why when news outlets report on people in their 30s getting Covid and getting very ill with it, do they ignore the fact that the person was clinically obese and let them make statements like, i had no underlying illnesses.

Why would an athlete in their 30s who got very ill with it say they're clinically obese?

Seems like seriously unethical journalism for RTE to lead with an article title of that nature . Pretty disgraceful I must say, some people are really scared of this virus, the ones who have no regard for public health or restrictions are never going to have their minds changed by a media article, so I don't think any further terrorising of the population at large is necessary

A much more balanced approach would be a title like 'Young woman's story urges others to heed caution and avoid infection ,COVID complications although rare do occur in the young aswell'. Still gets point across the same without what is unequivocally scare mongering

So you're advocating hiding the reality of it for some people from others? Who are you to speak for all people and say they're scared?

We haven't been doing too much cancer screening this year.

Lets hope we don't have another cancer scandal on Dr Tony's watch.

We can all read the article. It doesn't mean the country is going into level 5 so no need for the hyperbole.

Dr Glynn spotted earlier on hearing the news

Glad to see Tony back. I would normally say it's good for a person to have some work, to 'distract' from such a horrible circumstance at home and provide a steady anchor but with the nature of this work, he's going to be one of the most stressed men in the country. I hope he's minding his ticker too.

It'll be a relief not to hear the 'acting' CMO part announced on the news, sometimes announced with emphasis on 'acting', as if Dr. Glynn doesn't have the credentials to run the job full-time.

I think they're getting too much flak on social media, they're just doing their job and it's up to the politicians to make the decisions at the end of the day. They're recommending restrictions, the same as climate scientists recommend we all switch the green energy, government are the ones to blame if you're not happy with how those recommendations are interpreted and applied.

    Are facemasks actually helping?

If they are worn correctly they are. A hell of a lot of people don't though. I have to get public transport to work, and a lot of people refuse to wear their masks correctly. Yesterday evening, all but one of the upper desk seats was singly occupied as I got on (which is in accordance with the rules). But only two people besides me were wearing their masks, the rest had it pulled beneath the nose, rendering it useless. The guy in front of me actually sneezed three times, and still didn't pull his mask up. I'd say if he actually had covid he could have given it to half the bus just by that action alone. It's really annoying, since it's such a simple thing to do, even if it is not the most comfortable thing.

Well, when you have people ignoring the levels someone needs to get tough on them.
I see someone that tested positive going around as normal.
They should do their 14 day isolation in a cage if they can't have a bit of cop on.

Tony coming back to soften everyone up for more lockdowns.

Yeap, the Lockdown Hawk is back, expect Ireland to go into Full Level 5 lockdown by end of month and all through Christmas, New Year's and Patrick's day..

Hope the Government can go back to the market or the EU and borrow another €10 billion to pay for the upcoming 10's of thousands of people who will be laid off before Christmas and witness the complete decimation of Aviation/tourism/hospitality/arts and retail... We may all be as poor as we were back in the 1980's but at least we'll be Covid free...though who will pay for the Health service, the Civil service when there's no money being spent in the economy.

Israel has spiraled completely out of control - nearly 9,000 cases yesterday. They have a population just about double what we have:

    https://www.timesofisrael.com/nearly-9000-new-virus-cases-recorded-wednesday-as-infections-hit-new-high/

"Health Ministry says 810 people in serious condition, with 206 on ventilators, amid worries over hospitals being unable to cope with influx of patients"

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told officials on Wednesday to prepare a plan for 5,000 seriously ill patients by next week, according to Channel 13 news."

"“Out of 111 internal [medicine] departments at hospitals, already more than 40% have been turned into coronavirus wards,” Avishai Ellis, head of the Internal Medicine Association, was quoted saying by Channel 12 news."

Strange, I was convinced we'd be moved to level 3. They must be confident things are under control? Dublin had very high community transmission which contributed to the move to 3.

What do people think will be done differently under Tony? Is it just people will respect him more?
NPHET will still largely be made up by the same body and likely the same advice generated. I assume Tony was always listening to them all and not just going with his own opinion.

I think NPHET have completely lost the public since Tony left, to be honest.

Cos he calls the shots within NPHATE, what he told Harris was what happened before FF joined the party....

Teflon Tony has survived as head of the HSE for so long he's untouchable, so isn't afraid to call the shots with Government, he's a lockdown Hawk so will push for more stringent restrictions than Glynn would have recommended or been able to push through. And Teflon is certainly well able to scare the public too...

Israel is strange because they have less deaths than us out of 250,000 cases. They really must be on top of testing.

They have suffered from appalling Trumpesque leadership from Netanyahu. These right wing jokers have really been found out by this virus.

640 cases in Scotland. 7 deaths unfortunately.

232 new cases in Glasgow and Clyde

    668 new cases. 3 deaths.

244 are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
Sturgeon: “The good news is that the early indications suggest that the restrictions in place in Glasgow City, East and West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire might be helping to slow down the increase in new cases.

“So that at this stage is positive but the number of new cases in these parts of Greater Glasgow and Clyde still remains high and is still increasing albeit we think at a slower rate than would have been the case without these restrictions being in place.”

Glasgow has now been under local restrictions for a month today. The restrictions are a bit of a mix between our level 3 and 4. Pubs open, but no visits to other households at all.

I can't find a precise number but I believe they had about 65 cases in Glasgow and Clyde region the day they imposed restrictions.
Hard to garner too much from their experience, other than to say that the level 4 household restrictions, economically cheap but socially painful, are no panacea.

They're now seriously considering a "circuit-breaker" on a national level.
    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-54368306

It's all a bit dispiriting. Perhaps a glimpse at our near future.

Pure optics. He left when the first part of the heavy lifting was done and the virus was suppressed.

People will associate him with that time.

The narrative that people will him respect more and behave more appropriately is absolute nonsense.

The vast majority are doing their best, it's every day life which is the main driver of increase now.

So what’s the situation with the bars in Dublin? there in a lose lose, if cases keep going up they won’t be opened, if cases go markedly down they’ll be used as example to say why the measures worked!

They really have been destroyed by this government

He is Chief Medical Officer, not head of HSE.
