My 86 year old grandmother just rang me there, completely freaking out about level 5.

This post says it all. The older people are more afraid of a lockdown than covid.

I do think NHPET need a few fresh faces with new ideas.

We know what their opinion is and that's not gonna change.

Surely other opinions and new ideas shouldn't be dismissed?

This virus is new were told so maybe new approaches are needed as the situation evolves.

Close the schools in Nov,Dec and Jan.

    Keep them open in June,July,August.

Summer holidays cut to two weeks in Sep.

    Job done.
Don't know how workable it is, but it's this sort of big picture thinking we need. Unfortunately I'm not sure an unwieldy coalition government is capable of making decisions like this.

Just had a thought that if Covid is at least partly a seasonal thing i.e. peaks in Winter. Would it make sense to have the long school holiday say November to February.

Edit: Apologies missed the original post which brought up this idea!

Maybe we should appoint some boards posters to NPHET? :pac:

    Hmmm...

Not sure posting worldometer updates 15 times a day would be too helpful in the current crisis :D

When you think of how a large committee is structured, the ideas that are adopted are going to be a compromise of some sort.

Unless a charismatic individual or faction on the committee can sway large numbers to their way of thinking.

Exactly, repeated calls for a lockdown is damaging to society. There are other approaches. Thankfully deaths are remaining low so far in this wave & long may that continue. Other countries in Europe are in level 3, but with fines and penalties for rule breaking. This is what we need, hit the pockets of people not following level 3. It is completely unfair on businesses to have to close after investing so much into reopening under the new rules. Children also need to be educated and their future outcomes protected. If everyone followed the household/social bubble ban, and level 3 properly - it would have an affect without crucifying the economy & the well being of the Irish people.

I was talking to an elderly woman today, in her 80s, who told me she's had enough of the lockdowns. A lot of people will see level 5 as being optional. If you want to lock yourself in your house, fair enough. But most people will just get on with their lives.

thats all very well, but how can anybody get on with their lives when everything is closed??? no shops, no restaurants, no pub, no schools, no money, it will be a half life, unless all these 'get on with your lives' people get with the program and start abiding with the restrictions in place now, we will never see the end of it...

The unions will never buy it.
The kids and the rest of us in lockdown more or less, Nov-Feb.
Dark months, nothing to do, nowhere to go

The seasonality IMO manifests because it's airborne, in the last 6 weeks it's gotten colder, less outdoor activity, more closed windows in houses.

The only thing that makes sense is it might improve delivery of education, but the obstacles and cons are many.

Why are we beating ourselves up so much over the rising cases. Every country in Europe is seeing the same resurgence..

I hope so but I shan't be holding my breath

I doubt it. There are people still going to the boiler house (promiscuous sauna) in Dublin.

    The mind boggles.

You'll have people whinging on Joe Duffy about the or rights towards a summer holiday.

It is a good plan and I hope it happens and works too. It would be for the best. Close the schools for nov/Dec/Jan and have the schools back open again for the summer of next year with 2 weeks holidays in September. It is a good plan and hopefully it happens and works.

It's better to go early, you stand a chance of keeping other health services open then. Don't know if our government realise that.

Personally I don't agree with shutting retail like before, not a huge risk environment once people aren't hanging about for hours and distancing/hygiene measures are adhered to.

Level 5 with schools fully open.
    Marvelous!

Fast forward six weeks with case numbers even higher :
"Oh, it was the schools after all.
    Someone should have told us".

    Stupidity.

It's painfully obvious this is going to happen either leading to a pointless lockdown or an extended lockdown where schools actually close sometime next month.

It'll also lead to far less buy in from the public who understandably won't be able to understand why they're isolating themselves at home with a child in the house who's mingling with someone from 25 other households in a confined space without masks.

Government really needs to get this right and climb down from their ridiculous insistence that schools are safe or it'll ruin any chance of level 5 being successful.
