    1% of unemployment = 0.6 - 1.3% suicide rate.

He's still winding ye in folks. His posting history should be enough to dissuade anyone from engaging with him. The most extreme and contarian opinion to generate a response. Not worthy of a reply. I unfortunately engaged before I realised who I was dealing with.

We've all fallen into that trap, any person that thinks it's ok to drink and drive as long as you're under the legal limit should be ignored as their opinion is based on nonsense and not reality as their previous posts are evidence of this.

Can't remember, found it at the beginning when I was researching the "pandemic". US is 1.1% from what I remember precisely. Ireland possibly less. Look at the charts though from 2002 onward and you will see the rise in 2008-2011.

Hallelujah, finally some sense. Should have been done from the beginning. And for those of you saying it’s the wrong time of the year, the beginning could have been anytime like last November.

Could well of been here last November, takes Time to spread though for varying reasons. Anyway we shall see, there is an upside though, over the next few months we will know, if its a car crash for all age groups, we know what we have to do, if it isn't , happy days, the world can emerge from the shadows. Fingers crossed as i think we(europe) are at the point of no return anyway. 1 death is too many but indeed the knock on result i.e deaths from other illnesses and mental health is a big reality too. Stay well all

'Leo Varadkar to restrict movements after negative Covid test' is the kind of headline Waterford Whisperers would come up with.

What a stupid place this country has become. Pandering to the hysteria merchants

Irish soldiers took part in the Military games last October in Wuhan. French soldiers returned to France some complaining of respiratory illness. Not saying it was Covid, strange coincidence though.

Some people also compared covid with mysterious vape illness in usa which was detected there last year.

Several soldiers pulled out of the games once in Wuhan citing the flu. Two patients in a French hospital were tested for flu in Dec 2019, both of whom were in Hospital since early Dec. The tests came back as negative at the time. However, the swabs were retested on March or April and tested positive for Covid. So we know it was confirmed to have been in France since early Dec. I'll have to double check, but I believe I read that we had a spike of pneumonia related deaths around xmas also.

Some people just can't wrap their minds around the fact that poverty kills people. They are wrapped in their own little bubble and can't work through the implications.

The penny will drop eventually... even if someone isn't personally impacted by this financially or mentally at the moment, it wont take long until someone they are close to is.

I still cant get my head around the government cutting the PUP from 350 to 300... the week they order pubs and restaurants in Dublin to close.

I've a couple of friends looking for work at the moment ... it's not pretty out there. Reminds me of 2010. Fixed term contracts, "full time" positions but only 16 hours guaranteed etc.

I'm doing ok through this financially (so far), but I can see the damage this is doing.

Visited Tralee yesterday, wanted to buy lunch and use bathroom. Went to two fast foods and the bathrooms were closed. I've been told because of covid. Wow, just wow... so am I supposed to sh*t around the corner on the street somewhere or what?? Drove to Castleisland and luckily the toilets at a petrol station were available. Unreal. Everyone AVOID Tralee!

So I'm back from holidays for a while now... this place is insane! Queues outside shops still for some reason... Why? People being herded in to Tesco etc. Fk that I'm walking in nobody will stop me. It's time to move on!

Saunas/steam rooms still closed in gyms across Cork. Interesting that I could use the shower at a camping site in Kerry, but I can't use a shower at a local gym? What's the difference??

Ordered something from Ikea, it takes two weeks to deliver! Hire more people so! What the hell?

This country is so behind still... it's time to open it up, not close it down damnit! How long will this stupidity last?

The amount of covid articles is insane in the media, what the hell is their problem? Experts this and that, this might be happening and that might be happening... Fk off with this garbage.

Very interesting indeed, i didn't know this, obviously soldiers would be fit although i have seen a few plump ones in my time, so if true, it does look like the vulnerable will probably be the main risk over the coming months, we still need to protect them though - obviously but indeed the economy could get back on track per se although i do fear for the double infection myself. As said before, we had it, mild symptoms, it was quite nasty although we weren't panicked either - no choice!

    https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/let-virus-spread-among-under-60s-dail-committee-told-1018721.html

An adviser to the World Health Organisation has said Ireland should allow Covid-19 to spread in a "controlled" way among people under 60.

