Exactly. I would be on board with level 5 if it included the schools. A full whammy United approach for four or five weeks and then an easing into the weeks before Christmas. I’d also be on board if six weeks meant six weeks, but we know from past experience it does not when two weeks in March turned into four months.
I have no idea why The Government are ignoring the glaringly obvious elephant in the room and not addressing the school situation. The whole thing is a complete shambles.

It's not just the government, NPHET for some inexplicable reason are ignoring the school issue.

This crap about saving Christmas is academics treating people like toddlers. Promising something they cannot deliver is short termism in extreme. And we know that they did not want to give up on the last lockdown so no doubt the think is shut down now and hopefully be able next May.

You would think that the pandemic and all that has ensued would have led people to a place of knowing what’s important.

I’m not oblivious to the issues with the closure of schools but notwithstanding the meeting of families at Christmas, people need to accept that this year, at the very least, heavily commercialised holidays will be different but should be with a United goal in mind.

No, there’s no guarantees but isn’t it worth a try.

Full lock down now for 2->3 weeks and a planned full lock down for Jan 1->14/21 and another planned lockdown For April 1 -> 14.

We can all put it in the calendar and plan for it and then it will be summer.

You know what most of us would cope with that better because it would give us certainty in our lives.

Nah, they have a lot more things on the table than just the virus. Cool level heads and cautious hard thinking should prevail. Level 3 still has a week or so to go.

The issue I have with the restrictions is no end game tbh, I agree that some sort of plan is needed

What will level 5 mean for businesses, manufacturing, construction etc? They mention non essential retail tho tho the essential list is quite extensive.

    Exactly, some clear communication.

It’s going to have to be altered at times no doubt but it feels like being at sea in a storm on a dinghy with daily musings and blown out of proportion fear-mongering.

Posters who oppose L5 what do you propose as an alternative?

Use portion of the money saved by not going to L5 to increase hospital and ICU beds, similar to March with the private hospitals. Buy a private hospital even.

Then align our restrictions broadly with the rest of Europe. Current (L3) being the strictest basically

We had over 1200 cases yesterday and goodness know what it will be like today but the national average is appox 800 for the past 7 days. Tony said there's widespread community transmissions. Hospital admissions are up. Deaths are also up. The virus is reaching into more vulnerable parts too with more going into more nursing homes.

We have new restrictions on household visits to reduce the spread privately in homes. It makes sense. We are in a vulnerable position right now in Ireland. Yet there's playdates and sleepovers being planned. Isn't any wonder we are where we are.

Essential manufacturing will remain open. Can't speak for the rest as I'm not involved in those sectors.

Well the first Level 5 broadside did suggest that IF you want to save the schools do this.

No tomorrow is a meeting of party leaders and ministers for finance and public expenditure.

Government saying there is no timeline on a decision.

And its not like pubs / restaurants do a roaring trade in Jan... But the issue now is the indecisiveness IMO and the not being able to plan.

Alan Farrell is some spanner with that tweet. Id doubt the leak came from NPHET and if it did why wait till this afternoon. Hoolahan went out of his way to say nothing! At the very best he's just created more unneeded animosity between NPHET and the government. They need to be working together not creating a divide.

double bluff to blame the government :D

I don't think there's a list but I reckon level 4 is back to late April where we had hardware/gardening stores etc home, and level 5 is back to march/early April where we just have supermarkets, pet stores etc

NPHET should be disbanded. We need A full time dedicated team led by a Sec Gen feeding into the senior official group and the Taoiseach.

Maybe we could call it The Cabinet Sub-Committee on Covid-19.

Nope, it was a question directed at a poster here who has a thing about the dress sense of young women/girls.

You'd swear the country was open. We're practically at level 4 already, a day's delay before level 5 is going to make **** all difference. We're already heavily restricted and are yet to see the outcome of the most recent (household visiting ban).

Not at all, but every country is having the same problem and struggling to contain it, so why are we being so hard on ourselves is my point.

Because people are tired of it and somehow think there’s a way out in the short term in advance of a vaccine. As if a country the size of us and with our resources would be able to buck the trend and go against what almost every sane government the world over is doing, but there ya go.
