We were told earlier this week that the vast majority of transmission is now occurring in the private home setting. The Government immediately implemented a restriction on all household visits. We need to give this time to be effective.

A smart, nuanced approach to suppression is now required in order to balance lives and livelihoods. I'll hazard a guess the government will not implement the full Implementation of Level 5 per the 'Living with Covid' plan but will likely add additional restrictions or put a timeframe on when improvements need to be seen in order not to increase restrictions further.

If only we had a 32 man panel set up to give us advice, maybe one that could give us choices or alternatives to the harshest lockdown in Europe.

    alternatives like what?

Hospital numbers rising but not out of control.

246 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 30 are in ICU.

Cuz there's no plan, apart from let's pretend there's no virus and shield the vulnerable and that part of the plan doesn't work even with restrictions. So no plan.

NPHETS plan isn't much different apart form you would need to add in destroy the economy as well, seeing as they don't have an exit strategy (i know - no one does !)

but destroying the economy shouldn't be the starting point

From talking (online) to friends etc it seems most people are going to ignore this restriction on homes. Because they don't get the logic as long as the schools remain open. In a nutshell.

Dublin continuing to descend down the incidence per thousand table - now 14th I believe. Shows Level 3 can be effective (although not yet successful per say) and now hopefully the Household visiting restrictions will be the element which can keep the economy functioning.

1000 is a bit too neat, makes me wonder if it's the correct figure.

No plan is worth talking about in my opinion if it doesn't involve schools.

Personally I wouldn't shut down retail, its not driving spread from HPSC data anyway.

Schools should like NI have an extended midterm. I'd go as far as saying from Monday, then the week of midterm and the week after. 3 weeks, review then.

What else is there to close apart from retail ?

But anyway you failed to address a point, who are the let it rip merchants ? I see nobody on here saying to let it run wild
You've clearly not being paying attention so. There are several "let it rip, it's up to the vulnerable to isolate themselves" right here on this thread.

    How exactly?
The per 100k rate hasn’t actually declined in Dublin?
    Just others have gotten worse

We've had months and months of "correct" looking random numbers.

Just because we happen to have a nice round number for the first time doesn't mean it's not accurate.

    You just notice it more.

NPHET delivers the direct approach, it allows for tweaks. That's not always a bad thing even if it looks made up.

Simple, bring your friends and family to the school if you want to have lunch together or a chat :D

    1000 is still very high

Good to see Cork back under a hundred cases

unlike yesterday swabs are more than cases

Can expect an even larger number tomorrow when the excess swabs filter through

I am reluctantly of the opinion that we need to do a lockdown now. However, we need to be given metrics as to how restrictions will be eased. Remember in June Tony Holohan was asked how low cases needed to be for restrictions to be eased and he said "as low as possible". That's not good enough this time.

Also there needs to be a plan to try and avoid another lockdown. There obviously can't be any guarantee that no further lockdowns will be needed but after the last lockdown they basically just downed tools and said "job done". One thing for sure is that if cases get down to a low level that shouldn't mean testing and tracing can be slowed. They need to keep it at current levels or beyond.

There is an alternative. That does involve restrictions.
Heres the way I would do it if I was in charge of advising the government.

    1. Open up the country.

2.Protect the most vulnerable in society-cocoon / isolate the vulnerable with supports in place for them ie food deliveries etc.

3.Enforce what we have instead of jumping from pillar to post and changing the rules when you(the government and nphet) feel like it. Its not helping the issue.

By enforce I mean make it a punishable offence for not wearing a mask / not sticking to the boundries of your local lockdown (see number 6) - mask wearing is the single most effective way to protect us all. -fine people that don't wear them when they are supposed to.

4.If you have a 5 point plan with properly defined procedures for dealing with the pandemic stick to it. Not have a 3.1 or 4.5 or any infinite number of decimal places between stages. Give each stage at least a defined time frame to see if it works.

    5. Stop scare mongering the population. Be honest. Stop basing the lockdowns etc on unreliable information.

    6. Use local lockdowns and not county wide or region wide. By this I mean if say Crumlin has the highest incidence of covid in Ireland - lock it down for 14 days and lock it down. None of this "its advice" and we have no way to enforce it. Theres no point in locking the back arse of Leitrim down when they have no cases and the city / town don the road is reporting huge numbers. Targeted lockdowns will halt the spread.

    7. Stop NPHET from releasing information to the public. All media announcements to come from senior government. And backed up with reliable information.