Johan Giesecke, Sweden's former chief epidemiologist and a member of the WHO's strategic and technical advisory group for infectious hazards, made the comments at the Oireachtas coronavirus committee on Wednesday morning.

Several medical experts are appearing before the committee, which is examining options for eliminating community transmission of Covid-19.

Mr Giesecke said the Government should allow a controlled spread of the virus among people under 60 and concentrate on protecting the old and frail, with frequent tests of staff and residents in care homes.
Mr Giesecke also said the Government should not build its Covid strategy around a possible vaccine.

He said there could be a long wait for immunisation and it may not be effective for those who need it most.
He also urged the Government to be wary of authoritarian, un-democratic decisions by authorities during the pandemic.

    this bit struck me.

Fcuk you Leo and your vaccine.

I've had a couple of friends lose their professional jobs in construction and finance and a part-time job lost from the friend who is studying. I have had friends in hospitals unimpacted, in fact, enjoying the last few months as it has been quiet. I have other friends in good law jobs who have had their bonuses cut and salaries frozen (the only reason to do the long hours in a big law firm IMO) - however, due to the lockdown and having no kids, the savings are in better order.

Just had a haircut and went for a coffee afterwards. The barbers was really quiet, operating at very limited capacity. There was a queue outside the cafe but in reality there were only about 5 of us waiting to get a coffee.

Both are lovely businesses and are probably doing better than any of their competitors.

    Really sad to see.

It isn't human lives, it isn't the economy, it's both. I feel for those affected from both sides.

You are contradicting yourself here and quite a lot. You are constantly virtue-signalling about how all you do is about protecting vulnerable yet when vulnerable are forced to go about their daily routine job-shop-home even at the height of "lockdown" you call them selfish idiots.
Not everyone can work from home and vulnerable people like me for example simply can't live in your fantasy land where everyone is locked away so you can feel better. Not to mention tens of thousands who lost their jobs already. They are even more vulnerable by default right now.

As other poster suggested this is exactly "I am allright Jack" attitude and majority of people have enough of it.

I’m obviously not calling people going about their business like work, shopping etc idiots, what on earth gave you that idea. It’s people going to house parties, meeting in large groups, going in big groups to pubs or restaurants etc that I was referring to. Basically people who are needlessly having contact with large numbers of people. This coupled with schools being open (which should not have happened) are driving the virus on in the community.

I am not “locked away” I go to the shop, we go out for walks or outdoor places where it’s easy to social distance, I am going into work quite often in the last weeks to catch up on some hands on work I had put to one side during covid but I am basically alone in my part of the building so very easy to distance and not have contact with others.

I am not however going to pubs or restaurants (haven’t eaten sit in food or drank outside of home since March just getting off-licence for drink and a takeaway once a week), I’m not meeting in big groups in houses only small numbers of family contacts and other family homes, we didn’t stay in hotels or go away places etc. This is what I mean by stay at home, stay at home unless it’s essential things or something outdoors where you distance.

What he is proposing is almost impossible though. I cannot see how you can let a highly contagious virus circulate in one part of the community and keep it out of another. This is particularly the case for older people who depend on younger people to provide their care.

Controlled? Do you volunteer people to be exposed? You'll put your hand up I'm sure.

That's why this hasn't been adopted.

So there is no correlation between death rate and restrictions? Interesting.

From the data it appears the death rate is linked to the population over 65 in a country.

We allow it to happen every influenza season, why is this different?

Now Im not suggeting for one minute Covid is similar to influenza.

Influenza has a vaccine and is dangerous to kids and all ages

The possibility of NOT finding a vaccine does not really seem to get discussed in Irish media.

For the other viruses in the coronavirus family, which ones have vaccines and how long did it take to develop them?

This is different because it is so infectious that if everyone gets it at the same time that it will overwhelm the health system.

7 months in and we are still explaining this basic stuff...

Went around Galway there yesterday and it was as dead as a doornail. I really don't know how so many businesses are going to be able to survive the winter. I don't think it has hit people yet the economic devastation on the way next year. A lot of people are still in their own bubble.

I'm fortunate enough to work for a big multinational but some of the local businesses are going to be decimated.

Strolling through Cork City in 2009-2010 and seeing all the shops closed was extremely depressing, and I was an apathetic teenager then. I'm more conscious of things now and this upcoming recession scares the hell out of me.
