I got myself a load of 200ml glass bottles from Amazon the other day. I'm decanting an open bottle into them and finishing the rest out of it. Have way too many open bottles at the moment. Trying to get them down to maybe 8 core bottles and the rest samples.

With proper storage, is there really an open bottle problem at all?

Speaking of which, do any of you use argon/preservation gases? Do you find a big dfference. I do tend to use it after a bottle is about a quarter of the way down. but i've been finding more hard to source recently.

The virtual tastings and miniature sets such as Midleton, Knappogue, Cooley, Teeling etc are a great way to sample a variety without creating the open bottle problem.

Think I'll get that midleton 4 pack pot still. Do a bit of a world cup. Semi finals, third place playoff

I want to buy a couple of those Middleton samplers. What would be the best/cheapest place to buy. I know Amazon is a no no.
    Thanks in advance

Think someone saw it on sale here 2 or 3 days ago. I've only seen it in supervalu for 35 euro

Just read on the booze deals thread that Powers 3 Swallow is currently €30 in Tesco (as is Jameson Black Barrell!!), outrageous value!

Also, you can currently get Yellow Spot on O'Briens online for €70, which also seems to be a very good price at the moment.

Dunnes I think... set up a chain of vouchers as you buy them.

It's 30.51 in Dunnes at the moment. Loads of them about. I picked one up the other evening.

Just popped into Tesco Ballyfermot there and they were cleared out of Black Barrel. Grabbed a Roe & Co for 35 instead. The deals at the moment are outrageous. And I'll be picking up a Kilbeggan 8yo on Sunday. A very whiskey week.

Is the kilbeggan 8 year old good value at that price ?
    Cheers

Space is my problem with open bottles: At the moment there is a Midleton Very Rare, a Black Barrel, a Bush 10 year and a 16 year (apart from the run-of-the-mill Black Bush) and a delicious Jameson 18 year old.

If I enjoy them I don't want to polish them them off - because then I wouldn't be able to go back to them - I'm not not good at goodbyes.

If I don't like one it'll end up as hot whiskey or Irish Coffee, There was an awful Pearse Lyons which would not measure up for that role role so I polished it off just to get rid of it.

Just to be fashionable I'm now having issues with open bottles of gin - I'm still learning about them.

However no matter which one I'm on it's no more than one or two of an evening.

Yes, but it's end of the line so maybe not great if you develop a taste for it :(
The Puca is supposed to be good value at €24 (?) also.

But when Powers 3 Swallow is 30 euros in Tesco there's an opportunity cost there!

This x 100. I've got a quarter bottle of lagavulin 16 and ardbeg 10 left and I'm torn between drinking them and saving them for comparison. I'm particularly curious how talisker 10 stands up to lagavulin

That's why I got the empty 200ml bottles. You can squirrel away enough for 4-5 drams and you can finish the rest of the bottle off.

Funny that you should post this today. A band I like based in Kentucky is doing a live stream gig to get some money for their crew workers and I bought a bottle of JD to watch it with since it's their drink of choice when they play. Looking forward to it.

Trying some Teeling Pineapple Rum Cask tonight. Not sure what to think of it. Fruit and rum on the nose. Very oily and clingy in the mouth. Bit of honey and pepper. Dry spice and medium finish. Don't dislike it but not sure I'd want a bottle. Unusual.

Another bottle kill tonight. This time it's the Glendalough Mizunara finish. Really enjoyed this one.

    That is a lovely display.

    ---

Having Roe + Co tonight after Tesco ruined my plan to grab some Black Barrel. It really matches all the comments on here thus far. Definitely going in to regular rotation now.

I think it's great at the 30-35 price point. The whiskey you want to dislike but just can't, its a good drop.

That's exactly what it is and how I described it to herself. Perfect for what it is.

And I'm glad I got it, I hadn't realised my Black Bush had run so low. College work is a lot easier when you have a dram on the go.

I use a pour and sip subscription and this month's package included a cask stregnth sample. I've never sampled cask stregnth before so I presume it needs watering down.

How does one water it down? Do you just add a drop of two of water or a good dash? Any advice would be much appreciated because I don't want to ruin the opportunity

Always a drop at a time to taste. You can't take it back out but you can alway add more.

Thank you for the reply. Do you use tap water or bottled water? Obviously I presume there's a big variation in the tap water condition so don't want to ensure there's a negative impact on the whiskey
