No cabinet meeting this weekend, next cabinet meeting already pre scheduled for early next week.

All pointing towards a rejection of NPHET again

It's appalling. Surely ignoring NPHET again would giving a certain part of the population/covid deniers/guideline ignores to continue on the path that they are on and not make any changes and adapt to the guidelines and therefore increasing the cases and putting us further into a more vulnerable position for the Christmas with more cases and more sickness and hospitalisations and deaths.

We need to get our daily cases down and we need to do it now, it's out of control. We also need to recruit more public health consultants, we need more and we need them now. Once we bring our cases down, we should then roll out rapid testing and backward tracing. We also need to bring in isolation enforcement, particularly for those who have being traced to clusters. Then we can have an exit strategy. If we fail to do this, we will continue to fail until a vaccine is ready. We cannot afford this. The model works, Japan did it, South Korea and we can do it, once the population buys in and our government promises to deliver. That's your exit strategy , can we do it?

We need to start with substantial enough fines to ensure compliance, not all this advisory bullshít, every man and his dog knows the advice is just that and they can do what they like, mask wearing aside. Then again, how may people have been fined for not wearing a mask in a shop, from what I have seen it must be almost none. Employers must be forced to let those who can work from home do so, far too many companies are not abiding by this, and substantial fines should be levied for not complying. Unless the rules are followed we will not get on top of this Virus.

    Mix of things incoming.

You can be sure economy and jobs are probably the main talking point, as bad as that sounds. Note, takes account of NPHET advice, essentially we're listening but we'll do something else

Not sure what they can close, but let's see

I read yesterday there is no epidemiologist on the Nphet committee is that true does anyone know?
A huge number of them have a background in epidemiology. It's not in their titles, which I think confused the particular poster who claimed that.

NPHET were looking for level 5 2 weeks ago..I am sure house visits would have been banned with this .
Also , nobody was ever advised to use visors . Some people decided that for themselves as a way to get around wearing a mask .

Well HSE website says visors are ok. Their website is a joke. They recognise the dangers of a mask with those valves but don't recognize the danger with visors.

A lot of people thought that a visor gave them more protection than a mask as it covered the eyes.

It’s an interesting article - what’s worrying for me is that a member of NPHET tweets it out now rather than implementing it as policy... NPHET consists of mainly HSE and DoH leaders... they have huge remit on test and trace but where is the strategy beyond lockdown....

It can't be policy until the cases are reduced to manageable level. However NPHET/ Cillian should say this is the strategy, I think if they said this was way forward, then people would be willing to accept additional restrictions.

Yes 30something athletes are what we should all aspire to match when we get covid 19.
Some posts here are so bovine it's hard to know if they're intended to be read 'straight'.

That is indeed interesting. Unfortunately de Gascun (a real scientist and the only virologist on NPHET) was slapped down by Holohan. I was much happier seeing de Gascun leading NPHET.

If the Gardaí currently have no power to enforce the restrictions (can’t break up house parties, can’t send people home if outside their country - can only “advise”), what’s to stop retailers defying the restrictions in Level 4/5 and opening up if they’re not deemed essential retail? If I had spent hundreds/thousands on ensuring I complied with
COVID safety measures and knew my area of retail wasn’t adding to the spread, I would open up and see what happens.

Can you elaborate on background? There is not one epidemiologist or immunologist on NPHET. Take Cillian de Gascun out and you could have rounded NPHET up in the HSE/DoH canteens.

Mother has just tested positive now. Leads me to believe that I have actually been re-infected. Bit of a balls.

if you have no symptoms you haven't been infected, chances are they picked up your mothers virus when she passed onto you but your immunity prevented a re-infection

We don’t deserve a good health service. People do take take personal responsibility for their health. Eating processed rubbish and it’s someone else’s fault if they develop health problems

In fact it is people being too healthy and living too long which is crippling the health and social care services. The Department of Health even tell you as much in straight language when they say each year that health costs are increasing due to the increase in the population of those who are very aged. Somebody living on 40 Benson and a half pound of lard a day will likely exit stage left at 60. The more you age the more health complications you collect and the more the health, pension and nursing home costs inflate. Of course we should be encouraging people to live as long as possible and celebrating it but it is not cost free, in fact the opposite. If you wanted to lower health costs you would be handing out free cigarettes to kids outside the school gates.

Yes house visits wouldn’t happen in Level 5 but when they didn’t get Level 5 why did nobody take action on just house visits as apparently they had the data to show house visits were an issue.

I’ve seen people wearing visors for months, they needed to be told not to sooner. The nurses were wearing them in Holles St. presumably thinking they offered adequate protection.

I just find it frustrating overall that we are now at Level 4/5 when existing restrictions aren’t enforced. The Guards haven’t been given teeth to enforce restrictions.

With the possibility of re-infections, it's far too early to be saying something like this and talking about immunity.

If they have no symptoms, they could be asymptomatic.

There would also be the fact that the health industry is big business ..it's not just out of the goodness of their hearts that governments all around the world invest so much money into health (and that so much of it disappears into thin air and offshore bank accounts) ...but that's a topic for a different thread really
