What other groups of experts get to make recommendations to the government on the levels besides nphet? Hope its not a bunch of teachers deciding the fate of the country!

What we need now are very clear targets from the government.

Level 3 - This where we are. If we don't get cases / growth below X in 2/3 weeks then we will be forced to move to Level 4.

Then we can use the daily numbers ourselves to judge our trajectory.

Whether this is the right or wrong decision is irrelevant,....there is no way this should be getting leaked to the press BEFORE a Cabinet meeting to decide it!
Most of the Cabinet were at the CMO meeting! The general reaction of politicians has been no to Level 5 anyway.

common sense prevails. the enforcement is key here. we need fines for people attending house parties.

This will be seen as a serious error of judgement by the govt. It will be a lightning rod on their backs as spread and hospitalisations accelerate.

They are simply prolonging the pain.

Get the donkey work done now rather than be forced in to a corner by the end of the month.

They will end up on the reactive side rather than proactive.

There needs to be an impact full message for the public in relation to those acting reckless if this is the route - get it together fast or take the consequences of a surge in hospitalisations and a full lock down.

It's down to personal responsibility at the end of the day how this plays out.

The Government are reportedly going to reject NPHET's Level 5 proposal and keep the entire country at Level 3, with stricter enforcement.

They had to be seen to be doing something but were definitely reluctant to go to level 5

    NPHET won't be happy
NPHET just advise, their feelings are unimportant. The CMO has more than once acknowledged they are just one voice.

This hasn’t made Tony look good on his first day back. His own fault

Imposition of heavier restrictions is inevitable. NPHET have given themselves the cover they need to lay the blame solely at the feet of the cabinet in the weeks ahead as the situation deteriorates.

Let the briefing commence, it's going to be fierce.

NPHET now have somebody to blame if the numbers don't stabilise, and the gov can no longer place the blame on NPHET.

What we need is a Level 3 and enforcement . Its the lack of enforcement that has people so frustrated

Sounds like they're going to cave. Or at they very least move the whole country up a level

"Cave", seriously, you think taking recommended restrictions from a state agency is caving?

So two weeks after opening the pubs they decide to close them again, that's the only change, how will that stop the spread?

It WILL lay solely at the feet of cabinet.

Nationwide level 3 appropriate given the effect it’s having on Dublin’s growth rate.

They suspect goods coming in and out of NZ caused the virus to get back in.

I think everyone would agree about coming willy nilly but to effectively get to zero covid you'd have to stop people coming in and out full stop. Are you advocating that?

It's the only sensible plan, yes I advocate for it.

The way I see it there are three ways to go about it.

    1. Allow the current "plan" to continue and hope for a vaccine.
Billions of euros down the tube, 7 months of goodwill wasted, the economy on its knees ...and it has achieved nothing. Back to square one.

    2. Pretend it doesn't exist and "live with the virus"
Ludicrous. The virus isn't going to disappear if it's let run rampant, the logic is insane. Kiss the entire hospital system goodbye and the economy is ruined and people sick left right and center.

    3. Isolate the country and eradicate the disease.
Very difficult but it has an exit strategy. A return to normal with a reduced economy.

Only one of these strategies has light at the end of the tunnel.

None tonight according to Zara King - scheduling issues. Duck and cover is my own take on it.

They're just kicking the can down the road. Risk bringing level 5 around Christmas now. If people are resistant to level 5 can only imagine reaction if that happens. https://twitter.com/RTENewsPaulC/status/1313132103639478272?s=19

To be honest, the cabinet have been hiding behind NPHET for months now when imposing measures. That ends today, they're on their own in a sense - following their own advice.

I mean behind the scenes briefings, NPHET will let it be known to every journalist the huge risks that the Government are about to take.

People will be furious when we are in level 5 restrictions in the run up to and during Christmas. NPHET will be out saying it was avoidable.

Do you think Tony Holohan is trying to make friends? He and the NPHET are charged with making recommendations based on the prevailing data and best practice. No one in the world in his position comes out of this 'looking good' but he is, quite thankfully, willing to lead like the house is on fire and not waste time pussy footing.

They are not a state agency. It exists at the pleasure of the MoH and he can dissolve it.

It's all going to end in tears (and a fcucked up hospital network).

I'm curious what additional enforcement is going to be. If it's Micheal asking people to 'pretty please' obey the restrictions then we are screwed.

There surely has to be some sort of fine/penalty for non-adherence brought in now? At least for the more 'extreme' or obvious breeches?

This prolonging of restrictions is what's killing people's hope. Like a cat playing with an injured mouse. Just do it and get it over with, not another bloody few months of this partial restriction BS
