That's new technology for you though.

There was only three different Gen 4 SSDs available that I could see when I bought my one. As more come to market we'll see prices drop though.

Sony have already said that the speed of the drives need to be at the same or similar level to the onboard SSD because the games need to run at a certain speed to grabbing a cheaper Gen 3 with a lower throughput might not be a good idea.

Genuinely curious to know what do you mean by the ps5 is gimped already?

It amazes me what people expect from a €399 plug and play console vs the latest high end PC.

I think he means that the size of the SSD is small to begin with but there will be even less usable space when the OS uses it's share.

Considering a 2TB nvme gen 4 is almost the price of the console itself I wouldn’t call the included storage gimped. For €399 the value is insane.

Ssd prices drop as time goes on. So I'm guessing in 12 months time those prices will have dropped substantially.

In my haste when ordering the PS5, I selected in-store collection rather than delivery (Smyths).

I see it as quite likely Smyths stores won't be allowed to open their doors on November 19th.

    hhhhhmmmmmmmmmm.

I wouldn't worry too much. They will either allow you to collect at the front door or they will just send a mail advising that they will now be delivered to you instead.

With NPHET and the government all talking about Christmas already and how it could be impacted there is no way a shop like this would be allowed to impacted by the potential next stage 4/5 rules.

Smyths were doing doorstep collections way back when in the lockdown. They might just need to do it again but coming up to Christmas it would be a friggin nightmare because some people cannot and will not use a website, prefer wandering the aisles with their trolley. I'm happy to hibernate for the winter myself with my PS5, online shop and avoid people altogether.

As crazy as it sounds, even if we do go into level 5, I can see them granting Smyths and the like essential status or something akin to it.

There is absolutely no way they completely shutter toy shops before Christmas.

There was supposedly talk of this at the last cabinet meeting

Toy shops will get an essential status for Christmas

My other issue is Smyths isn't in my county! its only a 20min drive, but it across the border...into Dublin.

My wife is a nurse so I might send her in to get it on th epretence she's an essential worker on the way to work!

I think I read on here that places like CEX were allowed to stay open during the first lockdown as they sell office equipment. Not sure if that’s true though...

Smyths Delivery and Click & Collect was unavailable for a few days earlier this week when there was a panic about it being closed.

So I’m not expecting my PS5 to arrive day one, that way I can only be pleasantly surprised

Nothing like a next gen console launch to put me into full materialistic consumerism mode, looking at/almost considering desk chairs, monitors and headphones that combine price totals to two weeks my salary :) madness

CEX were definitely closed during the first lockdown anyway.

Worst case scenario Smyths will deliver them on the 19th, I am not worried either way. Would just rather not be sat around waiting for it to arrive though.

    Yes and no.
You can trade in from the list against buying a ps5 game. But the credit you receive is 35euro, so it doesn't quite equate to being half price if your pre ordering one of the ps5 games at 80 euro, eg Demon Souls will cost you 45euro with one game traded in from the list, but Miles Morales will only cost 25euro

Interesting. So for each game on that list, we can get 35 euro credit. So if we trade in 2 games we can get 70 euro credit to use against any game?

Or they limit it to one trade-in against one purchase?

As far as I can see the government needs to have the country in a state to open for the 6 weeks leading up to xmas. If the numbers dropping is too low they will go to level 5. They need retail to be open otherwise there's massive amount of jobs and revenue lost.

I'm hearing rumblings of a lockdown coming at the end of October for a number of weeks which would tie in with the rumours of an extended midterm break. Hopefully, it's only for two weeks...

My pre order will be arriving in to Cork from smyths. Ordered for me by my brother but smyths won't allow address changes. I'm in Dublin anyone know any reliable courier services from Cork to dub. If I can't get down there due to restrictions.

I never thought about fitting it horizontally in the shelf of my tv unit. I wonder with the new coolant tech would that be a possibility or should it still be out in the open?

I was thinking the same, I'm on the lookout for a new TV Stand (For my new TV ready for PS5 :) ) and thought it had to be vertical only. But I think ill try it horizontally for a while and see how the fans hold up.

Once your TV unit is open at the front and back it will be fine. The airflow is front to back.

I'd be more cautious about putting a Series X into my TV unit than a PS5, because if you lay the Series X on it's side the airflow is going left to right.

The shelf has a circular opening for cables and is then like 6 inches from the wall. Dunno if that will suffice.

Yea I was thinking about this, I will get one eventually but I think I might put it in my unit with the top grill facing me.

I'm pretty sure you'd be ok with that, haven't tried myself tho tbh

I wouldn't put any console in a TV unit with closed back.

Anyone know where I could preorder one or if there will be a second round of pre orders - completely took my eye off the ball and assumed I’d walk into Smyths on launch day and get one - I guess the good value for what u get price is driving sales.
