At least two of the recent deaths took place in ICU. Recorded as such in the last 24 hours in HSE operations report last night. Patients brought to ICU especially those with Covid have a reasonable life expectancy ahead or they would not be admitted there in the first place.

So what's the incentive for people if the government are saying it will be level 3 for Christmas?

That means no visitors to your home, no hospitality venues open, no travel outside your county

I can only hope it is positing the worst case scenario, so that when restrictions are lifted somewhat to even being able to see some of our families, it will be yippee :P

However I am so confused at all the level's restrictions, I am probably making an ass out of myself, with due respect to donkeys.

To all the people who are advocating the closure of schools then what. Where are they to go who will look after them. Have you ever had children at home when you are trying to work. When do you allow them back

This absolutely should not be a consideration about keeping schools open. Kids getting an education is 100% the right thing to do but only if it's safe. The figures and experts say it is relatively speaking. I have my doubts on that but the next few weeks will probably give us some insight into the effect schools are having on the numbers.

And before anyone asks, I have two small kids who were a nightmare when WFH last time. The little sh!ts figured out quickly that the best time to pester me for something was when I was going on an important call because I couldn't say no.

What I really don't like lately is the refusal to call out numbers

Last time we got % that was community spread was last Monday week when it was about 22% - nothing since then that I recall

No breakdown on ages by range of deaths either or Icu numbers, unless I'm missing smoething

Two things that concern me about the effectiveness of this lockdown:

    1. Complacency. Spring was a different time. There was an apprehension, streets were empty. I see more risk taking now.

    2. Seasonality. I'm uncertain about the effects of this, but there has been recent research on how temperature impacts on the virus. Not sure if this translates to greater spread.

I think we will see reduced transmission, but not to the same extent as the previous lockdown. Hope I'm wrong!

I genuinely cannot see the government/NPHET advocating a move to anything lower.

They appear to be aspiring to level 3

Veradkar and Martin have both come out with opinions on this
Martin - we hope to go to level 3 in December

Veradkar - unlikely pubs and restaurants will open again this year

Donohoe - unlikely pubs and restaurants will reopen again this year

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-40067942.html

Well what I hope is it will start Level 3 but then drop down to 2.

I know more then likely not but I am true with all this doom and gloom and looking forward. Looking forward to next year and been able to see my nephew. Looking forward to been able to go on a holiday. Looking forward to been able to get back in the office (that will go after 2 minutes back) Looking forward to meet people. Looking forward to mingling together.

ENOUGH WITH THE DOOM AND GLOOM TIME TO LOOK FORWARD TO THIS BEEN OVER SOON

Well one thing is for certain.

THEY CANNOT OPEN THE PUBS BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

People would go mad with christmas and just being out of lockdown.

I would say the pubs can't open at all until next year. If then even!

Its interesting ...people are having very emotional reactions to this.

People have a reaction to something they like not being available for the rest of the year. I do not compute. I believe humans call these things emotions.

Every single piece of data points to schools not being a big driver of infection rates.

And every single piece of data conversely points to highest deaths in old, obese and sick people. There could be 30 asymptomatic students in one room and we only have some idea when one becomes a bit sick. Then close contacts are in the firing line WHEN the hse get back to the school. The offending student is taken out but unlike the government promise, theres no pods so the other students party on through the community or school. Without mass testing in schools we will never know really.

Seven students positive and 45 close contacts. The school has been forced to reopen.

Richard Prendiville is a man I'd be proud to work for.
Interesting statistic in graphic in that article.

Proportion of Covid cases in school aged children before schools reopened 14.3%

Proportion of Covid cases in school aged children after schools opened 14.1%

With regards to community transmission levels, I think its because the contact tracing system has broken down so much that they honestly just don't know.

A friend of mine was told that she was a close contact by a family member. She was only tested yesterday after 8 days. I think they're really struggling.

    Why specifically dutch patients?

Germany also spared capacity for French,Spanish and Italian covid patients back in April as well. Putting all of Europe's healthcare to shame!

Plus we’re sending our swabs to Germany. The stereotype about German efficiency exists for a reason!

A friend of mine got tested on Thursday afternoon and got the result this afternoon. He was a close contact.. Negative thankfully.

The test cycle used to be approx 24 hours. Why is it taking so long now???

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Haven't got much time for restrictions after, 3 weeks from midnight on 2nd Dec brings us in to Christmas Eve. At least if we'd done it 2 weeks earlier it might have given more room to bring it down. I'd say no matter what the restrictions are NPHET and government will know many people will still see family and friends during it.

There might be different turnaround times for close contacts as will have to self isolate for 14 days regardless of test result. I got negative result within 22 hours so seems to vary a lot.

More information on validation studies of antigen testing as reported on RTE:

'A detailed health technology analysis on forms of rapid testing is being undertaken by HIQA, with the findings due to be published by the end of the week, according to the Chief Medical Officer.

Asked about rapid antigen testing, Dr Tony Holohan said validation studies are happening in certain settings and said it's vital to know what it's effectiveness is in the field compared to our Irish gold standard.

At least two validation studies are under way at the moment, he said.

However, he said that the antigen test could not be seen as some sort of magical shield.'

Also found an interesting article on antigen testing v PCR testing for those who want to read more about it in Nature.

'If you’re at risk of transmitting the virus to somebody else, you’re going to have plenty of viral particles — those would certainly show up in antigen tests,” says Michael Mina, an infectious-disease immunologist at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, who has been a vocal proponent of antigen tests.

There are challenges at the start of the infection, when people have low levels of the virus. The answer, says Mina, is frequent testing — done multiple times per week. This could quickly identify infected people, even if the assays are less sensitive than a PCR-based test, because the amount of virus in their noses and throats rises within hours, he says.'

Is lockdown coming in tonight at midnight 00:00 Wedneday morning or have we another 24+hrs left? They made a fair disaster of the timing, could they not have said it comes into effect from 00:01 or 3am etc?

If they take their previous approach they may go to level 3 on Dec. 1

Then it's a minimum of three weeks before they change, which would be Dec. 22

    Not a hope imo

I know. Am trying to uplift myself somewhat. We shall see I suppose.

I'd hope that my OHs son might be able to visit us over Christmas
