You can almost see the grim reaper floating along whilst sharpening his scythe beside these reprehensible joggers... And they are so smug about it as they leave a trail of potentially deadly bio-hazardous aerosols in their wake. Huffing and puffing, mouths open like jackdaws on a hot day. I think we need jogging zones for these types, put them in the empty car parks around non-essential retail.

I nominate Paddygreen to be the new Vincent Price horror pandemic voice-over for the movies. :)

Good thread explaining R number by Dr Phil. Basically we can only estimate R for today in 7 to 14 days.

    1/10.

PG is a spoof account satirising 'covid hysteria'. That sort of post is typical of his schtick I'm afraid.

I have been fine tuning the temple recently with kung fu, table tennis and stuff like that. Best shape of my life bro. And I achieved it in a 8x6 shed. Nothing is impossible.

I think PG adds that bit of much needed humour to the whole thing, don't get me wrong I find the information posted by others very good too.

I’m off to light a few incense cones guys. Sensing a lot of bad vibes coming my way off the joggers in here.

Reading the attempts at satire is even more tiring. The novelty wore off long ago. He needs some new material.

Odd thread. I don't think it's appropriate that Dr Nolan gets involved in politics. But, more importantly, his thread actually means Mr McNamara may well be right that the R was below 1 at the time Dr Nolan says it was 1.3 -1.4 (for the very reason that Dr Nolan explains... I.e. the R estimate is based on historical data, and is not a current estimate)

Just watching the GAA here on tv. And they are after doing the ‘water break’

How is this stopping the spread of COVID versus the old way of water carriers.

I find Paddy amusing and in fairness he is inoffensive.
Simple solution for those that dislike his posts ignore or just scroll on by.

Yeah, obviously had to defend NPHET's work there. Could say the same with Michael McNamara getting involved in science.
It's like the behaviours adopted when level 5 floated had no effect? Even before level 5 a huge amount of people stepped up their vigilance. It's great that we are in a better position now. Maybe level 4 would have worked but the trends in Europe are quite stark.

Oh, I think level 5 is the right place to be right now and I hope it drives cases numbers down to a good low level.

Mr McNamara is no scientist and I disagree with what he is saying nearly all the time. But Dr Nolan's thread is poor and I'd prefer more honesty i.e. it's possible we got it wrong and level 3 was going to stabilise case numbers. We need complete honesty from NPHET, it's ok to make mistakes as long as you can learn from them.

Hi. Will we likely go from L5 to e.g. L3 before we go to a lower level instead of going straight to L1 from L4/5? Thanks.

Almost certainly. Possibly to a L3 Lite if things are going really well by the start of December

I don't envisage a scenario in which NPHET will ever recommend a level less than level 4 w/o a vaccine or significant therapeutic.

If that is the case, society will start to do it themselves or put too much pressure on the govt. to resist. If no treatments or prevention are available by end of Q1 2021, society will end the restrictions themsleves, and the job will then be to procure and manage more capacity for the HSE.

He is very defensive. Twitter is not a good forum for that. Far better to have a blog post on a website which is sanity checked

Some of Italy's hospitals overwhelmed. I'm grateful we avoided this fate again. Acting early and forcefully was the way to go. We always have an element who don't follow any guidance or rule. The are the same type of people who don't pick up their dog **** and let kids walk in it.

Global coronavirus cases exceed 50 million after 30-day spike
October was the worst month for the pandemic so far, with the United States becoming the first country to report more than 100,000 daily cases. A surge in Europe contributed to the rise.

The latest seven-day average shows global daily infections are rising by more than 540,000.

More than 1.25 million people have died from the respiratory disease that emerged in China late last year.

The pandemic’s recent acceleration has been ferocious. It took 32 days for the number of cases to rise from 30 million to 40 million. It took just 21 days to add another 10 million.

Europe, with about 12 million cases, is the worst-affected region, overtaking Latin America. Europe accounts for 24% of COVID-19 deaths.

More sad milestones as the pandemic accelerates.

In H. G. Wells science fiction novel ‘ The War of the Worlds’ invading Martians are eventually "slain, after all man's devices had failed, by the humblest things that God, in his wisdom, has put upon this earth": microbes.

Trump's assault on science, decency, truth, democracy and on the planet's future was been halted in large part by his mishandling of the pandemic. It’s a great day when one of the three virus ridden right wing populist stooges (Trump, Johnson and Bolsonaro) is on the way out.

Their toxic masculinity, blather, bluster, bull$hit and arrogant self-confidence have been revealed for what they are, by miniscule packages of encapsulated RNA with the ability to infect human cells and replicate.

The populists disparagement of science has led directly to their botched attempts and gross incompetence in managing the pandemic, and will hopefully banish the remaining two stooges to the dustbin of history.
