Pubs, bars and restaurants in England will have to shut by 10pm from Thursday under new nationwide restrictions to halt an “exponential” rise in coronavirus cases.

Police have also been handed powers to issue £1,000 fines and make arrests to enforce 2 metre social distancing in pubs and restaurants, the Guardian has learned. Boris Johnson is expected to make an address to the nation on Tuesday setting out the new measures.

Testing people is not just about finding Covid.

It is eliminating the possibility that people with symptoms have the virus so that they can go back to their normal routine.

The people of Ireland have stopped listening to the government and NPHET. I truly believe that the Clifden dinner had a major influence on that. I dont think I have ever seen the population so angry as it was after that event and Hogans mystery your. I am not sure how the government can get back hearts and minds.

Without solid death figures of 40-50 people a day the virus has been demoted from any level of importance for a lot of people.

There's vacancies nationwide never mind a reserve.

Science degrees are not the same as an accredited, registered qualification. The same as science degrees cant be used for other HSCP professions.

And no one would want to work for less pay, poorer conditions and unsocable hours in the current state.

It would be interesting for RTE to bring on an actual working doctor in one of the busiest COVID hospitals like Beaumont or the Mater to give an actual opinion on the way things are right now. We don't seem to be seeing news reports of armageddon ICUs from Spain/France, for example.

there was a bit there on the Claire Byrne show where the experts are hammering home the message of indoor, household gatherings being high risk for covid infection. Also one of them saying we are heading towards another lockdown by Christmas time or the new year of we don't act now.

Basically we all have a part to play to follow the guidelines that are laid out.

This is the message that many in the medical and science fields are hammering out. Why doesn't the government step in and make this happen? I heard on the news over the weekend that in England, people are faced with up to 10,000 pounds fine of they are caught breaking isolation rules. That's proper order imo. We really need our government to bring in large fines for people who are going to break the guidelines on masks and social distancing and isolation guidelines.

There was a blond guest on the show by video call. Her name was Niamh. The tone she was speaking in displays she's very playe that her young generation is locked up. It's overly dramatic for crying out loud. You're talking about restricting your close contacts and social gatherings for the foreseeable future to hammer down on the virus. <snip>
