Good progress seen again this week.

1,440 less cases than last week. In hospital 283 (42 less than this time last week)

Support for Bolsanaro has dropped by 10-15% in major Brazilian cities since early Autumn due to his poor handling of the epidemic in the country which has claimed at least 160,000 lives. Good to see, with Trump out now it would be good to get some of the rest of the trash out to ring in the new year but sadly they've another two years of Bolsanaro

Be interesting now with the schools back open over the next four weeks.

I presume people will just blame the weather or something and believe everything they read.

Weakness? You could argue that both ways, weak to "#staythecourse" (to where?) or weakness on those not comfortable with the mortality and morbidity.

The route out of a pandemic is either medical intervention or the amount of death a society can stomach (socially, economically, etc), seemingly many Italians have decided they are comfortable with the mortality. There is no right or wrong answer.

That’s not really what’s happening though. It’s not a sober calculation of how much mortality society can stomach (though experts and governments will no doubt be making such considerations behind closed doors), but rather those who oppose restrictions are a mixture of denialism, a lack of basic understanding of mathematics and what continued exponential growth would look like without all the restrictions, and lots of selfish individuals calculating that my freedom is more important than other people’s lives, because the assumption is always that it’ll be other people who suffer.

You're assuming everyone is ignorant of risks and dangers, I dont think that's realistic, covid19 and its effect have been relentlessly discussed in the media and among friends and family since it started. I also dont think it can be described as selfish, im not sure I've heard any arguments with "i" being the main factor in the wish for removal of restrictions. In fact, the same can be said of those pursuing lockdowns, it can be described as a wish to save themselves or close friends and family from getting sick, at the expense of everyone else.

Which people are not believing that schools are a vector? We all know it is, surely? But as a society weve decided, given almost 0 effect of the virus on under 24s, that this is the route we want to take.

    tbh I don't.

also having the kids miss more school possibly a ruined year will have the state or education system playing catch up for years even decades or delaying starting of school for a year - some be 20 doing the LC then for decades...can't have that..that would be a nuclear option.

Keeping schools going has been one thing they did right

The EU handling of the crisis is way worse than USA or Brazil.

a relative has tested positive and is now in isolation. All the close contacts were tested and while awaiting the results were told they could still go out for a walk etc..

Seems madness to me from entire cost of the restrictions on society and the economy that people awaiting results don't have to quarantine for the 24h or so it takes. You'd assume close contacts would have a heightened probability of being infected.

Seems insane given the cost of covid to the economy and society.

yes, correct. But some people are playing this glib/sarcastic 'oh it's not the schools' comments, we knowwww transmission will happen in school, it's eye-bleedingly obvious. As a society, we have made that decision, and in my opinion, and seemingly that of the govt and NPHET, the correct one.

160,000 out of a population of 207 million doesn't sound that bad, especially considering how densely populated their large cities are and the extreme levels of poverty in a lot of areas.

My wife talks to her family in Brazil almost daily and there's barely a mention of Covid now. The country is opened up and people are getting on with their lives it would seem.

Oh believe me, if you are under 24 with an underlying issue, the effect is not 0. There are lots of vulnerable young adults/kids who will be very sick if they get it.

Schools have been open since September, the data is there for all to see, it's nothing like your hypothetical.

Edit; and furthermore, covid19 has been here since march, and the data also reflects that point. Also, influenza is a bigger danger to that age bracket.

This is an interesting site. It shows the Trolley waiting numbers/times

I picked a date towards end of November. Lot of red.

    http://137.191.241.85/ed/ED.php?EDDATE=29%2F11%2F2019
    Acute Hospitals Today - 373 with (210 over 9hrs)
Acute Hospitals Same Day Last Year - 212 with (92 over 9hrs)
This represents a 75.94% increase in trolley waiters versus last year

    Last weekend data:
    http://137.191.241.85/ed/ED.php?EDDATE=07%2F11%2F2020

Lots of green with very low numbers.

Trolley crisis solved or problems kicked down the road?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Oh it has definitely been here since March. My daughter was in hospital in early March, She was 12 & must have got it in school. She has a rare genetic disorder.

Interestingly enough though she has not been sick since& normally each year she would pick up everything & be out of school for months at a time. The new hygiene practices seem to have helped with this!

Mix of can-kicking and many of those who might be needing trolleys have passed away.

Dr Gabrial Scally on Claire Byrne again,

Is this not a piss take at this stage? He is basically on every day and gets to spout one sided horse****e.

    It is despicable.

Very few have died realistically, compared to other countries...we are "only" about 900-1000 excess deaths ahead of last year, dont mean that in a bad way.

I'd imagine its more can kicking than those who need trollies passing away

It's called balance and he's got a lot of credibility for the cervical smear inquiry. He's on one path here though - Zero COVID.

Now UK not allowing even hauliers in from Denmark who are not resident in UK. The actions being taken are belying that this is nothing to worry about.
Freight drivers who have recently travelled through Denmark and who are not residents of the UK will be refused entry to Britain, under rules which came into force on Sunday morning.

Having read up on it, personally it seems like overkill, the 12 cluster 5 cases which were the issue were reported in September and none since. I get that the UK and others want to act quickly here but it doesn't to me seem to be a proportionate response at all. The Dutch reported mink cases long before Denmark for example. There doesn't seem to be an issue with mink mutation in general just the cases that were reported as "cluster 5"

The whole area around mink farming is contentious and it looks like the Danes wanted rid long before now, looks like this gave them the ammunition. Anyway thats for a different thread so I won't diverge here.

Lots of investigation still needed here in general.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,757 ✭✭✭✭ACitizenErased

The media reporting on the mink story is ridiculous. There hasn’t been any reported cases of that mutation since September.

I'm curious too. I mean, our level 5 loving government must be roaring ahead in the polls, so let's focus on other country's Covid approaches we don't agree with.

    https://www.statista.com/statistics/525353/sweden-number-of-deaths/

Sweden's total deaths for 2020 are completely normal so far, unless there is a massive spike in mortality in November and December Sweden will see less deaths in 2020 than many of the other years of the last decade.
I am actually stunned, 6000 confirmed deaths one of the highest in the world and no effect on annual mortality. For me this has completely changed my perspective on everything about this
