Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Duckett's Grove.

Far more unique. There's a million and one Huntington Castles around the island.

    Hmmmm.

Gonna go for Huntington Castle here. Think it's just a little bit more impressive than Ducketts Grove.

I think Duckett's, for the folly of that tower.
Also, a ruin is cooler than somewhere that's clearly just a wedding venue

We have a draw! Now it's time for the tie-breaker as we go to the reasons provided.
    Duckett's Grove.

Far more unique. There's a million and one Huntington Castles around the island.

Perfectly good reasoning. 1-0 to Duckett's

Why are there WWI trenches in Cavan?

I like that! It gets my vote. Though the lake castle is cool and I reckon it'll get through.

I will also vote for Cloughoughter Castle.
Though the castle itself isn't spectacular, the whole setting is!

    Cloughoughter Castle.

One of the finest sights in Ireland. Home to a vast variety of wildlife including 3% of Europe's common swans.

Trenches are definitely cool though, never knew they were there.

Cavan County Museum World War 1 Trenches ; while usually I'd sooner do just about anything else than even step foot in Cavan, because Cavan is the absolute worst, I must concede that this is pretty cool

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

It's hard to argue with an aerial shot of a ruined castle on an island in a lake, isn't it?

    Cloughoughter Castle

Cloughoughter Castle - wow that's so different to anything else. The WW1 museum and the trenches has definitely nudged my interest to get off my ass and see some sights.

Agreed. That's what I'm hoping to get from this thread. The legendary crisps one made me try Chickatees (they're ****e!) and now I get to try out a WWI trench. Good stuff omack!

The great thing about Cavan attractions is they'll either be free or deserted ;)

The County Museum has a number of thematic areas to it... The outside has the trenches, but also a gpo building that you can walk through, there's a section on famous women... It's good. You've to walk around yourself, it's not very bling or flashy, but if you slow it right down and relax then it's an afternoon out.

Bunratty Castle is great - the mediaeval banquets in particular, though I've not been there - and the Ailwee Caves are very dark indeed (just like being blind I believe)

But I like scenery, so the Cliffs of Moher have to get my vote

Cliffs of Moher - Beautiful scenery

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Damn Clare is stacked, some solid places to choose from.

Tenpted to go for the Craggy Island Parochial House from Father Ted, but it probably doesn't deserve it given the competition its up against.

Aillwee Caves is my pick, because always thought caves were really really cool when I was a kid.

Craggy Island Parochial House for me.

A national treasure at this point.

Though tbh, any of the entries here would be fine representatives for Clare.

    *They all have lovely bottoms.

Aillwee Caves because its a cave that people may not be as familiar with as the cliffs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,438 ✭✭✭davetherave

Tough one this round. Would be happy with any of them to go forward except Fr Teds House.

The Caves and Bunratty Folk Park were a day out when we used to go down to my Grannys in Tipp as a young lad. Have to go with the Cliffs of Moher

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,511 ✭✭✭Purgative

Cliffs - they're all good but Cliffs really have something.

    The Burren a close second

Burren might have got more votes if used a photo of the Poulnabrone dolmen. But considering doolin cave or Craggaunowen arent even top 5 and all the other castles and sights tis fair enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Father Ted's might have gotten more if I used Bishop Brennan getting kicked up the arse. There's over 200 here, I have loads to get pics for :pac:
