It says it all when you can sip a gin or vodka neat.

Hats off.Anything over 46% ,and I seem to need a fair drop of water to open her up a bit.( presumably whiskey is feminine?)

Well, I'm drinking Black Bush at present...

    ---

I know I went off the rails a few weeks back waxing lyrical, but it has again knocked it out of the park, especially when compared to the M&M's earlier.

It's definitely the best bang for buck when it comes to the standard ranges I think.

You'd be surprised how many gins are really lovely sipped neat. The problem is that people just don't go there.

That sliabh liag gin is fabulous. Like any strong spirit, it takes a drop of water very well.

I tried a barrel aged gin at a hotel up north. Was really impressed. Basically becoming a hybrid between whiskey and gin.
But in the same sitting also tried a cows whey gin that was perfect meat.

You'd also be surprised at how many Irish gins use that whey alcohol. I don't believe that it makes a blind bit of difference to the finished gin.

It’s made down your way right?
When you think about it, there’s no reason why it should. By the time it’s converted to alcohol, and distilled, it’s left behind any residual protein and fat.
Unless of course they actively trying to reference the origin with the botanicals - which those guys do a great job of doing imo.

Btw the way, the Barry’s Gin arrived and went down a treat with the missus :). A little too well as we had friends over the girls polished it off it one sitting.

Long time lurker on this thread, thanks to all for some excellent recommendations.

Currently really enjoying the Powers Three Swallows. Excellent pot still and through the O'Briens sale got it for 35 quid. Half the bottle gone since I got it in a very short space of time.

Friend got me a bottle of the Drumshanbo Pot Still also, lovely whiskey although a sharper initial taste that the Powers. More spice in the aftertaste also which is a real plus in my book

Recently was given a Tyrconnell 15 Madeira finish which I'm hoping to sample when I get through the Powers, I try not to have two many whiskeys open at once and I have an open Hibiki and Lagavulin 16 in addition to those mentioned (not a problem I swear:pac:) so holding off. Interested to here any experiences here.

I bought that Barry's Gin a few years ago for herself. Went down a treat as well. It's a gorgeous thing.

They posted yesterday about an online tasting event if you're interested.

I have completely lost track with Teeling.

Is the likes of Teeling Blackpitts still old Cooley whisky?

Distilled in Dublin and matured in Bourbon and Sauternes casks.

It was in that 5th year anniversary testing they did a few months back. It was probably my favourite of the bunch so I'll definitely be picking up a bottle at some stage.

There was an interesting article in the Sunday Times yesterday about just this point. There was a point that Irish Whiskey should be labelled in such a way that states if the core distilled product was distilled by another distillery and if so, state which one.

Its a good idea as there are a few whiskey brands that dont even have a distillery which are marketing whiskey as their own.

Two L Mulligan tastings coming up. €32 each or both for €54. On sale tonight at 7pm.

Spooky Halloween Tasting. Friday 30th October 7:30 p.m. via Zoom €32

It’s not long now until Halloween so we thought we would have a spooky themed whisky tasting. It won’t be trick or treating just all treats of the following whiskies-

    Auchentoshan Blood Oak
    The Gauldrons
Mortlach 12 year old – The Wee Witchie
Bowmore 10 year old Dark and Intense
    Wolfburn Movren
    Arran Machrie Moor

And because it's Halloween we will throw in a sample of Mozart Pumpkin Spice Liqueur.

Feel free to dress up, you might win some whiskey!

Bonfire Night Tasting. Friday 6th November 7:30 p.m. via Zoom €32

Whilst not generally enjoyed on these shores it is in Scotland and going by the last referendum there, 55% celebrate the fact that parliament wasn’t burnt down by Guy Fawkes whilst the other 45% celebrate the fact that he had a go!

The beginning of November always reminds us of good fireplace whiskies and we though that these 6 were perfect for a winters night. Whilst some are rich and peated some are spicy sherry bombs.

Dailuaine 16 year old sherry cask
    Aberlour A’Bunadh
Wemyss Malts Velvet Fig 25 year old
    Glenfiddich Fire and Cane
    Smokey Joe, Islay blended malt
    Glendronach Traditionally peated

For Amazon Prime Day, does anyone know whether there will be lightning deals on whiskey that aren't already showing up as being a “Prime Day Special”?

Some decent deals. Glengoyne 12 is 27 instead of 40. Black Barrel only 24!

I agree that those bottles are a steal at that price. Will think about purchasing both!

I’m actually looking for a more expensive bottle though and wondering if anyone has experience of these coming up as lightning deals.

Whisky of the Year 2021 Judging Set £24.95

This autumn, we're inviting our customers to choose our next Whisky of the Year. This judging pack includes a Perfect Measure sample of each of the six shortlisted whiskies – three of which have been picked by The Whisky Exchange co-founder Sukhinder Singh and our head buyer Dawn Davies, and three of which have been nominated by the public. All of the whiskies abide by the Whisky of the Year criteria: they must be regular releases, not cask strength, and must retail at below £65.

The samples in this judging pack are labelled A, B, C, D, E and F so as to be judged blind, and the pack contains a single-use code along with a URL at which you can register your vote. Any further uses of the code will simply supplant the previous vote registered with that code.

Laphraoig QC imo is superior to the L10. Although it is a NAS, it has a higher abv. There's less of the mineral taste of the 10 and something of a sweeter development and aftertaste. I love the L10 but the LQC would be my choice between the two, every time.

Dingle sherry cask tasting tonight. Six single malts at cask strength aged for almost seven years in Manzanilla, Fino, Amontillado, Palo Cortado, Oloroso & Pedro Ximenez. Should be a good one!

Looking forward to it. I've a backlog of tastings as times didn't suit me so I'll do this one live to start catching up. I wouldn't have such a backlog of course if you didn't keep posting details to test my feeble willpower!
