What do people think are the chances of this going ahead with Coronavirus?

We will be in France a that time - I was wondering where would be the best place to purchase tickets for it?

You've probably already heard OP but if not, RG current postponed until September, but remains to be seen if that'll happen or not.

I think it will help Nadal slightly that there will still be 5,000 fans allowed in to Roland Garros.
I expect he will get more of that reduced support than any other player.
If things deteriorate in France and there are no spectators like the US Open, I think that will favour Thiem.

    Murray-Wawrinka first round, poor Andy!

  • Registered Users Posts: 695 ✭✭✭lostcat

Seriously good draw for Djokovic, conditions will be a bit of a leveller this year but no one should beat him before the final (line person throats excluded)....and I'd fancy him to do a number on rafa in a final thus year.

    Aye. Wawrinka totally steamrolled him.

They are all going to be playing in overcoats by next week (apart from Nadal who will go string vest...)
But seriousy, the long johns look stanger than the lack of a crowd at the moment....

Seems very low key so far. Mats doing his best to drum up some coverage by having a little go at Andy Murray which didn't go down that well.

Enjoying it well enough anyway, at least I can watch it on eurosport anyway which is a bonus. Serena v Pironkova has the makings of a good 2nd round battle i reckon.

Tsitsipas and Rublev both win from two sets down. I'm finding it a little bit of a tough watch with no crowds, so best the bigger names don't start bombing out early. Medvedev already gone.

That Errani-Bertens match was fairly tense stuff. Errani was gone before she could even acknowledge her opponent at the end. Post match comments will be interesting to hear.

Nole and Rafa are not winning this slam!!!

Just stuck €20 on Nadal @2.5 on bwin ... money in the bank, I usually don't bother betting on him in the French as odds are 1.00001 , but they are just throwing money away here, pity I don't have more cash to spare!!

The first half of this post is 100% true, and the second half is 100% false.

I’ll be happy if Halep can win the French Open again.
    Swiatek starting strong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Swiatek is just 19, she looks pretty decent. Halep gonna have to go 3 sets here i think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Halep simply blown away that first set, hugely impressive by the pole. Question is can she maintain that level and halep will likely improve. Fascinating contest.

Swiatek making it look like a training match here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,752 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

This 3rd game 2nd set is huge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Halep not playing badly, just being bossed. That will help her though, big hold.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,008 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

    Halep dismantled.

Was a stunning performance from Swiatek, such an impressive range of shot making. Some of her volleys were outrageous. Heard it said a few times that players would struggle to hit through simona in those conditions but Swiatek managed it easily today. Just hope she can follow up on it.

I got him at 13/8 just there.

Don't think this forum has ever been as quiet for a grand slam.

Anyway, that was a shocking loss from Halep, don't think anyone saw it coming. Really hope a seed actually wins and it doesn't go to some randomer. Svitolina will never have a better chance. Currently in control against Garcia, and only Krejčíková/Podoroska and Swiatek/Trevisan would stand in her way before getting to the final, it doesn't get more favourable than that.

Would love Kvitova to win it all, but she's hardly reliable. She could win the title without dropping another set or she could just as easily lose meekly to Zhang, no way of knowing.

Great to see Sinner breaking through at just 19, on the brink of defeating Zverev here. I expect Nadal will be too much in the QF's, but you never know.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,309 Mod ✭✭✭✭mzungu

Halep simply wasn't allowed to show up today. Completely outclassed in all areas.

Rain delay at the moment. So glad they have the roof at RG now.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,309 Mod ✭✭✭✭mzungu

The roof coming on is manna from heaven for Thiem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Halep was 1/8 to beat Swiatek and now Swiatek is the actual favourite to lift the title! She'd go close if maintaining that kind of quality but it's no given now there will be more focus and pressure on her.

The one I'd love to see go really deep is Jabeur, such a gritty and clever player. Sabalenka tried to muscle her off the court yesterday but she was too controlled and smart for her. Should not be underestimated, i think.

A lot of seeds gone in the Women's draw

That lowly ranked French one Trevisan is a bit of a local romantic story to make it to 1/4's

Looks like it's heading for a Nadal Djokovic final

Thiem battling in the fifth set against world number 239 Gaston

Gaston is not a bad little player (literally) but too small at 5 feet 8 to be a big force I world say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,695 ✭✭✭Chivito550

For the sake of the tournament its good Thiem won. Otherwise Nadal will just cruise to the final. I hoped Zverev would get the chance to play Nadal in the quarters but Sacha is too inconsistent in slams. Not a surprise he didn't get that far.

