Where to go next...... I'm currently on my second GTI,a Mk7 , having previously owned a Mk6 before it. It's a 142 model with extras and now I'm hoping to change in the next few months. I'm not sure what to get though. I cannot afford a brand new GTI so was thinking of coming up to maybe 172/181 if my budget could stretch. I always try to find low mileage examples so I can feel like it's somehow "new" to me. Recently though I've been thinking of the current Honda civic s design 180 bhp. It's loaded with tech and crucially has a larger boot which is something I've been kinda hankering for. What do you think? Am I mad to ditch the extra horses and good name of the GTI for a new civic? Or am I just showing my age now (43)?!! Anyone here driven the 180 bhp civic?

If your not bothered to drop 50bhp to get a bigger boot I’d say a new GTI would be a waste of time.

You might find the Civic a very different animal after being in GTI’s

If you’d consider importing, would something like this be a better halfway house - think it has a detuned version of the engine in your current car Leon FR 2.0 TSI 190bhp

Thanks for the replies folks. I've no interest really in importing. I'll be straight up trading in to a main dealer here. I absolutely love the GTI , it's power and relative everyday practicality. I suppose I'm coming from the point of view that my budget (including trade in) is around the 30000 mark. At a push I could get to 32000 which puts me in the market for a new civic s design. I'm afraid that after a period of owning the civic, id just get bored of it, which is something that never happens when you have a GTI in the driveway. I've also thought about an A5 but it's hard to find a petrol one with low mileage and s line spec 190bhp.
Reading back what I've just wrote I think I might have answered my own question.... The GTI is too hard to ignore.

I drove a 180bhp civic, mate of mine has one. They are a nice car to drive and as you say full of tech. They also feel faster than the 180bhp suggests. I'm still on the fence looks wise though, sometimes I think they look great but a lot of the time they are just awkward looking. I think with a proper set of wheels and maybe some subtle wheel spacers would make all the difference. I don't know if they are as nimble as a GTi though

An S3 Sportback sounds like it would fit your criteria, not sure if you would get a new enough one for 32 though.

That M4 grill looks actually worse than the OEM one imo. It looks like something you would pick up from aliexpress.

Doesn't say much when they can only use computer generations instead of even one real life version to show what it looks like.

Thats what id expect to pay a dealer, maybe. That car privately? 5-6k if even in my opinion...

Just for context, I was selling an 06 e60 in 2018 and I could only get 2 grand for it. Granted it was on the old cc system and was 1080 to tax but I remember a 520d 08 model at the time was making about 5 to 6k on the cheaper tax model. I don't think a 10 year old 530d has much of a premium over a 520d so I'd agree with your 5 to 6k there. Maybe at the lower end for an SE maybe higher end for m sport.

Just watched the octavia review Mark.
A really good straight review. You are definitely turning into Ireland’s answer to Mat Watson.
The octavia looks like a great car and way ahead of a golf. They haven’t cheaped out on it like the mark 8 golf. Skoda products seem to be becoming more desirable than VW these days.

one of biggest pet peave about car reviews a mention of "cheap tax" like it matters v the depreciation many of these cars take, which funnily enough, never warrants a mention, when finances are being brought into the equation by the person doing the review...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,529 ✭✭✭MarkN

I think a mention of the word depreciation would negate the whole idea of doing a video that says hey, you should consider this car :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Most people accept depreciation as a fact of life when it comes to car ownership and don't think about it obsessively every day, they only have to worry about it when they go to sell/trade the car. With more and more people availing of financial products like PCP the depreciation is built into their payments from day 1 and the gmfv.

Bazz I reckon the vast majority of buyers, do not have a clue about the level of depreciation they are letting themselves in for, more likely with "higher end" cars, that are priced far cheaper in uk and then flood the market here a short while later. Sure many of us on this forum, used to it for years, still cant sometimes believe the rate of it! An example would be something like "the newer model motor tax drops from E280 to E270" this is actually the kind of stuff I have read in reviews!

100% Bazz. Typical buyer, 3 year cycle, back into dealership, what’s the cost of change or more often, is the monthly up or down and go again and literally that is all they care about. Of course we can as car fans judge that method but it’s how the general public buy cars these days and will only become more relevant as ownership evolves over the next decade in my opinion.

The kids and teens growing up today want a mobile provider that costs €7.99 per month, Spotify is €10, Netflix €11.99 and they can be dropped at the push of the submit button. They will want to purchase car usage in a similar way as it is all they know. The bigger picture of €30,000 on a Golf will be irrelevant.

In fairness, it's mentioned as it's what the public want to hear.

"Ah nice car there John, great colour. What's the tax like on her?"

Local land rover salesman told me how a customer traded in a fresh range rover for a brand new because the tax was a few hundred less. The new car was 110k I think...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The main reason for new cars being more expensive here is because of our taxes. Pre tax prices of new cars in Ireland are some of the cheapest in Europe. They depreciate heavily because they have to compete with cheaper UK ones that didn't have such high new taxes on the prices when new.

Nail on the head there Mark. We seem to have moved to manage all expenditure by the month for everything model now rather than what it actually costs in total. The Americans have been living this way for decades. I'm not a fan of that myself because as you say, the true cost gets pushed aside so you don't know if your overpaying or not.

Presumably engine options in the new Octavia range will expand going forward ......... currently the 2.0 diesel is only 115bhp or something & the 1.5TSi isn't an option as far as I could see.

Looks a nice bus though to be fair, 110bhp 1.0 TSi for €24k in basic spec doesn't look out of the way for a family car for folk not bothered about spec.

in fairness he is an idiot, creating a video to broadcast the fact seems weird :P given the leasing deals in the uk to get caught like that is borderline criminally negligent.

Mental interest rate when you see so many zero percent interest deals over here. Hardly an accurate reflection?
