 90% of the pop. is immune then the virus dies out and most of these 9% never come into cantact with the virus.

Is it looking like it gives Sterlising immunity?

Waiting for Hmmzis analysis if this develoment

I know nothing about vaccines but since most people pick up and spread this disease asymptomatically, Will that still be happening after a vaccine, will it just stop people getting sick or will it actually stop the virus circulating?

I'm cautiously happy with this news, cautiously because the HSE are a national embarresment

    Probable rollout for Ireland timeline?

    2021

    Q1 - Frontline workers
    Q2 - Over 70s
Q3 - Those with serious underlying symptoms
    Q4 - Everyone else

Plus we only need a 50/60% uptake on it don't we?

Would hope a little quicker than Q3 for at risk groups

Er, no. Immunity is not sterilisation. If it was then there would be no flu, right?

If the HSE & Dept of health haven't got some sort of plan in place then heads should roll. They'll need defence forces logistics to give them help with it probably

I stupidly just read the article and comments in The Journal!

    'Keep it'
'Who's going to be the Guiney pigs?'
    'The sheep will take it'
'So if we vaccinated all over Ireland only 490,000 people would get Covid/'

The same ones protesting about restrictions will be protesting about this next!