Trevisan is Italian, not French. Having already played qualies I can't see her going too much further, but you never know.

Surprised Gaston managed to take it to 5, went for a run after Thiem saved the two set points in the 3rd, thought it would only go one way after that. Hope we see more of him anyway.

I reckon Sinner-Nadal will actually be more competitive anyway, the mental damage is probably already done to Zverev against Nadal. Plus that passive sh*te that he tends to do mostly nowadays wouldn't do much damage against Nadal.

Well must have been a blue hue to the green on the flag wherever I saw her listed!

This is WTA - anything can happen- both unseeded but the Pole is probably playing better.

At least Trevisan beat Coco Gauff earlier to spare us from more reams of shyte from the commentators so praise be.

Gaston could have taken that match actually - couple of bad drop shot attempts cost him two games in a row at the crucial point of the 5th.

Kenin came through that very well after some stern early resistance. Been just quietly picking her way through the draw with little fuss.

Same as Kvitova really, quietly making her way through the draw. I really want Kvitova to win it all now, but that's usually the kiss of death. Kvitova or Svitolina really, I don't mind.

Would be pretty crazy if Kenin did it though, imagine her walking away from the dumpster fire that's been 2020 with two of the three slams that were played.

Kvitova has had it a lot easier than kenin though, i meant more in the sense that nobody is really talking about her, she's still only fourth favourite in the books. That's probably fair enough really but just feel it makes her a little dangerous.

I know where you're coming from with kvitova or svitolina but personally i don't really mind who wins, as long as they play the best tennis getting there. Gun to head, i'd bet on svitolina blowing it again, but it would definitely be nice to see her fulfill that obvious potential. It's a weak line up for obvious reasons so "now or never" does seem apt in the circumstances.

Never seen Podoroska before, certainly belying her lowly ranking here. Another big shock on the cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Podoroska played well but another disappointment for svitolina, just never showed up. Think Swiatek would beat either to be honest.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,533 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

And there was me thinking surely there's no way Svitolina could throw this draw away...

At that stage genuinely believe if only Svitolina entered a slam she'd still find a way to lose. I and my wallet still remember her collapse v Halep a few years ago.

Tough match with Diego and Thiem who could be 2-0 down but has levelled it up a set each. Thiem should win, but this and his Gaston encounter not ideal if Rafa next.

nothing is sure in the WTA.

is this the flakiest ever top 10? - I think that it could be

Schwartzman proving that the "The big short" is worth a watch.

Thiem is certainly not looking that convincing.

He's partial to the odd 99 ice-cream for sure.

Women's game is in flux, no doubt about that. But i dont know about flakiest ever, too soon to be judging the likes of barty and osaka imo and i really do like andreescu if she can get injuries sorted. The mid 20s bunch, likes of svitolina, mertens etc are proving a bit of a let down alright. Personally, i do quite enjoy the variety though i appreciate that will be seen by many as a lack of goat or whatever quality.

Whoever wins this will have nothing left for (presumably) Nadal. Looks like we're heading for a shock Djokovic-Nadal final  Although I am interested to see if Sinner can mount a challenge later tonight.

Thiem (or anyone else for that matter in the last 30 years) must have never played two shorter lads in a row in a Grand Slam

1.73m last match down to 1.7m here

A big day for the little guy.

Two very tenacious competitors then with Nadal vs Schwartzman in the semi

    Sinner hasn't lost yet!:P

Diego killed Rafa a few weeks ago and was dominant against him a few years ago before he collapsed so he can hang with him, but obviously after that match beating the ATG on this surface in 5 sets,,,huge ask.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,108 ✭✭✭BQQ

Thiem didn’t put up much of a fight after being broken in that last set
Disappointing from probably the best of the younger generation
Almost like he’s happy enough with the us open win

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,695 ✭✭✭Chivito550

6-2 7-5 was a convincing win in Rome. Am I crazy to think Diego has a legit shot at taking Nadal?

  • Registered Users Posts: 695 ✭✭✭lostcat

Good match for the most of it, happy for Schwartzman who seems like a good guy, but really if Thiem is going to win multiple slams he needs to find a way to solve matches like this (and his last match, which shouldnt have gone to 5 sets, which would have left him fresher for today, etc)Maybe it was too much to expect him to win two slams in a row, with the US Open being his first..

Nadals side of the draw is clearing out nicely...
