I tried the Jamesons Black Barrel last night. Meh. OK but I was a little underwhelmed.

    Oak devil is nice

Dead rabbit more like bourbon and made for the American market

I have enough whiskey to do me for the next five years anyway so not too bad if I miss out! Speaking of which I finished off a bottle of Caskmates Stout tonight. When I first got the bottle I wasn't too fussed with it but I revisited it recently and really enjoyed it. I'll get another bottle one day.

I only emailed at 1751. In hindsight I should have said something when I was in there yesterday evening and fluttered my eyelashes.

Have bought a few pricy Kavalans for big family occasions the last few years. Exceptional stuff.

Some of the Swedish stuff is meant to be wonderful.

Bottle kill 2 of the night. Sainsburys taste the difference 12 year old Islay single malt. Long discontinued. Got this from the father in law who had it unopened in his cupboard since 2013. Rumours this was either 12 year old Lagavulin or Caol Ila. Lovely sweet peatness to it. Sad to see this one go.

Sound. The Caskmates Stout is a grower alright. Wouldnt stand out at a mass tasting but over the course of a bottle you appreciate it.

I had similar experience with Lambay small batch... if it was a bottle of wine I would have said it opened up with air / time.

I joined this thread 4 days ago. Definitely not good for me. On my own I've managed to get myself to 11 open bottles. I think I have a follow through problem

The virtual tastings and miniature sets such as Midleton, Knappogue, Cooley, Teeling etc are a great way to sample a variety without creating the open bottle problem.

Not for me. I usually buy a bottle or two after the tasting. Sometimes during the tasting!

With proper storage, is there really an open bottle problem at all?

Is that the Single Pot Still Whiskies one with the Redbreast 12, Green Spot, Powers John's Lane (46%) and Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy in it?

In my case, Yes!! I admire those who can manage their consumption. I have a compulsion to finish bottles. For this reason, while I follow this and other whiskey related sites ( and collect whiskey and whiskey related material), I drink very little uisce beatha....I am safer with beer!

There's no such thing as an open bottle problem. I have a closed bottle problem.

I find control is tempered by cost and willingness to savour. :)

Crap whiskey is generally undrinkable so you wouldn't have it. Good whiskey is too good to savour that it's criminal to guzzle it down.

I find it handy enough. And I'm not a man for moderation by any means.

The worst is an empty bottle problem.

I think every I have is currently open. 8 whiskeys, 2 Gins, a few random liquers and far far too much wine for the size of my apartment.

I lived in a relatively small apartment for years and kept my whiskey where I had most space - in a wardrobe, so out of sight.

I recently moved house and had an ideal space to build a bar with display shelves to which I've added lighting. Now my whiskey is in the open and I'm much more inclined to sample it regularly. I consider this s good thing as it'll mean more turnover.

Whiskey not really an issue. I've space in the kitchen
But wine is more fickle that whiskey. Kitchen isn't great place to keep it with temperature changes.
But you tend to have a lot more bottles of wine stored. As some of it needs to age, where all whiskey is ready to go. Plus you tend to consume bottles of wine rather than glasses.

Aye but where I live space is at a premium, to find somewhere there's no chance of them being knocked over... and there's the wine collection to fit in too :)
