Exactly. I wouldn't say lock them up that's a bridge too far. Massive fines and or reduction of welfare benefits for those not caring about peoples health or indeed business's going bust. Heard of 2 more separate people let go today. My own job is ar risk if this continues.

Why can't people just obey simple rules put in place

That’s the point exactly, there are no easy options. Western society is going to have to suck it up and “change” (for want of a better phrase) for a few more months. It’ll be done in either a semi planned (lockdowns) or totally unplanned (Let it rip and hospitals overwhelmed) way.

I think people think there is a solution to this. Believe me, I f**king hate this virus and I hate what it's done to our lives. It's affecting me the same as it's affecting everyone I speak to.

But it's a virus. Without a vaccine or the virus burning itself out, we have no way out. No exit strategy. We just have to muddle on.

As you say, the government have a choice. Either lockdown to save lives/public health and destroy our economy or open up and accept that people, the most vulnerable people mainly, will die. They are the options at both ends of the scale and they have to decide what the right balance is but some degree of death and economic ruin will result either way. There is no option open to them where we go back to normal life or eliminate the virus. It's frustrating and unprecedented for us but that's the reality.

Government have a decision to make now.
Either go with what Mehole said last night and wait until next Tuesday to see the full effect of level 3.
    Or take the Tony approach.

Well its quite clear listening to him that they've recommended an increase in restrictions again

Positive swabs should be greater than confirmed cases, based on that logic

Did you not say positive swabs include retests before?

George Lee wants them to lockdown the whole country forever

I have actually went this whole pandemic without listening to George Lee once. How I've achieved that I don't know.

If only the same could be said for Gerry Killeen and McConkey.

This. Unfortunately it now appears like the real decisions are out of the public's hands. The vast, vast majority of people are following the rules. Someone has to decide what way we're going, we're kinda stuck in the middle now.

You can bring in level 10 if ya want people won't follow it. We've all just had enough, government need new strategy.

The government didn't invent the coronavirus. People mixing is always going to lead to virus spread. What do you want them to do?

I'd be willing to side with increased restrictions if they said:

we're going into level 4/5 on X date.
We're coming out of level 4/5 no matter what X weeks later.
    And go with it.

We'll be put at level 5 soon for the sake of the economy. This half arsed approach is doing more harm than good. The money that would come in with a Christmas at level 2 will far exceed that at level 3,4 or 5. We need to take the hit now for the opportunity to have a normal few weeks in December. It might result in more restrictions come January but sure that month is dead anyway. The whole "but the economy.." arguement against lockdowns makes no sense right now as it's that hesitation that will end up crippling it.

Tonight, next week, next month, if we go into level 5,we're not coming out of it this side of Christmas.

And if you make half a million people unemployed in November, how are they going to spend money in December?

It wouldn't be normal life anyway, if it spreads without any control, there will be soon no healthcare at all..

Based on what I'm seeing on Twitter (i'm not watching the presser) it appears as if employers have completely scrapped the work from home idea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

For me the sense that many people are ignoring restrictions makes the whole thing feel worse.

If I can't visit one or two close friends in one of our homes and my neighbours are having a house party with 30 people it really feels bad.

    I rellly want improved enforcement.

Maybe if our TDs stuck by the rules themselves people would listen

What on Twitter that you have seen has somehow captured WFH approaches from employers across the country?

For the people wishing for level 5, it’s not going to happen because country can’t afford to fund it

Grand Canal and the ISFC is empty anyway, a ghost town most days.

Checkpoint plods would be better off asking what is the nature of your employers business and asking for contact details for the “ non essential but thinks they are” employers and following up with said employers. Course that also needs legislation, right???? That old chestnut.

We can improve enforcement for sure but if you're trying to police a population of 5m, it's just not possible to have anything near absolute enforcement. The Gardai have about 15,000 people I think. That's one guard to 333 people without even getting into the actual jobs these people do and the fact they don't work 24 hours a day.

I'm in cork and know of people are whos employers are making the employees come in and those roles can be done from home. Where I work, were all WFH bar a certain amount who have to go in some days to do things like server checks etc

Christmas is cancelled so, if that's the case. Without a lockdown we're stuck in this rotten limbo that will have nobody in the mood for Christmas but if we nip this now, we have a chance of a level 2 opening at Christmas.

A lockdown now will have a better impact than it did earlier in the year if followed, the virus was much more rampant then. The longer we leave it the more likely your scenario becomes.
