NPHET provides public health advice. They cant change the virus, or the rate of transmission.

Being ang9et at them is like being angry at a weather forecaster because they've told you it's going to rain.

They're shaping public policy and the country's response and they have failed miserably. They continually failed to hit their own testing and tracing targets, they failed to address capacity issues, they've been the laggards of Europe in terms of adopting scientific research and reopening strategies, and they've bombarded the public with mixed messages. They're making things up as they go along, group think galore, and they've blamed the public all the way along. rather than facing up to their own failings.

And the government tried to tell us that Tony Holohan's position was untenable! Good lord

Cervical Tony should have been sacked years ago.

They came up with this wishy washy levels approach but surely accompanying this approach should be some sort of threshold to move to a different level.

We are at uncontrolled community spread and this will only get worse and worse. What exactly is the government waiting for?

If they start Level 5ing shops and the remaining things open, there needs to be evidence.

All logic and reason points, and has always pointed, to schools. Unless the government can present evidence otherwise, the government leadership needs to be arrested for knowingly spreading the virus for deciding to open the schools. Every last piece of evidence regarding how the virus spreads points to schools being the culprit.

Regardless of what the government do or don't do, there need to be criminal consequences.

    1,012 cases huh.
Just go into level 4/5 lockdown already. It's rising too fast.

... And for those who don't want that lockdown? look there is gonna be one at some point. Wouldn't it be best to do it now for 3 or 6 weeks so things can be reopened for Christmas and certain people won't be alone for Christmas?

Level 5 lockdown. Gets the cases down and back open for Christmas.

I've have no problem with going into level 5 if needed.

But it sickens me that house parties,GAA gatherings, drunk students etc were not stopped from spreading the virus.

If we go to level 5 I want them to pass laws so the Gardai can stop it happening again when we drop back down to level 2 eventually.

Can you enlighten us on this evidence? If there truly was evidence that schools were causing uncontrollable spread they'd have been closed already.

I honestly think all these 'told you so' comments are disgusting. Acting as if everyone's playing some sort of game. This is far from a game.

It's not that much fun being proven wrong again and again and again I guess.

Does anyone have any insight into why the North has 'lost control'?

Their level of restrictions are too low. Something similar to level 2 everywhere with something similar to level 3 in their worst areas.

Low compliance (ulster says no) to restrictions and common sense too.

Even if level 3 stabilises like it looks like it has in Dublin. With no further growth, were now stabilising at 900ish cases a day. Considering there's likely to be more growth before we start stabilising, it's clear to me that something has to come on to actually reduce the rate as our hospitals will be fecked at this daily case load over a sustained period

A Stabilised infection rate does not guarantee stabilised hospital statistics. I don't know what the average hospital stay rate is but I imagine the critical patients bring it well over 14days, so you could have a sustained rate of infection the but hospital capacity will keep filling up.

It’s not NPHET spreading the virus

No he didn’t. Jesus Christ, does there always have to be a big winner and loser?

Leo articulated very well why we weren’t moving to level 5 last week. The measures the government has implemented also haven’t had a chance to work yet. Had they implemented level 5 on Tuesday, we’d still have had 1000 cases today.

I don't have a problem with the Government rejecting the Level 5 proposals, they are supposed to manage the wider concerns such as the economy and employment.

But when the Tanaiste goes on Monday night television on our national TV station and criticises NPHET in the fashion he did, it was foolish and idiotic.

Keep that behind closed doors. Leo should know this as a former doctor. And then you have that one Ciara Kelly howling like a banshee on the radio about restrictions, they should both be ashamed of themselves.

Put simply... All services have been open up there, cases have started to rise and the claim they were unable to do anything to control it (close pubs, restaurants etc..) because they have no money to do so.

They rejected NPHETs advice. They were getting criticised for it from some quarters all week for refusing it. They were obliged, for everyone’s sake, to come out and explain their decision making.

As Leo explained it, the government had every right to be pissed at NPHET.

Well the 1000 marker breached today, don't know what the next milestone marker after that is. Just about time they bought in fines, I could have handed out 20 today in the space of a 10 minute shop.

The virus spreads by close contact, especially in indoor places, especially by people from many different households. That is the #1 criteria for the virus spread. That is exactly what schools are. Next to no social distancing, kids on top of each other, going home to infect households, who then infect the rest of society. This is 100% the trajectory.

Schools have not been closed because the government is afraid of angry parents.
